Re: Old Town Road 89,897) (89,906)

MC should had some high profile features like Drake, Beyonce, Robin Thicke and John Legend. The real question is why MC doesn't bring the pop songs like she use to do. Caution was good but it could have been better. I feel a lot of missteps were obvious in Caution's rollout in September. GTFO should have been released in July with a Drake feature with a long form video and dance remixes. With You should have never been the first single. Another radio friendly ballad should have been recorded and chosen. A Pop and Oak collaboration over an old school sample could have made Caution soar on the charts.

My favorites are "Can't let go", the beginning sounds like an angel, "Emotions", "Fantasy" and "Bringin on the heartbreak". And the "All in your mind" whistle is just cute.

Me against the whistle (89,903)
by Randy from USA

I love that someone brought up a new topic. Favorite whistles. But I kind of feel like I'm over the whistle. Here's why. When MC gave an interview during the Emotions era she said she didn't use it as much as she could have because she doesn't want it to be a gimmick. If you pay attention though, as the voice started to fray, she's been highlighting it more and more as she's using it as her license to prove she's still able to sing well. Like I've said before a whistle register does not make a great singer. And now in order to prove she can sing she puts out these videos of her singing whistles. Or in the case of that Pepsi performance in 2006 she whistled through Vision of Love's mid section. So whenever anyone brings it up, I kinda roll my eyes. But y'all keep on celebrating it if it makes your day.

The Emotions outro whistles are so iconic. I did love in 1991 when she was in good form and replaced the laugh at the end with ultra super sonic high notes. And then there's that one performance from the Musix Box tour where she goes nuts on the second "inside" lol.

Yes, agree about the hidden whistles. I remember freaking out when the whistles in the bridge of AIWFCIY were unveiled. Now I hear them everytime I play the song. And I forgot O Holy Night, that gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

Mariah releases an amazing album and it flops and Old Town Road is on its ninth consecutive week at #1? Are we living in the upside down or something? Someone let me know when things return to normal, until then I'll be living in the land of denial.

Why hasn't Mariah called up Drake for a collaboration? Do you think it's because the label is giving her a limited restrictive budget?

I didn't know Mariah had a new single out. It was late 1991 and 'Emotions' played on the radio. 1 whistle, 2 whistles, the bridge whistles and finally the outro whistles. I almost fell out of the car. Iconic.

My favorite whistles are Bringing On The Heartbreak, HATEU, So Cold, You Had Your Chance, Faded, and FLAB. There's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. I love all the unexpected background whistles. The ones where unless you are really listening you won't know they are there.

In an attempt to steer the conversation away from Mariah's posterior, do any of you all have a favourite whistle of Mariah's? Tough question I know as her catalogue is peppered with so many great ones. I love the first "inside" on Emotions as all the music drops out except the bass, and you're left with that piercing note before the beat kicks back in. Same song, the "you make me feel so h-h-h-high" at the bridge is phenomenal. I also love the Bringin' On the Heartbreak climax, all the background textures going on in Underneath the Stars, and that stunning "shining sea" on America the Beautiful (1990). Another great one is the Anytime You Need a Friend remix, where she's clearly having fun with it. Oh Mariah. What a gift you have.

I added Caution back to my workout playlist because it is my favorite track from the album. Those vocals and ad libs are crazy. However, I want another true pop album from MC next time. Somebody is going to whisper in her ear that Ed Sherran can put her back on top again. It will surely be her Divide or Multiply because Ed Sherran collaborated with MC.

Seriously. Butt injections? Who cares? She's had twins, she's a superstar, she's gorgeous and any work she has had done is done at beyond expert levels of perfection and subtlety. We know Mariah had her breasts done. Personally I think 3 times (1997, 2011, and again in 2017). Why would she be ashamed over some butt injections? people inject stuff into their face, legs, booties, necks etc. all the time. I have friends in their 20's, living regular middle class, pay cheque to pay cheque lives getting fillers and injections. Also, look at Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Joy Behar, all the Kardashians, they are all open and proud of the work they've had done and all look amazing. It's not like she's looking a mess; like when Courtney Cox, Renee Zellweger and Nicole Kidman got their whack faces (which all three have corrected recently, lol, thank goodness).

I love Jagged Little Pill and if Mariah was going lose at least she lost to Alanis. By the way, I still own Jagged Little Pill. Mariah should've won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 96 Grammy's. Mariah losing every vocal performance Grammy she was nominated for after winning Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Vision of Love is a travesty.
I would not argue that Daydream is a better album than Thriller. Sorry. Nice try though.

So true Marissa. I completely agree with "If someone treats everyone around them like trash, you will be next. When people show you who they are, believe them. Don't think that you're so special that you'll be exempt." A grown-up should have known that even with little knowledge of human nature.

It's seven months later and I'm still listening to Caution, from start to finish, at least once a day. I'm glad she made the album she wanted to make and hope she continues doing so. I wish she'd releases Caution as a single. She looks amazing so she could easily resurrect Agent M for the video. I'd also love a remix of Caution featuring Drake.

You would probably argue that Daydream is a better album than Thriller. Such is your blatant bias in absolutely everything you say that no opinion you give can be taken seriously.
Jagged Little Pill was a monument of its time, was the soundtrack to a whole year, let alone a summer, and was loved by absolutely everyone everywhere and forever. I must agree with William, were I to hand out the award, I would feel bare guilty for handing it to Mariah given what Alanis achieved.
That being said, Daydream was my company in my room on dark evenings for years. Every night it took me to a different world. It is embedded in me.

Completely agree with you. That Mariah got herself a new booty, who cares? I kind of suspected it, but Mariah let herself go with her empowered women bullshit. Allowing a kid to have control over her Social Media, and allowing those roaches to take pictures/videos that would eventually be used to shame her. It's not like she didn't know, nobody liked Stella, not even Wendy Williams, but she made her choice now she has to deal with the bootiquences. Mariah went from classy/mysterious to trashy while she was with that thing. This is just the beginning, remember that Mishka has a copy of Mariah's demo too, yes we want to listen to it, but not coming from those roaches.

I think Mariah was drawn to and flattered by Stella's whole "no one f**** with my clients"/"me and my clients against the world" brand that she sold her on. She was in a very vulnerable place in her life when she met her due to the divorce and I think Stella was ushered in by Ratner, who Mariah trusted. I think Mariah felt protected by Stella's abrasive and combative behavior. She may have even lived vicariously through Stella and used her as a mouthpiece to say things she never could say without backlash (i.e. when Stella called Tommy a relic, blamed DCP for the NYE debacle, etc). It reminds me of women who fantasize about having a man who would be willing to physically fight any other man who so much as looks at her because they think a man being jealous and crazy over them is loving and cute. Little do they know that man is probably going to go upside their head next if he's that unstable and reactive with others. If someone treats everyone around them like trash, you will be next. Mariah thought Stella's ridiculous and unprofessional behavior on her behalf was cute and then Stella used that same venomous energy on Mariah with baseless lawsuits and claims. When people show you who they are, believe them. Don't think that you're so special that you'll be exempt.
