Daydream (110,982)
by Stacey from USA

|
|
I love Open Arms, both MC's cover and the original by Journey. I agree it's one of Mariah's best covers. The album is sequenced perfectly as it stands. Fantasy is a perfect lead off song for the album. Then UTS begins to slow it down heading into two ballad, OSD and Open Arms. A little bump up in tempo finds ABMB with continues the chill R&B sound again setting the stage again for the next two beautiful ballads, IAF and WISY. Long Ago follows the pattern of UTS and ABMB and bumps up the beat leading into Daydream Interlude. Kinda brings the album full circle starting with Fantasy and ending with DI. Now, I know Looking In is the last song. I see it as a P.S song. At that point, I think MC was done with her marriage to Tommy. She waited until the album had run its course before moving on. The album is perfect as it stands, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. If that makes me full of it, then I'm guilty as charged.

But "Long ago" sounds more urban than "Slipping away". Anyway I think "Daydream" is pure perfection as it is. But it's interesting that "Open arms" seems to be a less favourite here. For me it's one of her best covers. It's on the top 5 for sure.

That's why I like the interview, she was uncomfortable on that chair, sitting so low, her inner diva would've pulled a RuPaul and sasheyed away, but instead, she adapted and look real. The diva was gone, the woman, the artist was there. That's the Mariah I miss.

Another thing I remembered of her being very humble in this interview is that when she came in she pulled her own chair, didn't make a fuss about lighting and angles and just was very chill. No makeup artist or hairstylist running in and out fixing her hair.

It is going to be really fabulous tomorrow evening for MC to receive the Vanguard Award, and see her perform live on the CBS. It has been reported on X that MC has been rehearsing with her band and her singers for the past two days. I feel that there may be two special guests as part of her award presentation and performance. Tomorrow is going to be huge for MC because Here For It All will be mentioned, heard, and seen throughout the 3 hour awards show.

I agree, the intro to One Night is as good as any of her other iconic intros, but then it just sounds like one big mess beyond that point with really immature lyrics etc. It would have really thrown the album off kilter. I would have maybe kept the intro only as an interlude to "Side 2", but the rest of the song can go spin for all I care. Daydream really is a masterstroke from beginning to end.

VMAs / Grammys (110,978)
by Giovanni from USA

This might actually be a good show this year going by all the rumored performances that will be taking place. So many artists are going to be there. Mariah was long overdo for the Vanguard award but y'all think the VMAS finally decided to honor her or did Gamma/L.A. Reid make it happen. Reason I ask is because if L.A. Reid pulled some strings do you think he could do the same with the Grammys? I do think Mariah can at least be nominated again if she releases something worthy.

"I had never witnessed anything like that I'm just being my normal self going to Burger King wild'n out, jumping on all the cars, smoking weed, drinking, having a good time, just talking shit." What Da Brat calls fun, sounds more "anti-social" than fun. Or like a kindergarten. I mean do you jump on cars at the age of 26? For me it's not normal. I just imagine Daydream Mariah with Da Brat at McDonald's. Lol.

I agree with everything on your post. If I'm not mistaken Tommy is also the reason "Can't let go" did not go to number one. I definitely think both "Slipping away" and "One night" could have made the album. "Daydream" is a great album and Mariah deserved at least one Grammy.

I can see that. Honestly, I'm not a fan of Open Arms, the original, either. Or anyone else who did it. Mariah simply did it the best. In a way, she kind of ruined other artists for me. She gives so much on each song that I simply will not accept that little from anyone.
And yes, One Night and Slipping Away are some of her best works, definitely deserving to be on the album. Anyone who says it doesn't fit the "theme" is full of it because Daydream doesn't have a real cohesive theme to begin with. The songs are all over the place in terms of instrumentation, emotional tone and lyrical content. They're all so random:
• Fantasy: Romantic escapism • UTS: Nostalgic young love • OSD: Loss and mourning • Open Arms: Longing for reconciliation • ABMB: Lasting emotional connection • I Am Free: Spiritual liberation • When I Saw You: Love at first sight • Long Ago: Painful memories • Melt Away: Sensual romance • Forever: Enduring separation
One Night could easily jive with Underneath The Stars because Mariah would be consistent. You should aspire for a UTS kind of love and not give away your goods. They're cut from the same cloth, just different shades. Slipping Away, a pre-break up emotional detachment song, could easily jive with ABMB, the post-break up song. They're part one and part two of the same story.
They simply weren't included because they sounded too Urban R&B and Tommy didn't want her that direction. But nobody could stop Mariah anyway and she kind of already hit an R&B stride with ABMB. The sound was already shifting. Leaving them off wasn't about cohesion but limiting Mariah. They should've just included them because they would've made the album even stronger.

