Re: ASCAP (92,824) (92,825)

You should Google to understand what ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC does. They really don't affect careers, but they do collect and distribute money associated with the use of Mariah's music and any other songwriters who I signed to them's music. The best analogy I can think of is like a music library, responsible for various songwriters/artists music catalogs. An artist has to contract with one of these "libraries" to track the use of their music in order to collect and distribute royalties. Mimi received a BMI icon award from that organization in 2012 when she was with them. ASAP has its own awards as well. Here is an article that describes what these groups like ASCAP does.

No vocal audit (92,823)

It's difficult to understand why strangers feel entitled to a report on Mariah's vocal health. Whatever happened to common sense? It's clear that her voice has been in the current process for quite some time - longer than it has been anything one might call stable. It would almost be like asking a model why she is aging so quickly, asking an aging professor to explain in his next book the precise course of his current mental decline, or a former child prodigy on the piano to recite for you the history of her loss of articulation and speed for each decade you've noticed something you don't like. Aren't there just certain things you don't demand of people you don't know? Isn't that the whole point of lore?

It still surprises me how strong her voice was when she was pregnant. It's interesting to consider the different factors that can make her voice stronger or weaker. It's unfortunate that her voice is fragile. But at least there is always hope that she will deliver a good performance, even though it's inconsistent

That has nothing to do with her being around or not. She needs one of those types of companies to monitor/collect money for the playing, streaming etc. of her written songs. She's just moving from BMI to ASCAP. Those are the two major entities for that purpose.
She was with BMI, but sounds like she tried SESAC, the other major company.

"There's a huge possibility she won't gain any newfound respect from non fans or people who just love to hate her."
This is my main concern with her explaining whatever might have happened. The Mariah hate train is as real as all her incredible accomplishments. The way I see it is that she has already come clean by not engineering Caution to perfection. I think she has finally moved on. But if she does choose to take on this topic, I hope she approaches it very carefully. While it may give closure to long-time fans, it might also backfire with the public who would likely take it as a confession that the very product she sells no longer works. It's a risk. I hope she leaves this topic alone for now, unless there's a compelling backstory with a lot of excellent phrasing.

Here to stay (92,818)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

We all should take it from Languishing: "And after all these years of enmity, envy and tears, it's a shame you don't know me at all."
If there's one thing we could say about Mariah, it's that she is not a quitter. Even during her lowest of lows, she has always tried to bounce back after and as long as she watches her health I don't see that changing drastically in the next 20 years at least. She will keep on making music, getting business/endorsement deals, etc. She will gradually slow down, but she's not gonna stop. She is in it for the long haul.
As for the constant touring, the 2010s has reassured Mariah that she just has to do the bare minimum and still sell tickets, so I don't see that ending anytime soon, especially since that's how she makes bank these days much more than actually selling new music. Kind of sad, but if younger artists like Gaga, Christina and Kelly are resorting to residencies these days, then Mariah likely isn't going anywhere, even with the accelerating deterioration of her voice.
Also, we need a pop legend in the industry who is still capable of making good records. MJ, Whitney and George are sadly not with us anymore. Celine's last decent one was in the early 2000s. Madonna hasn't made a great record since Confessions on a Dancefloor. Cher is likely just gonna do themed cover version albums especially after the success of her latest one. It's just Janet and Mariah who have actually proven within the last decade that they can come up with accomplished, critically praised albums of new music decades into their career, way past their prime. So why stop now? The holidays won't let her anyway.

I also wish she would tell the truth about it. She will always be the voice no matter what happened. But if Mariah would talk about it the annoying rumours will stop. Funny side note, I dreamed about MC last night. I was visiting a concert of hers and it felt so real. Lol Mariah is the only artist I sometimes dream about. I think that tells a lot.

Expectations (92,816)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)

When you look at an artist of Mariah's caliber, and the success that she has had expectations are always high. But I have come to the realization that Mariah is human just like the rest of us no matter how great she may be. She has given all of us moments to be grateful for, and just because she may not be able to exceed my expectations of her like she used to more times than not, my love for her art has not wavered. As humans we are not always going to like something that our favorite people might do but they does not mean that we should bash or make them feel less than, sometimes we have to look at our expectations for ourselves, and stop placing them on our favorite entertainers, and celebrities.

I agree she doesn't need to retire, but that voice talk definitely needs to be had. Her trying to ignore it and make it seem as if nothing wrong is the biggest issue that a lot of us have. There's a huge possibility she won't gain any newfound respect from non fans or people who just love to hate her, but I think it would go a long way with us. I personally am tired of hearing all the unofficial vocal coaches/fans with their assumuptions on what the issue is (drinking, touring, nodules, smoking, she's manic, etc etc) when she can shut us all up with an honest discussion. I've been at peace with her vocal changes for years and like you I do believe she's still a capable singer, but I'll never be at peace with her constantly avoiding the topic and fans continuously giving her passes to avoid it.

