Also, Mariah Carey Prisoner - she actually raps in that one herself from her debut.

Re: Ariana Grande (92,646) (92,650) by Terna from Nigeria
I think Mariah doesn't duet with females often because her vocals, harmonies, layering, melodies and key she might choose to sing in are on another level and the female duet partner might not be able to keep up and then there's also the tendency for it to become a screaming match. Lol, and honestly Arianna's vocals aren't mature enough to pair with Mariah's. She just gives me this kiddies vibe on all her recordings that I don't take her seriously.

Re: Hip pop (92,647) (92,649) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
To be fair, there were a few other efforts to bridge those two genres before Mariah. Michael did it for Black or White, Janet did it for You Want This, even Madonna did for I'd Rather Be Your Lover. But it was Mariah who popularized it. And like you mentioned, the idea that Mariah, an adult contemporary artist at the time (and probably the last artist in the world that anyone would have ever associated with ODB) had the audacity to go hip-hop then largely contributed to why it was such a pivotal moment.

Re: Ariana Grande (92,646) (92,648) by We are Lambily from USA
I hope so too, the media tried to do the same thing with Mariah and Whitney. But the girls met and they fell in love with each other. Ariana loves Mariah and Mariah acknowledged her, now they just have to meet and hopefully work together. Imagine the harmonies, the whistles at the end, the vocals, the hot video. It can end with Mariah wearing a crown and giving Ariana another one. So "the next Mariah" debacle ends. But it just a thought. I would rather have a uptempo then a ballad.

Mariah will never be able to recreate the magic she had with Whitney with anyone else. So switch up the gears or do whatever the ladies want. But her manager (forgot his name) has her in his control. That's why she couldn't support her friend through all this, but hopefully she cheered her up when the public and everyone else wasn't watching.

Hip pop (92,647) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
Mariah is credited with bridging the gap between pop and hip hop for female artists which is the formula today. Also the remix was also a number 1 song as well as the original. No one expected MC to pair with ODB and there [sic] creation would become the standard for female pop artists.

Waiting patiently for a song with Mariah and her. I'm sure it 99% won't happen but I'm gonna be the 1% hoping lol. It doesn't even have to be a hit or radio song, would love to just see what they would come up with, or even just a new remake of one of Mariah's songs.

Re: Billie and Finneas (92,643) (92,644) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
That's how I felt when I first heard two of their first songs from Billie's 2017 EP, Idontwannabeyouanymore and Bellyache. I knew their sound was going to be polarizing but interesting if they broke into the mainstream. And sure enough, they did. Call Billie's music depressing, morbid, sleepy, macabre, lethargic, whatever - these two have a certain signature to their craft that is cool to hear in today's mostly same-y soundscape. It's no wonder that of all the albums released in the first half of 2019, it was her release that was able to consistently remain in the Billboard 200 top 10 by the end of the year despite having just one #1 hit. She has the ability to connect to both today's generation and the older ones as well and the two songs I mentioned are good examples of how she is able to do both - there's a modern side, but there's also some old soul inside her. And for someone who just turned 18 months ago, her songwriting is quite mature for her age. And her hushed harmonies are gorgeous.

Of course like all sorts of revolutionary/innovative sounds throughout history, this will always be met by some resistance, but like you said, it still gives us hope that music still finds a way to evolve through innovation. It's not gonna be for everyone, but I'd rather have that than stagnation.

Billie and Finneas (92,643) by Dove from United States
I had only heard Bad Guy but I've been listening to more of their songs today and I'm quickly becoming a fan. They're giving me hope for the future of music.

I just had a Devil Got My Woman moment (from the movie Ghost World) with the Grammy performance of Billie Eilish singing When the Party's Over. I think I've listened to it for about four hours straight on repeat. It spoke to my soul. I know this is a Mariah Carey fansite but I feel like I need to share my experience. I'm impressed at how young she and her brother are and they have these deep songs that describe exactly how I've felt at certain times in my life. A lot of songs by young people today are superficial, or try too hard, or are generic, or seem calculated but these songs are so good IMO. I hope they continue to evolve. I'm excited to see where their musical journey takes them.

