Here for It All review (111,535)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
The style, arrangement, and verses are similiar to other 70s and 80s reconciliation duets like Love Power by Dionne Warrick and Jeffrey Osborne. The man and woman go back forth trying to win back each other by taking the blame for their break-up. The line in the PTS that says "Listen by yourself, please listen by your damn self" is both MC and Anderson saying enough is enough, so go ahead and be alone.

I love this album. I'm in the minority here but I don't like Play This Song - feels like it's missing something and needs lift. My favorite songs are Mi, Nothing is Impossible, Confetti, My Love, Jesus I Do, and Here For it All. Aside from Looking In, I think HFIA and Nothing Is Impossible are her saddest songs she's written. These songs have taken a dagger direct to my soul. It's how I've been feelings for a long time just without the melody or her lyrics to express it. It's so morbid and refreshing to hear her thoughts on her own mortality (it's like a diary entry to her children when she's gone). I feel it's directly related to her mother and sister's death and a warning about her own. I think she's deeply lonely in the world. Hearing her tell SZA that she doesn't have any best friend was very telling. I'm really shook at how confessional this album was. I'll be the first to say it, but this feels like her farewell album. This album makes me so proud of her. I'm glad we waited this long. She's the best artist.

"Rainbows will always remind you of me Please remember to look for them diligently And save a prayer, cause covenants are real, believe in things unseen But if you leave, just whisper something softly to the wind you want Mariah to hear"
Are we nearing the end? What is this MC? I cried with the thought of Mariah saying her final words. I genuinely feel so unsettled.

I really love the new album, it's so great. Confetti & champagne: title alone had me worried that this might be a cheap up-tempo, but when I heard it, I was amazed by how R&Bish it sounds. Nothing is impossible: is my absolute favorite Play this song: at first that was a bit underwhelmed, but then when I watch it together with the video, it started to grow on me. To be continued.

Here For It All is brilliant (111,525)
by MusicfanJ from Germany

It is fantastic. I've listenend to it twice now and I'm really surprised. Somehow I knew this album would surprise me. My first thought on it: I love "Play this song" and "I won't allow it". The whole 70ies vibe totally gets me. "Caution" was modern RnB, this album is mostly retro 70ies soul with modern RnB elements and I guess Randy said Disco-Gospel. I like "Sugar sweet" the solo version by Mariah much better than with the two ladies. It's not so overload. "Nothing is impossible" is a highlight of the album. The lyrics totally gets me and it has such a new tone for a Mariah song, but familiar at the same time. I could somehow imagine this on "Music Box". Strange I know. The cover "My love" is another highlight. I like "Jesus I do", I didn't expected that the gospel song has such a groove. With "Here for it all" the song I had more expectations but with the minute 4 it's almost meditative and I hear a little vanishing vibe. That's cool. I think this will be a song that needs time and will get better and better which each listen. The only song that I don't like yet is "Mi", maybe because of the lyrics. But it's really an interesting album that is different, which is good (I'm happy that there are no rappers this time) but it really feels free and new.

This album is fantastic. It has the same relaxed vibe as Roberta Flack's classic albums from 1970s. I love that the sound is defiantly throwback and that the album is not trying to be current at all. "Nothing is Impossible", "Play This Song", "Here for It All", and "In Your Feelings" are my favorites. "Type Dangerous" has definitely grown on me and works really well in the context of the album. I listened to the version of the album on Apple Music and waiting for my CD copy to come so I can hear the solo version of "Sugar Sweet" in the context of the album.
This has been well worth the wait, and it definitely tops "Caution" in my opinion. I think keeping the hip-hop influences to a minimum was the right call this time around.

Oh wow, I felt the exact same way about "Confetti and Champagne" - especially when the chorus hits, that sound from the early 90's that was so very brief and then it changed so quick, is captured on this song. When I was listening to it, I suddenly thought of Aaliyah for some strange, strange reason.

Out of all the albums in her catalogue, "Here For It All" reminds me most of the "Emotions" album, which is my second favorite after "Butterfly".
The vocals are, of course, not at the same level, but the up-tempos like "Play This Song" have the same relaxed/fun vibe of "Emotions" and ballads like "Nothing is Impossible" and "Here for It All" hit me the same way as "Can't Let Go", "And You Don't Remember", and "Til The End of Time". "Jesus I Do" gives me a little bit of upbeat "Make it Happen" type energy. Even though "I Won't Allow It" and "Champagne and Confetti" are sonically different, they give me the kiss off vibes of "If It's Over" and "You're So Cold".
This album is truly a resurgence of classic Mariah with a great new twist. Bravo, Ms. Carey.

Andrew's contributions required a particular taste to put it politely. By times I could agree with some of his statements but more than often his opinions and his reactions on the views of other members rubbed shoulders with a very single minded almost dictatorial point of view.

Is he still on this board? I used to be active on here like the better part of a decade ago and I remember a gentleman named Andrew was also active on here and he had the distinction of slating and despising pretty much everything MC made post Butterfly and I'd just be curious to know if he still holds that position. It's also quite possible that he has long since jumped ship.

It's nice.. specially for the current music scene standard, but I expected better from Mariah. And I don't mean the voice, I know it changes and I'm ok with it. You cannot relate easily to most of her songs like before, there's no structure, no correct rhymes, the verses seems so short, I'm gonna throw it in her medications, I'm sure she was most creative in her hypomania episodes since she has bipolar but medication just blunt those. She has fun cute lyrics that seems like written by one of her kids. I won't allow it has so more potential but its chorus is just one sentence. Nothing is Impossible is the best song on the album. Overall I feel the album is unpolished and each song is missing something.

