MC's best bridge (114,097)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |

Maybe not the "best" bridge but a bridge I really love is "For the Record". Uniquely using her discography to describe her feelings.
For the record You'll "Always be a part of me" no matter what you do For the record Can nobody say I didn't give "my all" to you For the record I told you "underneath the stars" that you "belong" to me For the record It's obvious that we just "can't let go" of us "honeyyyy".

Wholeheartedly agree, Mariah sampled My Boo by Ghost Town DJs on the HATEU remix way earlier. It seriously irked me when the song had a revival in 2016 on TikTok. Like hello, MC's sample genius already tried to reintroduce it to new audiences 7 years ago.

I think not only does she not jump on trends she somehow always does trends years if not decades before it becomes viral and doesn't get enough praise for it when she does it because people don't get it at that point. Like the whole retro/funk/post-disco vibe of Glitter, the reggae/island music vibes of Cruise Control, the chipmunk/sped up sound like You Got Me, heck even rapping on Prisoner and doing the rap-sing on several TEOM songs just to name a few. I'm not even getting into her resung remixes and infusing pop-hip hop because she does somewhat get credit for it.

Mariah was more or less forced by Tommy and her label into pop music. Because they wanted the music to sound more white. She was always attached to Rnb. Doing the remixes she was a bit more free in her artistry. Eg. [Anytime you need a friend] remix, [Always be my baby] ( with Jdand Xscape ) etc. There she implemented gospel and soul and even dance. She wanted the songs to sound more Rnb. After her divorce from Tommy she could finally do what she really wanted. Butterfly was her Rnb influenced start. Many fans which liked pop and ballads better, were not so happy about it. She was pretty successful with Rnb too. In my humble opinion: I think she has to stick with what she likes. We have already more than enough pop singers in the business. What I like about Mariah is, that she doesn't hop on every trend and that makes her authentic. Many stars change genres to stay relevant. Eg Madonna, JLo etc.

Yus I saw it yesterday and I was so happy. It's literally the first song that plays on one of the most highly anticipated shows. Also I didn't catch this but there was a Mariah Carey Emotions album in Elle's room.

HFIA (114,062)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
HFIA started good with the promotion but then lost the track and the plot. Type Dangerous was different from anything Mariah had done and she seemed to have a hell lot of budget for the video yet the video was lacklustre. And in what has become a tradition the video wasn't ready on time. Also we have all seen Mariah not being able to move properly in real life and needing help but you'd think in a controlled environment she'd have more coordinated movements but she looked stiff and unable to move. The video didn't age well. Then the other singles released I didn't even keep track because the promo wasn't even there. Sugar Sweet was a nice song (although to be honest I can't listen to it at all because I was in my first trimester and had constant nausea and that's when the song came lol so now when I listen to it I feel nauseous) anyways that too had no proper video. She seems to start strong and then immediately drop everything.

HFIA (114,061)
by Lambi from USA

I thought the HFIA rollout was a real attempt to somewhat get that influential connotation back, hence purchasing the Vanguard award and having the mainstreamed iHeart tribute. Not sure if she is seen any differently though.
It's interesting Mariah is quite literally at a stage where she is having to be serious about really leaving her mark. The projects cooking now are legacy based and making sure she ends it on a high note.
I didn't realize this is probably a major contributing factor to her sadness. She is years ahead of us, career-wise, so many things unbeknownst to us behind the scenes. She must've started through document finalizations and living the end of the show now.
It makes sense that now having to go through the process of seriously solidifying your will, royalty arrangements, and insurance policies would be rather tough. Seeing your last efforts on print would be bittersweet.
As much as she is eternally 12, biology is real and she is of retiring age. I'd imagine, especially for someone like MC, having to eventually let go of the one thing you unequivocally devoted your whole entire life on must be pretty freaking heavy.

