Finally. One of my favorite albums of Mariah Carey gets a remastering and release - in Dolby Atmos. This is so important to me as I always thought the record was long overdue. This album was huge (worldwide) especially "Always be my baby" and "One Sweet Day" and was actually my introduction to Mariah Carey the singer. I am glad it finally gets its moment.

One Sweet Day was only a massive hit in the US. Everywhere else it was just a top ten that came and went like every other song. It meant Open Arms could be released everywhere else whilst OSD was still dragging its heels at Number One in the US.
Jagged Little Pill was massive everywhere, Alanis was a fresh new talent unlike anything else at that time. She deserved to win.

MC didn't hold back with the Daydream 30th Anniversary edition. So much, it is too much for me to type on my phone. Lol. July 17th is the day MC is making up for last year. I am most excited about the writing session demos and the new Underneath the Stars remix by Eric Kupper (Made For Now - Janet Jackson, Hot Stuff - Donna Summer, September - Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Love Hangover - Diana Ross).

Interesting video (114,182)
by Bobby A from United States
| |

The video was very sad to watch. Maybe MC will let us know everything she has been going through on MC17. I just wonder if MC just pushed herself too hard in the 1990s because of her undiagnosed bipolar disorder and the effects of being married to Tommy. I can not imagine having it all and yet still dealing with a lot of pain. I hope MC's Jagged Little Pill is on the way in 2027. It would bring MC so much happiness if MC17 became a major success.

I just have never been a Alanis Morrisette fan. Maybe MC should name MC17 from a line of a first verse from one of the songs on the album to win some Grammys in 2028. Lol. On a serious note, 17x platinum in 2026 is really impressive. I guess that is why you can never find a used copy of the cd or cassette sitting in a bin in a music store.

Daydream 30 (114,171)
by Bobby A from United States

The excitement about Daydream 30 had me thinking today, why was MC so disappointed about her Grammys loses in 1996? MC probably felt that Daydream was her best album of her career at that point. She recorded the greatest pop songs of her career at that time with Fantasy, One Sweet Day, and Always Be My Baby. However, the whole album was overlooked by the Grammys. Why? There are reasons why MC's Daydream and India Aire's Acoustic Soul were both overlooked by the Grammys in 1996 and 2002 that should be discussed. Both are unique female singers who sound and compose like no other female artists.

I hope the album gets a high-res remaster, as it's her only Sony album (not including Unplugged) to have not received that treatment. It should obviously have the Chick album on it with Mariah's vocals, some select remixes, some more unearthed b-sides as I'm sure there's more than what appeared on The Rarities, and to top it all off, the audio of the London leg of the Daydream Tour, for which I was an attendee.

Greatest artist / WH vs MC (114,132)
by Bobby A from United States

It makes me sad too because every TV performance that MC gives keeps me wondering for once why can't she just sing live. MC can't even sing live during her Christmas shows anymore. These lyrics from Lead the Way make me think about what MC's voice use to be able to convey so effortlessly without worrying about her vocal flaws.
I 'd given up hope Losing the faith that love Could be mine to treasure And now, nothing's the same I found myself reborn On the day I met you

Greatest artist / WH vs MC (114,126)
by Lambi from USA
| |
|
|
That's debatable. I'd say Whitney and Mariah birthed most of the vocal pop girlies who came after them, with Mariah having a slight edge simply because she covered more styles. Heck, she even got Aretha to sing Touch My Body.
Lecrae also interviewed Tori Kelly and asked her the same question. Tori picked Mariah, and Lecrae could not handle it. He said, "Someone's going to hate you for that. They're hating on you right now. They're saying you have lost your mind."
Tori doubled down, "That's okay. I love them both but I really was raised more with Mariah Carey. I won a big trophy singing Vision of Love when I was 9 years old, so I'm sticking with Mariah." She was obviously just being authentic.
It's interesting though. I watch these street type interviews, and almost every time a black person is asked, "Mariah or Whitney?" the immediate answer is Whitney which sort of makes me feel like there's a bit of colorism at play because it happens so often.
Their general tone towards Mariah is just kind of like, "She's not even competition to Whitney" which makes me wonder, is her music just not played at cookouts? Why are we acting like she isn't formidable vocally? She arguably did more technically demanding things and has a much broader catalog.
Then when you actually hear from the real black vocal queens like Aretha or Patti, they praise the hell out of Mariah. Aretha famously wanted to sing with MC and MC only during Divas Live, and Patti handpicked Mariah to perform in her tribute despite Whitney being available. She was literally in the same building that night.
I talked to a black friend of mine (who sings) about it, and his take was basically, "Mariah has a reputation as a lip-syncer, a phony," and "The average person will feel stupid picking her if we're talking real singing." I was like, "Okay, fair." I didn't really have a rebuttal because it made perfect sense then it just kind of made me sad realizing how tarnished Mariah's credibility really has become.

