Daydream (110,957)
by Lambi from USA

Interesting take. I would let Open Arms stay. It's simply well done. Mariah tastefully made it hers without veering off too far away from the original melody. Long Ago and Daydream Interlude can go though and I'd swap them with One Night and Slipping Away. They would've gone well with all the mid-tempos. Slipping Away is truly that song that was unjustly scrapped. One Night has the most beautiful intro. She exuded Stevie Wonder's influence on this record. It's just straight up fire. A perfect ode to your baby sisters and nieces. I also feel like she had Alison in mind when she wrote it. She honestly kind of over recorded in Daydream and truly mastered the art of album making, because even the scrapped tracks are phenomenal. When the hell do "throwaways" sound this freaking great? Daydream Mariah was simply a cut above everyone. She is God's favorite.

Is definitely one of her best and what would have made it better is if "Slipping away" had made the album. I would have swapped out "Open arms" for "Slipping away" and I know Tommy was the reason why it didn't make the album. I love Journey but "Open arms" is the one song I don't care for. I also believe Daydream Mariah would have covered "At your best (you are love)" perfectly. "Fantasy" is one of her biggest hits but one I never play, I prefer playing "One sweet day" and "Always be my baby". I prefer Butterfly Mariah because of her raspy tone, also the "Butterfly" album cover is her best album cover in my opinion. I also loved what would have been "The art of letting go" album cover but Mariah changed it which was disappointing because it's a very nice album cover. I'm happy with the "Here for it all" album cover. She looks happy and like the legend she is. Mariah has such a nice smile.

Mariah and her beautiful ballads make me want to fall in love. I wonder will "My Love" be just as beautiful Open Arms. It just might be the MC's interpretation that turns it into a R&B power ballad.

Daydream (110,955)
by Bill from the UK

"Open Arms" is indeed stunning and breath taking in its simplicity and understated beauty. I love the way she made it sound so "Mariah", in that it went from this 80s rock power ballad anthem to a gorgeous moving restrained ballad.
"Slipping Away" is an amazing song, I don't think any will disagree, but I always loved its underground status it had. I agree I'm not sure it would have fitted in with the other tracks on Daydream. As for "One Night", a hard no and a hard pass from me. I was a bit shocked that was a Daydream outtake as it seemed more "E=MC2" to me. Adding it to the album would have detracted from its sophistication in my view.

"Open Arms" is one of Mariah's finest covers. The track that really deserved a spot on "Daydream" is "One Night". While "Slipping Away" is a great song, I don't think it would've blended well sonically with the rest of the album. Suggesting that "Slipping Away" should've replaced "Open Arms" is sacrilegious and a clear violation of the sacred "Daydream" code. Messing with the integrity of a Mariah's masterpiece is an automatic ban on this board. This time is just a slight reprimand, but don't let it happen again.

Dear Bill, as I told Randy, I guess we're getting old. The beauty of the interview was in its messiness. Kai wasn't being disrespectful, he was being himself, messy, but authentic. I was like: can you stop with what's on the screen and focus on Ms. Carey? They were just being typical gen z's. He has 1.3M subscribers more than Mariah. The mission was accomplished.

I couldn't watch it because it was so infuriatingly bad. Mariah looked great and I'm sure she represented herself well, but I'm guess I'm out of touch as the host was incoherent and an absolute unprofessional mess as was the others that materialised. I gave up after the Heartbreaker acapella when not one of them knew the word "incessantly". An absolute car crash and way below the standard Mariah should be at.

Bill, I think the interview was just an opportunity for MC to connect with the younger generation. Think of the whole conversation as MC stripping back her diva persona, being seen as down to earth, and having fun with a group of college guys. She has been viewed as less of a diva during the past three months.

Yup, that is sadly the literacy level of America's youth today. It is solely for clout so Mariah was willing. It is really random though. She actually does pay attention on what is on Roc and Roe's algorithm. But I was thinking, "Okay there has got to be better streamers, right?"

Her voice on Daydream is just like butter. Smooth, nuanced, powerful but never too showy. Daydream is pure perfection. In my humble opinion, "Butterfly" is her magnum opus though. That album could've been titled "Metamorphosis". When I saw Mariah on "Honey", so sexy and beutiful, for a moment I questioned my sexuality.

I just played it and it took me through a time warp to when I was a tween. When I first got Daydream, I mostly listened to it on my Walkman. I used to lay in bed for hours listening to it while reading the lyrics trying to learn them. Or staring at her face because she was the most beautiful girl to me. I wondered what it must feel like to be her. Like, to be that beautiful and be able to sing like that.

When I Saw You has always been one of my favorites from "Daydream". It's incredible that Mariah, at such a young age, crafted lyrics with so much depth, beauty and emotional resonance. To me, she never quite captured that same poetic magic again after "Charmbracelet", with the exception of "Randy's Theme". The songs she wrote later on were still heartfelt, but their structures felt a bit simpler and less poetic by comparison.

Penny Ford - I lose control (110,918)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I Lose Control is amazing and a long time ago an "AI" edit was floating, but it got embargoed to the point that people thought it was actually Mariah's demo, as it included high notes and ad libs not in the Penny version. It sounded incredible and every day I curse myself for not downloading a copy when I had the chance.
It was originally intended as Mariah's launch single, according to rumours. Everyone loved it but Mariah couldn't stand it, saying it was "stupid" and a "cheesy little uptempo ditty that I hated so much". This is why I think she never worked with NMW again, as she also didn't enjoy the "I Don't Wanna Cry" experience either, saying she wouldn't have titled the song that and that it went in a different direction to what she envisaged (more "Careless Whisper" vibe originally).
In the liner notes for the debut album, she thanks her then-manager Don Ienner "for not making me 'lose control'". Apparently he was the only one who had her back around not including the song on the album at all, let alone it being the lead single, and advocated with Mariah for "Vision of Love" instead.
Walden had reached out to Carey saying he still had the master tape for if she wanted to include it on The Rarities, but she never got back to him.
I wonder how differently things would have panned out? A one hit wonder? A no hit wonder? The mind boggles.
