Oh crap, I responded to Voldemort. That was a personal failure on my part. Sorry. It might be true that some of us look for something different in Mariah than others. Some wish Mariah was something she's never been; and some of us treasure who she is and what her humanity and artistry has to offer this world.

You are a laughable misleader of gargantuan proportion. I don't object to you believing whatever it is you need to believe to maintain a level of comfort in your mind - it is your life and if you are so fragile then do whatever is you need to do to live your best. But rational people will and must object when you and your ilk try to paint the false narrative true in other people's minds in order for your own suspension of disbelief to be maintained.
That you give that performance a 6, also, smacks of disingenuousness. Either that, or you're just lost irredeemably inside delusion and/or galactically stupid and/or have absolutely no knowledge of the details of Mariah Carey's live performance history.

Thank you Jamie. That was such a thoughtful and understandable response. That's how I've seen and understood it tbh. Much of the UK don't understand or relate to her post Butterfly. I personally didn't relate to Mariah until Charmbraclet (I was in grade 11 at the time). I remember Mariah being the hottest artist in my grade 9 year (from a Canadian perspective), which was Heartbreaker era. Before that she was "Mom's music". Then when I went to uni, everyone was obsessed with TEOM album, and then during the E=MC2 era every queer club in the country was blasting Mimi. After those impressionable life moments, me and my friends have been buckled in for the ride.

The UK loved early Mariah, they just didn't like the whole transition from vocalist to diva. Obviously I'm not speaking for myself as I've continued to follow Mariah. I just think for the UK in general they didn't get the transition. I think she lost a lot of mature adult fans from Butterfly onwards.

I want to ask an honest question. What does the UK Lambs need or want Mariah to do? I lived in the UK for four years. Mostly on the Welsh border by bishops, as well as London proper (your train system is the best in the world as of my experiences tbh). Why are you UK guys so hard on her? And if I hear "1993-1996, please, I maintain Mariah's most artistic, expression and performances were post 2002 , consistently". What I see Mariah from 1988-1996 is her doing a job. From 1997-present, I see an artist. If her voice broke? Who cares? It's park of her human journey, that makes her so relatable.

It's funny how Mariah made Christmas cool and now everyone wants in on the moment, but clearly she's the only one who's genuine about her love for the holidays. It would be crazy if for some strange reason, another song in her holiday canon suddenly gains steam and hits number 1. This would mean a tie with The Beatles. . I see it happening for "Oh Santa" down the road.

Agreed: RATCT is ghastly. Also agreed: "Christmas Time Is In The Air Again" should be given a lot more focus in the lead up to Christmas next year. It's a song that Mariah can probably reproduce live still but, moreover, it's actually a beautiful, exquisite song and arguably should be more successful than it is. There's nothing around quite like it.

Yes RATCT is more of a family sit down get together kind of song.
AIWFCIY is more festive and celebration with a timeless message. These two songs will play together forever.
Oh Santa has a great beat and a fun song, but it has a stalker-y message. Maybe that's why its still not grabbing the public.
When Christmas Comes sounds like a real classic-in-the-making to me.
Christmas Time Is In The Air is a great stroll around Christmas song, when you're driving or walk-around-the-park or in a bus.
I'm re-discovering The Star. What a beautiful song. It deserves more love.
Miss You Most At Christmas can be the next Last Christmas with a good video. It has a similar dreary sad message.
These are all Mariah originals.

I'd give it a 6; she looked happy, healthy and nervous. But most of all she looked like she was having a blast. Why is anyone expecting her to be a lightning bolt or prancing around the stage? That's not her gig, never has been. The most dancing she's done was in the Glitter club scene. So demanding that Mariah needs to boot it around stage, just like "fetch", it's never gonna happen, so enjoy how amazing she is in all her other talents. Of which Mariah has many.

I liked the performance up until the solo whistle. Mistakes happen and it was live, but not good.
I'm thinking that maybe the stiffness might be due to medication of some sort - maybe bipolar meds? Cognitively she's fine, but the stiffness is the odd part. She's obviously not a dancer but she knows how to cover a stage, so it's not a lack of experience. At the Hollywood Bowl night I went to while still stiff, she moved around a lot better - and by herself mostly - so I'm puzzled. It could also be a back thing. Oddly enough, the energy in the room was fire.

The stiffness is possibly, the heels too. Its higher than ever this year. Last year, she was walking and moving about more comfortably on stage, but this year the outfit is tighter, and the heels higher. Hopefully it's not medical. Mariah has never really been as active like say Cher or even Madonna.

Bless Brenda, but I think RATCT is just terrible. For a Christmas song it doesn't feel like it goes anywhere, and the melody is flat, its neither here not there.
Of the songs in that era, Darlene Love's Christmas Baby Please Come Home is a much better song. There's a reason why Mariah's version is her second more popular Christmas song, because the song itself is great, and then she updated it. But I don't think she's going to promote it more than that. Maybe they can remix the two songs.

Thank you for this. I unplugged my router, gave it a little kick, plugged it in and turned it on again and watched a collection of Mariah performances from the last ten years. She was like a lightning bolt zipping up and down the stage, belting pleasant sounding, in-tune glorious notes that rivalled the studio takes. All this time it was my WiFi connection, what a fool I've been.

Don't mind them. A lot of people here are actually Celine Dion or Madonna fans that also like Mariah's 1993 work and they're upset she deviated from it. We will never hear the end of it. You can tell who they are because every gossip about Mariah that is negative they will believe as unquestioned truth and anything positive requires a receipt. They can't tell if she's singing live, singing with a track, or lip syncing. They just assume if she sounds bad it's live and everything else is trickery. There are a lot of gay people here and they get really upset about that topic for some reason, but you are not the only straight man here. English does have far too much slang, and too many abbreviated terms, so I can understand how confusing it must get for non native speakers. Welcome.

Seeing as Mariah doesn't even pretend to lipsync now, she might as well just let Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande to a duet on stage while she watches, claps, and says "I love you" a few times.