The greatest female artist of all time snub (114,109)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
Why doesn't the music industry recognize MC more as the greatest female artist of all time? We all know that she has definitely earned the title. I think the music industry doesn't want to recognize her as the versatile artist that she is because it would cause an uproar among Whitney Houston's fanbase and stir up the whole debate of MC being the female artist who started the trend of merging pop, R&B and hip hop together.

I think that's more a matter of taste than a fact. Plenty of people enjoy R&B, and it's still a hugely successful genre. If that's the direction she wants to explore, it doesn't automatically make the music boring. Calling R&B "not the way to go" is subjective. What's boring to one person is atmospheric or emotionally nuanced to someone else. I'd rather judge the songs than the genre. If her vocal issues are affecting her performances, that's a separate discussion from whether she should stop making R&B. Artists adapt their sound all the time, and a quieter style isn't inherently a bad thing.

What if MC releases next year her best first single since Honey? Her vocals on the song have that buttery tone with the vocal layering and adlibs that she has been known for. This is what I foresee in the future. MC wants to make her return to the top again. MC17 just may be the album that will get her that Robin Roberts' interview to promote the new album.

They told Mariah she would likely lose the whistle register, not her singing voice completely. I've even seen some voice experts say that the nodules themselves don't create the whistle register, they may have just made it easier for her to access it, that she would only have to find it again after surgery.
I totally understand why she didn't want to have surgery back then. Her voice was still incredible, and I can see why she wouldn't want to risk changing something that was working. But now? Even the whistle register doesn't sound pleasing to the ear, so what's really the point? Personally, I'd rather hear her regular singing voice restored to a decent level than keep holding on to a pony that isn't really doing that one trick anymore.
Even though you didn't mention it, a lot of fans like to bring up Julie Andrews as a reason Mariah was right not to have her nodules removed. I don't think that's a fair comparison. Julie's voice was damaged because of complications during surgery that wasn't intended to treat vocal nodules or improve a singer's voice. Mariah would've been having a specialized microsurgery specifically designed to remove vocal nodules while preserving vocal function. They're two completely different situations. With today's technology and experienced laryngeal surgeons, that procedure has a very good success rate. Singers like Adele and many others have had vocal fold surgery and returned to performing at a very high level.
And let's be real, she's 57. That ship may have already sailed, but I still think she has one last chance to go out with a banger. Give us an amazing album with killer vocals, even if they have to be tweaked in the studio. I really don't care at this point.
Whatever she's cooking up in the studio, I just hope it's not another old tired safe R&B album. If there was ever a time to surprise everyone and do something completely unexpected, it's now. R&B is clearly not the hit making machine it was in the '90s and 2000s, and I don't think she's fully accepted that yet.
And please, don't make us wait another seven years. By then we'll all be comparing our cholesterol medication, and Mariah would be talking in her albums.

I really feel MC has been working hard to make her voice stronger. She has not performed publicly since April 16th which is almost 75 days ago. Surely, she would not be spending so much time in the studio recording new music if she felt her voice was not stronger. I need MC to release a fire album next year.