Haha I'm glad you found my post "interesting". I didn't mean to knock Mariah's cover of "Open arms" because she definitely did a great job. I just don't like the song. However I actually do like "One night" even though so many think it's horrible. Mariah really gives some great singing on the song and I love the intro. I can hear Christina Aguilera singing this song for first album but I don't know if I would scrap any songs on "Daydream" for it. "Slipping away" is much better and has a great beat. My favorite tracks from Daydream are "Underneath the stars", "One sweet day", "Melt away" and "Forever".

While One Night delivers amazing vocals, the song feels like two unfinished songs smashed together. It just doesn't work, IMHO. I'm glad it wasn't included on Daydream. Same with Slipping Away. I absolutely love SA, but again SA doesn't fit with the whole vibe of Daydream. Each song flows into the next. It is pouring rain right now. Perfect time to play some Daydream.

I think the fact that it was so chaotic made Mariah be more engaged haha. Because she had no idea what's coming next and so she was paying attention. In normal sit downs she gets bored. Also I'm not familiar with the streaming world but I think they keep looking at the screen because they are constantly getting alerts, donations, prompts, questions in the chat etc so they're managing the stream and keeping their audience engaged in real time also ensuring the technical side of things are running smooth. So that's why it's so chaotic. I think he was very respectful of Mariah and so were the other guys in the back. She looked like she felt appreciated. Of course they don't know her catalogue as well as we do so they'd appear a little out of touch. But yes I think she's teaming up with these streamers to widen her younger audience which is smart. This paid off more than Mr Beast.

I heard Ariana Grande will be attending the VMAs and was thinking she should be the one to present Mariah with the award. I heard it was going to be LL but it was just a rumor. It definitely should be Ariana and it would be appropriate. I'm so glad Mariah acknowledged her and worked with her. You don't shade someone who looks up to you and calls you the greatest vocalist. Not to mention someone who covered one of your songs. I like Ariana and some of her songs. I've been playing "The Way" non stop and it's probably my favorite from her.

Interesting take. I would let Open Arms stay. It's simply well done. Mariah tastefully made it hers without veering off too far away from the original melody. Long Ago and Daydream Interlude can go though and I'd swap them with One Night and Slipping Away. They would've gone well with all the mid-tempos. Slipping Away is truly that song that was unjustly scrapped. One Night has the most beautiful intro. She exuded Stevie Wonder's influence on this record. It's just straight up fire. A perfect ode to your baby sisters and nieces. I also feel like she had Alison in mind when she wrote it. She honestly kind of over recorded in Daydream and truly mastered the art of album making, because even the scrapped tracks are phenomenal. When the hell do "throwaways" sound this freaking great? Daydream Mariah was simply a cut above everyone. She is God's favorite.

I agree and I loved the outfit so much. I'm so glad she hasn't gotten any plastic surgery like Madonna or other celebrities because I believe in aging naturally. Dear Bill, as I told Randy, I guess we're getting old. The beauty of the interview was in its messiness. Kai wasn't being disrespectful, he was being himself, messy, but authentic. I was like: can you stop with what's on the screen and focus on Ms. Carey? They were just being typical gen z's. He has 1.3M subscribers more than Mariah. The mission was accomplished.

"Open Arms" is indeed stunning and breath taking in its simplicity and understated beauty. I love the way she made it sound so "Mariah", in that it went from this 80s rock power ballad anthem to a gorgeous moving restrained ballad.
"Slipping Away" is an amazing song, I don't think any will disagree, but I always loved its underground status it had. I agree I'm not sure it would have fitted in with the other tracks on Daydream. As for "One Night", a hard no and a hard pass from me. I was a bit shocked that was a Daydream outtake as it seemed more "E=MC2" to me. Adding it to the album would have detracted from its sophistication in my view.

"Forever" live from Madison SG was my obsession when I was a teen and still is today. I really love the fluidity of that song and how she sang is so effortlessly.

When I saw you (110,958)

I had the exact feelings during Daydream. "I wondered what it must feel like to be her. Like, to be that beautiful and be able to sing like that." I coulnd't believe how a woman can look so good and sing with a voice like that. It was unbelievable, the talent, the look, her eyes, her smile, her classy clothes, the lyrics, the melodies of the songs. Daydream had something magical. I've never seen a singer like Mariah before. She had everything, it was almost surreal. Of course she's still wonderful, but during Daydream there came "everything" together. Really almost too perfect. And I loved her little shyness back then, it was so sweet.

I just played it and it took me through a time warp to when I was a tween. When I first got Daydream, I mostly listened to it on my Walkman. I used to lay in bed for hours listening to it while reading the lyrics trying to learn them. Or staring at her face because she was the most beautiful girl to me. I wondered what it must feel like to be her. Like, to be that beautiful and be able to sing like that.
