I agree. Now I understand what "ahead of its time" means. Like most of MC's underrated songs.

Whitney giving a sub par performance does not your point make. No evidence presented other than a fan theory, that you often call others out for. Come on Andrew.

"Your only proof of this is a fantasy about what happened backstage and a look on Mariah's face that can (clearly, as we both see it differently) be interpreted in either way. So no."
I said clearly it was conjecture. I was trying to ascertain what was going on. It is evident to many people that Whitney was not behaving properly and the resultant performance was a hot mess with Whitney not singing the song as expected and Mariah clearly looking uncomfortable.
So no to you. That's a no no. Parlez-vous français? I can say it on Espagnol. I said nooooooo.

Re: Nick saga (94,412) (94,440)

Actually, their prenup guaranteed Nick a cool 10 million in case of a divorce. He's marrying someone in a much higher tax bracket than himself and marrying her would change his lifestyle. By getting him to agree to a settlement before the marriage would prevent him from demanding half in a divorce. The stipulation was they'd keep their own stuff, liquidate and divide up the assets they accrued during marriage, and return each other's gifts.
In the actual divorce, Nick promised to put X amount of dollars into a college fund for the kids while Mariah agreed to pay for all travel and accommodations for Nick and his mom to be present at all holidays plus birthday parties for the twins. That's why there's no spousal or child support. They both seem to be parenting well and taking good care of the twins otherwise.

With You (94,439)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom

|
Sounds like Mariah recorded a new version of With You in her home. I like it. It sounds like a live version. But the original cannot be beaten.
The original With You has slowly become one of my favourite Mariah Carey songs of all time. It is one of the most sensual songs I have ever heard, at once both exciting and calming. Truly I believe in ten years when people lol back to Caution, With You will be declared a missed masterpiece.

William has this wrong and I suspect he is trying to not imagine such a focal moment as Mariah's Academy performance as anything less that great. But it is clear on Mariah's face that she is uncomfortable with the unpredictability of what the hell is going on. It is a sonorous disaster.
I am not one for conjecture; I like facts. But there is something in me that says they met up backstage, just before they went on, and Mariah looked at Whitney and thought: "Oh, f**k."

Whilst sunbathing today I played the "Mariah Upbeat" playlist I have on Spotify. The last 2 songs are You Don't Know What To Do followed by A No No. The latter is good but the former is immensely fun. The next album should absolutely be upbeat - and not "club" upbeat, "party at the beach" upbeat. I swear I don't need any more rappers to spit shite about how much money they have, what brand of anything they are drinking and what bitch they plan on doing that night. The rap in You Don't Know What To Do is really weird but totally brilliant.

It certainly didn't go where *I* thought it was going. Did anyone else think Randy was buying a quick feed for the guy he had chained in his basement and the Red Bull was so he could make it through night?

I was at a convenience store at 1:30 AM this morning buying a sandwich, cool ranch Doritos, a honey bun, a sugar free Red Bull and a Diet Dr. Pepper. I swear I am going somewhere with this. My All was playing over the store's speakers and I was singing along. Then I'll Be There came on. And then Emotions came on, and the store clerk started singing along and I said, while she was ringing up my healthy purchases, "someone likes Mariah Carey" and she laughed and we both went in to singing the first verse and I messed up the words. I will be turning in my locker keys, my glitter and rainbows today at 3.

Andrew, what an on point analysis of that performance. That's how I've always analyzed it. MC sang it as recorded. There's a point where she was a bit frustrated but kept it cool. At some point WH was too loud and MC held back, she is a genius, otherwise it would have sounded very untidy.

At the Oscar's performance, the bridge is where Whitney sang Mariah's part, melodically that is, where they harmonize "But when you're blinded by your pain, can't see your way clear through the rain." Whitney's part is soprano and Mariah's tenor. She kinda ruined the blend there, I guess that's why Mariah paused. And yes for some strange reason, Mariah's microphone was lower in volume than Whitney's.

I'm going to have to rewatch the Oscars performance. The Oprah performance seemed like a much more even playing field. One thing I've always remembered about this song is the music video. I think MC looks incredible, for starters. But also, I've always thought there were some faces being pulled by WH - take a look at 4:10 and 4:23 of the video on Whitney's Vevo channel on Youtube - she has a bit of a smirk, and both parts are big "Mariah" moments.

Caution album (94,421)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|

I have to admit that Caution was Mariah's and Bryan's love story and the obstacles that they faced in 2015 to 2017. So, I was thinking about what will the new album mainly be about. MC's life has really been drama free since Caution. It is really hard to say this time around now that she has begun writing and recording the new album. I really feel that the new album will be more pop and top 40 than we have gotten with previous albums. Hopefully we will get another Hero or There's Got To Be Away or Love Takes Time.

We will have to agree to agree. Sorry I didn't see your post. I am the first Mariah stan in line to criticise but I pride myself on telling the truth. But, here, I think Whitney intentionally overpowered her in the choices she made.
Mariah is singing the song as you hear it on the record. Whitney is quite evidently not and quite horrible to listen to in many parts of the performance. Mariah can be seen moving the microphone away from her mouth when doing loud chest notes etc. as she, and most people, always do. Whitney rarely moves the microphone. She is practically licking it like an ice-cream. It looks like one slightly strong inhalation will result in a trip to the ER or a very uncomfortable morning on the loo. In the big note part where I think Mariah should have done a whistle run Whitney is shouting into the microphone when she should not be - it is not so on the record. That climax sounds horrible.
I think Whitney was high and was out to prove a point and I think it made the performance sound horribly aggressive. And for me the tester would be this: put this to record with accompaniment and see if and producer allowed this to be published and sold. It would never happen.