Something has caused MC to spend much of June in the studio. It seems like MC is not playing this time. MC and Larry Jackson probably had a meeting in May and created a plan for MC17. It has been reported by Nostradamus Insider that she has been in the studio recently with Charlie Coffeen (Muni Long/Kuk Harrell). The-Dream announced at The BET Awards show last night that he was in the studio with MC last week.

Mini series (114,058)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
There's so much to Mariah's story, I'm glad a mini series is being envisioned for it and of course Mariah will be involved because after all it is her story but I hope she lets the filmmakers do their thing and not try to control every aspect. One thing about Michael I wished for was if it was a miniseries because this man has been famous since like he was 8, and started his journey even younger so there just so much to his story a movie can't encapsulate his complex life but alas I'm glad it helped boost his songs again and I agree for Mariah I hope her movie focuses strongly on her artistry and talent beyond being just "The Voice".

True. Beyond the obvious purification of certain characters, the movie was really well done. I loved how they fully recaptured each decade, how closely the casting resembled the real people, and how they truly showcased the essence of Michael.
His abnormal love for animals, his musical genius, the way he worked, the inception of each song, how the lead single was ever-changing before the release and how the track listing for Thriller kept being rearranged. It was all done with so much meaning behind it.
I too would love for people to see MC through such a creative lens. My All, The Roof, Fourth of July, and Breakdown being written in real time after every rendezvous with Derek would make such an insane movie scene sequence.
To see little Mariah come to life would also be fun. Her effervescent personality; how innately inquisitive, creative, strong-willed and sassy she was, how she navigated the difficult turmoil in her household, and how her wise mouth shut down her bullies.
People would finally understand that she really was made for superstardom and start putting some respect on her name. I feel like even a deeper backstory on Pat and Alfred would also be such a revelation.

Taylor Swift (114,057)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Unfortunately Mariah never had a strong enough team to market her properly. I think the only time her PR was strong post Tommy was the roll out of TEOM marketed as the Phoenix rising from the ashes. After that she got too comfortable again and thus now she is only known as the Christmas lady which don't get me wrong many artists would kill to have a song and season that unfailingly puts them at the top of the charts every year but Mariah is so much more than that. Quite like Michael, Mariah has really birthed many careers of so many artists that came after her but she wasn't able to etch that legacy in people's brains.

I don't like Taylor Swift that much. But she is a good entertainer and has lots of mainstream hits. Here in Switzerland the youger people are obsessed with her. I think in Germany too. Sadly when I talk about Mariah, people act like: Does she still sing? Or they begin with the eyerolling. Usually they say that they don't like this (Divagehabe) difficult personality which is not reliable for normal people who are not in this business. That makes me sad. Because she did so many albums and many resung remixes. Rarely Mc comes to Switzerland because the people here listen more to pop and rock. That is why I go to Germany when she rarely gives a concert. But also in Germany I don't hear always positive opinions about MC unfortunately. I don't know what you people in Switzerland and Germany think about it.

Other than Mariah I’m a massive MJ fan. I recently watched the biopic. Any other fans here? The biopic was really well done albeit of course quite sanitized. But it did what it was meant to do, introduce the new generation to MJ and my socials are now flooded with Gen Z and younger peeps going crazy over the magic of MJ. So I really hope we get a great budget movie of Mariah to introduce her to the next generation. She has a very interesting backstory and her artistry is next level so I really hope they focus on that. It’ll hopefully lead to the younger crowd to know her catalogue more than her just being considered the Queen of Christmas. Also hi everyone, I hope you all are doing well. Sorry I have been MIA. Baby keeps me busyyyyy. Hahah.

Taylor Swift (114,053)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Ugh Taylor's relentless PR annoys me to no end. She's always the victim and always using that narrative to manipulate her fandom to purchase the same thing again and again. I mean you've got to give it to her, the ability to continuously scam people into buying 30 different variant of the same album (she had like 32 versions of I think The Tortured Poet's Department). Whereas someone like Mariah earned her stripes by actually "selling". Don't get me wrong I listen to a bunch of Taylor songs but they will never be on the same level as Mariah. I hope now that Taylor is getting married she decides to step back like Rihanna lol but Taylor loves the fame too much. She's addicted to chart success, doesn't care about longevity.