HFIA's first two singles lacked a full radio promotional tour. Sugar Sweet should have been a solo single. HFIA started good with the promotion but then lost the track and the plot. Type Dangerous was different from anything Mariah had done and she seemed to have a hell lot of budget for the video yet the video was lacklustre. And in what has become a tradition the video wasn't ready on time. Also we have all seen Mariah not being able to move properly in real life and needing help but you'd think in a controlled environment she'd have more coordinated movements but she looked stiff and unable to move. The video didn't age well. Then the other singles released I didn't even keep track because the promo wasn't even there. Sugar Sweet was a nice song (although to be honest I can't listen to it at all because I was in my first trimester and had constant nausea and that's when the song came lol so now when I listen to it I feel nauseous) anyways that too had no proper video. She seems to start strong and then immediately drop everything.

Something has caused MC to spend much of June in the studio. It seems like MC is not playing this time. MC and Larry Jackson probably had a meeting in May and created a plan for MC17. MC's 2016 New Year's Eve disastrous performance broke her as well. It broke her so much that she wrote Portrait. MC really hasn't been the same on any stage since that awful moment. I hope she can find her groove again on stage by moving more and singing live. Wouldn't it be cool if she partnered up with Tiana Taylor to help with her stage presence prior to launching MC17?

"I think Nick leaving broke her to the core." That's what I think too. And it's so sad. Mariah really thought it is a "love story" and he did "the impossible" but that clownish, egomaniac man only broke her inner heart. He and Stella are the worst. Back then I had a bad feeling when the news were telling that she will marry him after such a short time. But that he became such a nightmare, it was a bad surprise. Mariah always wanted a stable family for own (after all her experiences from childhood on) but he left her with two kids and made many babies with diffrent women. He's a shame as a man and as a person. A second divorce is one thing and hard enough, but Nick made her look like a fool. I also feel sorry for the children, they will have questions soon. I hope they can be a little support for Mariah when they are grown-up. Mariah needs a true soul, I hope one day she'll find him. She deserves happiness with a real man. But no more clowns, then it's better to be alone and find inner peace and strength again. Good friends can help too.

Jamie, that's exactly how I feel. I don't think most OG fans wanted Mariah to stay exactly the same forever. We just wanted her to keep the things that made us love her in the first place, her authenticity, her humility, and the focus on her talent instead of all the superficial stuff. Her metamorphosis on "Butterfly" was shockingly amazing to me, she was sexy without even trying.
Up until around 2012, she was still a diva, but there was still a lot of the old Mariah there. Now she seems like she's on autopilot. Her concerts are basically the same show over and over again. She just stands there, looking more focused on not missing one of her many lipping cues or forgetting the lyrics than actually connecting with the audience. Everything feels flat like the shoes she refuses to wear.
Like you and Bill, I'm just happy I got to experience her when she was at her best. At least we have all that amazing music to go back to, and those remixes were everything. For me, the closes she got to replicate 90's remixes was with "Triumphant", after that, most of it was pretty meh.
As much as I love Mariah, I wouldn't pay to see her live at this point. I feel the same way about Madonna. Her shows are definitely more interesting, and the production value is still impressive, but she barely moves. She's in amazing shape, but you can still see the difference. She's also still leaning on the same shock-value tactics that worked 30 years ago, and they just don't hit the same when you're pushing 70.

MC songwriting (113,981)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
Do you remember when MC's songwriting took a downward fall on Memoirs because she had to write lyrics to match The-Dream's melody and lyrics on his demo? Some critics called her out on that. Her vocals and lyrics were not that great on Memoirs. Fast forward to MIAM and this one reviewer said MC got the memo for MIAM. Her vocals and lyrics improved from Memoirs because she wrote about her broken marriage to Nick and motherhood. MC has been very unhappy for a while not being in love and having a family unit for Roc and Roe. Bryan gave her stability and love when they were together. It seems like MC lost motivation in the studio during the seven years it took her to complete HFIA because of her vocal decline. I hope she can find love again during the recording of MC17.

I think she opened up with Here for It All (the song), but the rest of the album have generic lyrics because she doesn't want to open up. She can't keep in singing about things from 30 years ago, which is her way of hiding.
Why can't she write about motherhood, about the hardships of being alone without partner, about aging, about being viewed differently by the public. It would her to sing some lines and thoughts in The Meaning of Mariah.
But I think she is scared. Frankly it's easier to write experiences for a book matter-of-factly, than put emotions into those words through a song, because she is an artist.