Pop Hip Hop crossover (92,642) by Will from Australia
I've never quite got why Mariah gets all the applause for making pop and hip hop collaborations a thing when it was done for years before her. And the claim that "but she made it mainstream" is just lies because the biggest selling song of 1992 worldwide was "Black or White" by MJ, The King of Pop - which featured a heavy rap verse. Who at that time was the most famous person in the world and the song went number one everywhere. Now if anyone made it mainstream I'd argue that that was the song, but even in 1986 Run DMC and Aerosmith had a Hot 100 No.4 with "Walk This Way". I'm sure there are countless other examples pre Fantasy. If anything, I would say Mariah made the image of a wholesome girl next door getting ghetto with rap thugs a thing and it's shock factor became its legacy.

I just screenshot that list to explore Bill so thank you. I trust your taste and knowledge of Mariah to already know that these are the go to remixes and tbh I've so many singles of MC with remixes on them I've never had the patience to go through them to find my favourite remixes. I know, I'm a bad Lamb.

Re: Hidden song - Love Take Time (92,639) (92,640) by Bill from the UK
Well the list Terna gave was "pregap" songs, these are songs a really before the first track on albums (where you need to rewind the first track on the disc to hear it). Regular hidden tracks appear after a gap following the final song. Love Takes Time was straight after Prisoner, so it was always intended to be on the album, but early promotional copies of the album either didn't feature it or didn't list it on the tracklisting, yet contained it on the disc. And yes, according to The First Vision, Mariah wrote Love Takes Time for Emotions, but Tommy et al thought it was too good to wait, as he felt the album needed more ballads.

I noticed that Alanis Morissette is missing on that list, so it might be older songs that should have been on that list as well. Who knows? Wasn't the song originally going to be on her next project, Emotions?

Losing someone isn't easy, especially a family member and then the head of the house along with a child? I can only imagine what his wife is going through now. I too lost my dad last December on the first. It hits you like a lightning bolt and you're never really the same. May God carry her and the remaining children in this trying time. This is so sad.

Re: Billie and Finneas (92,631) (92,637) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Appreciation for music has always and will always be a matter of personal taste. And we digest music in different ways as well - some go for the melody first, some the production, some the lyrical content, and some how an entire song or collection of tracks (I was about to say "body of work", but you know, Andrew would not let me hear the end of it even if it lacks the word "cohesive" ) works as a whole.

Much of the criticism hurled towards Billie is for being strange, for relying too much on mumbling and whispering, for creating darker-themed content, for not creating what some consider as conventionally "good" music. It doesn't matter whether those are fair or not because they're valid to those who make them and that's understandable.

As someone who appreciates what sounds fresh and new, Grammy or no, I appreciate artists who actually come up with something that challenges the comfort levels of the general public when it comes to what they consider listenable or even of quality. Sometimes it isn't all about innovation - sometimes it can be about bringing what's unconventional into the mainstream. Mariah actually wasn't the first artist to collaborate with a rapper in a song - Janet, Madonna, Michael, etc. actually did it earlier than her, but Mariah is mostly credited for that nonetheless because she was the one who did it well enough to gain mainstream success and widespread critical acclaim. But in the end the appreciation and accepetance of these things are something that we can and will always agree or disagree on in varying degrees. And that's okay.

The Remixes re-imagined (92,635) by Bill from the UK
Continuing my revised tracklisting series, I can't stay quiet any longer about The Remixes and how this was such a botched opportunity. On the surface, it was a no-brainer. A collection of Mariah's most successful and notorious club and urban remixes on a two disc compilation. In fairness, the collection started off well, but it always seemed as if the compiler gave up mid-way through the track selection on the second disc, and opted for a bunch of album tracks to fill up the disc space. Breakdown, Sweetheart and Crybaby had no place on the compilation. The only concession I would make is to include the "Mo' Thugs Remix" of Breakdown instead. Technically, Loverboy (Remix) and Heartbreaker (Remix) are found on previously released albums (and Fantasy with ODB, if we're counting #1's), but Heartbreaker and Fantasy are iconic enough to warrant being included. Miss You and I Know What You Want also appeared on re-issues of Charmbracelet.

There are some major omissions from the record. On disc one, I'd remove the boring paint-by-numbers Through the Rain remix and replace it with the Always Club Mix of Always Be My Baby. That was a huge oversight to not be included, and if it was due to its length, then they should have instead opted for the Def Classic Radio Version which cuts it in half.

As for the second disc. Wow, where do I start? Let me address the lack of I Still Believe (Pure Imagination Remix). Seriously, how could that have happened? It is one of the jewels in Mariah's remix crown. Also, to entice and treat the die hards, the only exclusive we received was the (not that great) So So Def Remix of The One. Where was the Drifting Remix of Underneath the Stars? Those Brazilian club mixes of Do You Know Where You're Going To and the Butterfly meme remixes? I had everything on that album except the remix of The One when it released, so I felt a bit cheated.