I don't think she needs to retire either, nor does she need to explain what happened to her voice. It's simply the clock ticking. Voices get tired over time, some faster than others. What happened to Julie Andrews was tragic and unfair, totally different from M's situation. Explaining how fragile her voice is or justifying her fondness for champagne isn't going to get her newfound respect. What she needs to do is to minimize the touring. Long sets no longer work for her. She's still more than capable of handling appearances. Take her recent Christmas performances on James Corden's show. I was impressed and proud. If Janet can still go on releasing new albums, so can Mariah.

I didn't say she needed to but she probably will. They all do. I think Lizzo carries her weight well and still looks hot. Maybe because she feels comfortable and owns it.
Honestly, I have issues with my own weight so I assume everyone else does too. Maybe I'm projecting. After my divorce from my first husband I was super depressed watching Netflix and eating a lot of take out. I got up to a size 14 (I'm only 5'3) and took a cab down to Tijuana to get the sleeve then a tummy tuck a year later. My first husband would always comment on how fat I was when I was married to him (even though I wasn't that overweight back then) and when I was a kid, whenever I gained too much weight, my mom would put me on a "diet" where she wouldn't call me down for dinner. So whatever mean comments I may make are rooted in self-hate.

I Had A Vision Of Love (92,809)
by Bobby A from United States

I may have figured out what is going happen to coincide with the book release. On MC's debut, she collaborated with one songwriter or producer. So, she said recently that she had a couple of men who she wanted to collaborate with. Maybe she has her eye on those singer-songwriters/producers who can capture the essence of Mariah Carey the album. Along with a remastered CD and vinyl re-release, we will get six new songs and the songs that didn't make the album to make a double album in September. Maybe she will do I Had A Vision Of Love: Up Close and Personal Tour at small historic venues like the Angel's Advocate Tour. Only time will tell what will happen, but I don't feel we are going to get a new album this year. Being the perfectionist she is, there is not enough time for her to record an album and release this year.

Mariah's voice (92,808)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|

I do agree that her current voice isn't good. During her Christmas concerts she couldn't hit a single high note, everything was lipped accept lower notes.
But do you guys remember her voice just a year ago, around the time she recieved the Billboard Icon Award? Suddenly she hit high notes an seemed so energetic on stage, she had fun. Was she manic?
Must Mariah be in a really happy place to have the confidence to hit those high notes, or are they gone forever?

Vocal decline (92,805)
by Dove from United States
| |
|
|
I don't think it would be for the fans. It's more for people who watch performances like this one and write stories and air it in the news that she can't sing anymore.
I haven't heard anyone call her crazy since she said she was bipolar. Nobody talks about Wendy Williams or Sharon Osbourne's botox and plastic surgery because they talk about it first. If they do, it doesn't matter because it's already out there. They're not ashamed of it so it can't be used to shame them.
I remember MC did address it in a special for E. She went to a doctor about her nodules but that was a long time ago and people probably don't remember. It was around The Emancipation of Mimi. She was wearing a plaid skirt, a pink or yellow shirt, and a sweater around her shoulders - preppy style.
I personally don't care because I know she can still deliver but maybe it would be beneficial if she addressed it and just explained that her voice is fragile and sometimes doesn't cooperate. Or whatever the issue is. I think the general public would be more compassionate if they knew what was going on.
Regarding touring, if she's making money and still likes doing it then she should keep doing it. I already saw her a few times so the selfish me wants her to stop and get working on some new music but ultimately it's about what's most beneficial to her.

She's wrapping up her residency all this month in Vegas. She's heading out to Hawaii for an arena concert in March. Just one. I'm not sure what that's about. I'm assuming she's adding more dates for her tour or using it as a jumping point to segue into something else.
Everyone's aware of what she was doing in December. She took some R&R in January. She went to that movie premiere and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Then, had to gear up for her last month of The Butterfly Returns. I haven't heard any specific news of what she's doing after Hawaii.

If Mariah still wants to release an album or two then she should go for it. But touring should probably stop. I would miss being able to go hear Mariah songs super loud in an arena and have a party but I can take it on the chin. You are correct that there are now more bad performances than good ones and that's an embarrassing shame. Her voice is getting even worse. I fail to see how she can take any pleasure in singing when it looks like she is trying to swallow gravel between bursts of "eh". Think back to when you thought Mariah's voice had slightly declined. For me it would be Charmbracelet (when I realistically longed for Butterfly voice) or then again at Memoirs (when realistically I longed for TEOM voice). Relatively speaking she sounds brilliant in both of those eras compared to now. Now I long for Memoirs voice. Expectations and standards fall away each year. It's getting worse.

Labels have nothing to do with YouTube or their algorithms. They attempt to show you things based off your history or things the program will think you might like based off what you watch. Which can be really far off the mark at times.