The records are eventually going to be surpassed by someone else. It's unfortunate that Mariah is being supplanted by someone as irritating as Taylor Swift, but oh well.
And whenever you spar with Whitney fans, just remember to ask them "How many of Whitney's number one hits did she co-write and co-produce herself?" That will shut them up.

Article: Mariah Carey wants $27M for her NYC penthouse triplex (113,617)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
This makes me so sad. This property didn't just feel like a property, it had a very symbolic meaning to Mariah. She talked about how when her mom used to drive her to the city as a kid she would dream of one day owning a home with views of the Empire State Building and then she achieved that. So it kind of symbolized her accomplishing her childhood dream and her making it big. This was also her safe haven for the first time because after having a traumatic childhood, followed by having to sleep on the kitchen floor of her friend's apartment during her struggle days and then being trapped in "Sing Sing" Mansion with Motolla, this was the first time she had her own peace in her own space that she owned independently. Also NY is where Mariah's heart is. Lastly it is iconic because of the Cribs episode and being on AD magazine. I honestly thought Mariah might sell everything but never this. So I'm quite sad to see this and I hope everything is ok with her.

Eekkk I saw some snippets and what is this mess? Why do they always hire the wrong people to do Mariah tributes? It all sounded like they came for a Mariah karaoke night. Poor Mariah was fighting for her life not to leave haha. Also I was excited for a Charlie Puth rendition, why did he choose ISB? Of all the incredible songs Mariah has written herself he chose a song that not only wasn't an important part of her career but more importantly it wasn't written by her. I honestly feel bad that a musical titan like Mariah always ends up with these messy tributes.

I couldn't agree more. The performance was such a mess (I think) that I could barely recognize the song. Mariah, who was caught on camera, appeared to be disapproving but maintained a neutral expression out of respect. Did she ever mention in an interview before that she doesn't like other artists singing her songs? I'm curious how she has dealt with that situation.

Great news (112,924)
by Lambi from USA

Last October, I stopped by Gamma Headquarters in LA in search of work and was fortunate enough to make a somewhat direct link towards Mariah's team. Long story short, I've recently been brought on in a new capacity. Of course, for contractual reasons, I'm not able to share in-depth behind the scenes. What I can say is that I'll now be part of a new, real-life Mariah community, which likely means stepping away from this board, not for good but at least for a very long while.
It's truly been a wonderful experience here. Dove, Giovanni, Mimi L, MusicFanJ, Terna, Lainsky, Randy, Joachim, Lara, Rashidi, and TJ, I've loved reading your stories, ideas, and reviews. I'm hopeful I'll continue to work my way closer to MC, and I'll absolutely try to relay your ideas and perspectives.
Thank you to MCArchives for all the festivity and warmth during my short time here. God bless, and I'm so grateful to have shared my love for Mariah with all of you. I wish you all nothing but the very best, darlings.

Was Celine the original JLo? (112,913)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Haha call me a hater but JLo deserves the shade. She's incredibly fake, has no moral compass when it came to using other artists' material to get fame (so many of her songs have vocals from other singers she passed off as her own, she also stole from Usher) and basically is full of herself. Is she the only one at fault? No because Tommy facilitated it and JLo took what she could to advance in her career. But yes Céline is an angel and super sweet so I definitely disagree with Mariah's treatment of her. I don't think she should have made statements about Celine's Divas performance.

I find it sad that she thinks it's ok to diss anyone at all in the public. It's kind of trashy and unnecessary. I think J.Lo is being the bigger person.