I had the exact same thought about JID. It flows in the same vein as MIH. At first, I was hesitant to like JID. The song grew on me halfway through. I tend to prefer religious songs as ballads. It took me time to appreciate Mariah's version of Joy to the World. Now I love it. I think the same things are going to happen with JID.

My Love (111,516)
by jaker20 from US

I loved it. One of the best tracks. I wish she partnered with a movie or series to attach the song. It's a beautiful rendition.
@Randy, My Love, she (or he in the case of McCartney) was talking about both, because that's what he calls his wife Linda, that's why he called the song that to carry that double sense throughout the song. And that's pretty much Beatles right then, redundant and simple, Let It Be, All You Need Is Love, etc.
Maybe that's the direction Mariah wants to take in her next chapter, simple and leaning more towards the feeling of it.

Also... this cover of "My Love" by Paul McCartney and Wings is really good. I had been thinking about buying a compilation of McCartney's post-Beatles work, and this is definitely the push that I needed. I really love his song "Young Boy" from the album "Flaming Pie". I know this is a tangent, but I always preferred Paul to John Lennon. Far less pretentious and just thought his solo stuff was way better than John's.

Here For It All (review) (111,507)
by Randy from USA
| |
|

If Glitter is her 80s album, Here For It All is Mariah's homage to the 1970s. Lush band moments and disco beats abound on this her most laidback and dare I say it most cohesive album. While this is eons better as an album than the sprint-to-fall-flat Caution and the God-awful MIAMTEC, what those two albums have are standout moments like GTFO, A No-No, You Don't Know What To Do & Meteorite and this album to me is missing a hit. But there are thankfully no misses. Below is my track by track rating.
Mi - The beat and production is amazing. It's very short so it feels more like an interlude than a song. She sings in whisper false the entire song which some may be put off by but to be honest I'm so used to it that it doesn't bother me. I also don't like the rap singing (it's a very bling, ima diva name label dropping song) which I think are irresponsible since most of her lambs are probably rubbing two nickels together to purchase the album. I just think a 56 year old woman shouldn't be singing about her diamonds and Louis Vuitton. But thankfully she leaves the auto tune to the next generation and overall I like the song and will listen to it again. B+
Play The Song - I love the 70s vibe. A lyrically confusing song in terms point of view. She's singing to a boy who misses her and she misses him so they should play this song by themselves? Why not just talk to each other and work it out? Another weird thing is how Anderson .Paak starts talking like Lenny Williams and you get the feeling another verse or hook is coming but the song fades. C+
Dangerous Type - Here comes MC Mariah. We get it you wear name brands. I honestly have only listened to this song twice and this is the third time. I do like the sample and nostalgia better than Dedicated. Again lyrically, she doesn't describe 'the dangerous type' as much as she describes who she is and that's why she likes the Dangerous Type. C
Sugar Sweet - This production, melody and lyric on this are first rate. A little boring for a single choice but you can't dislike this song. She didn't need the features. They added nothing and she's singing to a boy so ... are you tryna have a foursome? An island song. B+
In Your Feelings - The production, melody and lyric are wonderful here. This has an amazing instrumental moment in the middle I really enjoyed. Mariah often alternates between full voice and falsetto. In this song, there are places she should be singing full voice and she's in whisper. There's times she is in full voice she should be in whisper. This is very reminiscent of Make it Look Good (better though than that snoozefest) and It's a Wrap (almost on its level). B+
Nothing is Impossible – It is a very dangerous thing for the writer of Hero, Through The Rain, Anytime You Need A Friend, Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme) and Almost Home to write an inspirational song. Anything you attempt will be compared to masterpieces. When the song started playing I was like, 'heard this before.' Then the strings came in second verse and I felt a lump in my throat, then second chorus she came in full voice and then the sustained note and the dramatic backgrounds and the piano playing solo at the end. I was in tears. What Mariah does best—make it through. Thank you for this one Mariah, maybe I can make it thru my right now. A- (The best song here)
Confetti and Champagne - After that emotional moment with the previous track, this was a perfect palate cleanser. It's all in whisper/false so I had trouble with the lyric but I think she's waiting for her new dude and celebrating it's him. This felt like 'the Impossible' from Memoirs. And she was out before I could get bored. Kind of an interlude as you're waiting for your man to knock on the door. B+
I Won't Allow It - I love this 70s vibe. This is You Don't Know What To Do's Little Sister and the annoying rapper is not there. I think the hook could be stronger. But I like this ... a lot B++
My Love - Another 70s cut but it feels like an album cut for an artist then, not their single. And the lyric is kinda stupid. Is she talking about her love or her love (a person)? And she's not saying much. There's so many remakes she could've chose. But I like the authentic nostalgic feel. C
Jesus I Do - Mariah is inventing genres. Gospel Disco. What sucks here is that she didn't really duet with The Clark Sisters. It sounds more like a soup of voices. Mariah has a habit of blending voices where it doesn't feel like any one has parts. So it begs the question, what was the point of asking them to come along for the ride? C
Here For It All - This feels more like the second half of Nothing Is Impossible. However, I am confused if she is talking to a romantic love interest that she will be here through anything or if this is her statement that no matter what life throws her way she will be present and make it through it all and then there's a gospel second half that doesn't make sense to me within the context of the song. This was supposed to be the album's grandiose finale and it comes off as it's trying to hard to be that without cohesive subtext. This song was a real disappointment and largely because Mariah hyped it up. C