So, without further ado, here is Bill's re-imagining of The Remixes. Brace yourselves.

1. Dreamlover (Def Club Mix) - I wanted to open with Dreamlover as it was the one that started it all.
2. My All (Morales "My" Club Mix)
3. Heartbreaker (If You Should Ever Be Lonely Mix)
4. Butterfly (Meme's Extended Club Mix) - I replaced the Fly Away Club Mix with this rarity instead
5. Anytime You Need a Friend (C&C Club Mix)
6. Fantasy (Def Club Mix)
7. Honey (Classic Mix)
8. Always Be My Baby (Always Club Mix)
9. Emotions (12" Club Mix)
10. Joy to the World (Celebration Mix) - so Merry Christmas got represented, plus some of MC's best ad libs are in this version
11. Do You Know Where You're Going To (Mahogany Club Extended) - another rarity for the fans

1. Fantasy (Bad Boy with ODB)
2. Always Be My Baby (Mr. Dupri Mix)
3. My All/Stay Awhile (So So Def Remix)
4. Thank God I Found You (Make It Last Remix)
5. Breakdown (The Mo' Thugs Remix) *or* The Roof (Mobb Deep Extended Version)
6. Honey (So So Def Remix)
7. Dreamlover (Bam Jam Soul) - hard to find, but a brilliant remix. Appaz this was the original version.
8. Heartbreaker (Remix)
9. Underneath the Stars (Drifting Remix)
10. I Still Believe (Pure Imagination Remix)
11. Someday (12" Jackswing Mix) - want to show the poor debut some love, as it wasn't represented originally
12. Butterfly (Classic Bossa Nova) - beautiful rare remix
13. Anytime You Need a Friend (Soul Convention Remix)
14. One Sweet Day (Chucky's Remix) - I wanted to calm the compilation down and end with these two smooth soulful numbers.

Let me know what remixes you would add. I feel bad for not including CTTA and TGTBAW. I had to draw the line somewhere. Morales remixes started losing their appeal post-Honey, and TGTBAW (and Make It Happen for that matter), were just the boring industry standard that Mariah soon rose above.

I agree, she was even surprised that she won in comparison to the other nominees. I don't even know about the whole album, but that one song is highly overrated. Whatever though.

The music industry is really down. The Grammys are a joke. I just watchted the winners on TV, most of the winners I didn't know (luckily) but if that strange girl get's all the awards for the "music" oh my. Where have all the great artists gone? Sadly most are truly "gone" or have retired. Adele and Ed Sheeran are gold compared to the winner, the same with Bruno Mars.

I already posted the video with receipts that it was Michael's former handler that orchestrated his death. Michael fired him because he didn't trust him 6 months to a year prior to that last gig yet days before his death his signature was all over documents acting as Michaels handler behind his back.

Billie and Finneas (92,629) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
This might be an unpopular opinion, but Billie Eilish deserved it. The first time I heard When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go last year, I knew how much of a strong contender it would be for Album of the Year. It's not the prettiest set of tracks out there, and is practically an ASMR album with all the weird sounds and sinister whispering, but overall it definitely is an impressive feat especially when you factor in the fact that it was mostly created in a bedroom without much of the big record company studio polish. Who ever would think that an album dismissed as mumble-town would go on and become a worldwide mainstream hit off of the success of just one #1 single? Bad Guy and pretty much anything in its entire parent album sounds like nothing else on the radio these days, but this achievement feels more than a mere result of the novelty of the material, it also feels like the soundtrack of a new generation of listeners. It reminds me of a modern, darker Jagged Little Pill, although not quite as universal and iconic. The songs are deeper and better thought out than most would expect from such a young artist - the track "Xanny" was specifically produced to make the listener feel uncomfortable (and is very effective at it), the closing track "Goodbye" combines all the first lines of the songs that preceded it, etc.

Although Billie's sweep reeks much of the Grammys' tendency to drop a gaggle of awards on a new artist, it wouldn't hurt to cut Billie and Finneas some slack. Billie is one of the most unapologetically original artists to emerge in recent years, and her brother's production style is a breath of fresh air in today's sonic landscape. It is yet to be seen if they can actually outdo themselves, but that's another story. Music should also be about challenging the norm and pushing the boundaries of which sound is perceived to be acceptable, and both artists have definitely made 2019 musically more interesting.