I really would like to know Tommy's thought process when he thought JLo could be the new Mariah? The woman doesn't write, nor does she sing (won't even get into her range, she can't sing point blank), doesn't produce. She's basically an entertainer with a pretty face. If you're going to try to replace a once in a lifetime phenomenon like Mariah, you need to put your money where your mouth is and match her skill for skill. I always found it sad that Mariah dissed Céline so much. Céline is so sweet and always has nice things to say about others.

I only corrected those "insignificant technicalities" because those were the only things that were, well, technically wrong. Maybe I should've studied law and become a lawyer as Bobby A said. Just kidding.
I said I mostly agree with you on this topic and I truly meant it, expect for, maybe the My All video part. Everyone can have their own interpretation of a music video and that's fine.
Well back to this topic, I always had this feeling that Mariah treat other female singers in distinctively different attitudes: respect the senior divas (Aretha, Patti, Whitney, etc.); friendly to the industry recognized divas (Janet, Mary J, Beyonce, etc.); indifferent or somewhat bitter towards some of the vocal powerhouses (Celine, Christina Aguilera, etc.); acknowledging some younger generations depending on whether she "knows" them or not (Rihanna, Ariana, Taylor, etc.); and somewhat hostile towards certain ones (Madonna, JLo, etc.).
The difference between Celine and JLo is that Celine had the voice, the hits, the sales that might've threatened Mariah during a certain period, so I think Mariah more or less treated her as a competitor more than just a label mate. Meanwhile JLo, quote Mariah, "Her thing is something different". She was like Tommy's weapon to take Mariah down with the Firecracker sample and Ja Rule feature incidents. It is natural that Mariah treated her as the "thief" for stealing her most cherished thing, which is music and songwriting.
At the end of the day, Mariah never really spoke ill of Celine except for maybe that Divas Live thing. But for JLo, Mariah will never know her.

She'll definitely lose steam at some point but I don't think she's done yet. Taylor unlike Rihanna lives off her fame and I don't think it'll be as easy for her to leave this behind. Taylor loves the spotlight, that's why she's been dropping albums left and right.

I think I'd rather go with scenario #2 and have 2-3 more non-holiday Mariah originals go to number one. I think it would give Mariah some confidence back and refocus her attention away from legacy residencies and holiday tours/residencies.
I'm not sure that Taylor Swift will break Mariah's current record for most solo number ones. She's getting married, so she's clearly preparing for a phase where her personal life is more important than her music. Swift doesn't really have a core musical identity like Mariah. She has shape-shifted across almost all of her albums from country to country-pop to pop to "folk", following trends and rehashing ideas that were done better by other artists before her. Her career trajectory has been very much like Madonna's in that way. Swift's popularity will fall off sooner rather than later, and she'll lose momentum.
Rihanna debuted on the scene around the same time as Swift (mid-2000s) and was releasing a lot of albums and notching a lot of #1s. But then she completely disappeared from the music industry after 2016's "Anti" and hasn't put out an album in almost 10 years. I think the same thing will happen with TS soon.

Bobby A I adore you, but please let's never compare Taylor to MJ. This is coming from someone who listens to Taylor's music and I too have quote how Taylor is definitely a master marketing machine. But MJ is on a league of his own and his career hasn't been matched and won't ever be matched. Beyoncé tried and failed. MJ was a phenomenon, a total powerhouse and launched a billion careers due to his influence especially at a time where there was no social media. He was pure talent, no gimmicks, no clever marketing. He was just the kind of artist we will probably never experience again. Taylor Swift is a powerhouse in her own right but I don't think she is of Michael's caliber and influence. She knows how to control the narrative and market herself and that's what works for her.

An enormous amount of country fans followed her into the pop realm because country music had become so country pop when she released her Red album. When 1989 was released, she had another million fans who just helped TS cement this pop hold she has right now. Also, you have to consider that these fans - teenagers and adults - have enormous sympathy for TS because of her recording masters fight with Scooter Braun and Big Machine Records. Finally, her savy business sense to draw them to purchase the many versions of her albums and TS merchandise is something that we have never seen before by a female artist. She is the female version of Michael Jackson in 2025.

Bruno Mars' midas touch (112,448)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

While I agree the song is primed and ready to have Bruno's vocals added because it is so his style I think Mariah maybe upset with Bruno. Didn't she mention him a few years back in a tweet, tagging him and asking for a collab and he never replied. Maybe he replied in person who knows but if he didn't that's a big insult especially when the queen came knocking. So maybe that's why she hasn't reached out since then.

Maybe this is my one correct prediction. Lol. I can hear Bruno's verse and riffs taking IYF to another level. We will see in January.

A little life update (112,447)

I wanted to share some good news with my little MCA family, it's also the reason I've been MIA mostly the past few months. My husband and I are expecting our first baby, a little baby girl. You best believe she will be introduced to Mariah really early on so we will have a baby lamb joining the lambily soon. Who knows down the line Eric may have a new member join this board haha. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Promise I won't be influenced by Nick Cannon's baby names.

I won't allow it (112,446)

I can't believe at one point I wanted Mariah to get back with Nick so that her family could be whole again. She probably made the best decision leaving him. I wouldn't be surprised if they drifted apart because Nick was jealous of Mariah's fame, since he has such a big ego and of course some cheating on the side. He seems to be a very controlling person with this "harem" mentality. Because one of his baby mamas - (mom of Legendary Love) called Bre is on this reality show called Selling Sunset and she seems completely brainwashed to believe the relationship arrangement they are in is a healthy one - basically he can have relationships with as many women but she's not allowed to date others. Brainwashed is probably not the correct word because of course a lot of these women are with him due to his money and connections. Bre said she doesn't get child support because apparently after a certain number of babies you don't have to pay, but even if that's true his connections are valuable to her as she sells (or pretends to sell) luxury real estate in LA and the connections help. Anyways Nick is vile and I'm glad he's gone, just sad that for him E=MC2 didn't get a fair shot at a big success.

You guys, I just saw ET covering Monroe's clarification about having only one full sibling, and they listed all the other kids' names:
• Golden • Powerful Queen • Rise Messiah • Onyx Ice Cole • Zion Mixolydian • Zillion Heir • Beautiful Zeppelin • Legendary Love • Zen • Halo
At first I genuinely thought it was satire. LMAO. But no, those are really their names. I already felt bad for the kids, and now I feel even worse. What in the world?
Mariah saying "corny like fritos" was absolutely accurate. I don't think I can dislike Nick Cannon more. My goodness, those poor children.

I love that what started from a low quality phone video moment of Mariah embracing her reign of the holiday season has blown up to a full Sephora high budget video moment. Super cute and congratulations Mariah. She keeps on staying relevant and killing it.

The problem with every lamb - HFIA charts (111,792)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

I couldn't have said it better because that's my thought process too. Do I think Mariah will get another #1 just by herself? Possibly not if I'm setting realistic expectation. Is it possible via a hot collaboration? Very possible. But lambs can't be blamed for expecting chart success when Mariah herself keeps reminding everyone about her #1s and like you said very recently Gamma talked about their joint ambition to surpass The Beatles. They didn't just make that statement without Mariah's approval. Which means she is as chart hungry as the lambs are.

The problem with every lamb - HFIA charts (111,789)

Fans care about the charts because Mariah cares about the charts. She has marketed herself as the "biggest selling female recording artist in US history" since the early 2000s. The Forbes magazine article about her partnership with Gamma explicitly stated she and the team were interested in surpassing The Beatles' record for most #1 singles in United States history. She wouldn't launch into festive overdrive every year to notch more weeks at #1 for AIWFCIY if she didn't care about charts.
Mariah has always been willful, ambitious and tenacious; and it is one of the things I have always admired about her. I don't expect a number one record every single time, but I definitely want Mariah to succeed. I love her ambition and the fact that she is a boss lady in a way that Beyonce and Taylor Swift can only dream about.
