Nostalgia part 2 (51,452) by R&B Junkie from Poland
First song I've heard from MC was Without You, I was 7 then, my cousin would play the song repeatedly when we were on winter holiday. Then, in 1995, my dad brought Daydream home-recorded cassette from his job mate (I managed to buy the original CD 8 years later). Fantasy, OSW, Forever and Melt Away were my favorite songs at that time. Then I forgot about Mariah. And in 1999 I fell in love with Heartbreaker. Damn, this was superfantastic feeling to see the video on MTV. And again, I forgot. In the beginning of 2000 I collected money for some Jay-Z album, but in the store there was none of his work, but suddenly I saw #1's and I had to have it. I love the songs, my cousin (a die-hard hip-hop fan loved Fantasy the remix). I bought Rainbow around one month later and then all the stuff started. I remember just like it was yesterday, buying Glitter one day before the 9/11, searching for casette version of Charmbracelet (the last MC album to be released in this format in Poland). If the story has not bored you to death yet, I can tell you that I also sacrificed the moment I brought home the Butterfly album, it was spring of 2003, a week before Easter, and all the joy that goes with spring was just put in this masterpiece album. I hope you enjoyed my story. All the missing albums I bought in 3-pack box in 2003. I love them all.

Nostalgia (51,451) by Steve from USA
I became a Mariah fan almost from the very beginning. My first memory of her is the Someday video being on MTV. I think I was like 12. I was like "Who is this? She's good." Then she hit the whistle note at the end and I stopped doing whatever I'd been doing because I was in total shock. I was hooked from that point on. Like many other fans my age, the first thing I did was steal my parents' cassette of the debut, which I listened to ad nauseous. Same with Emotions. I actually recall going to the record store (yes kids that was a thing) with my mom to buy Emotions, and playing it in the car on the way home. A few years later, during the Music Box era, my parents split up, and my dad got a new, very unkind, girlfriend (they are married now and she still sucks). I had an extremely unpleasant first meeting with her, and I locked myself in my room, and lay in the dark listening to a mix tape I had made of the first 3 albums. I just kept getting up to flip the tape. If there was any question about life long fan-dom before that, it was history. Mariah music definitely helped me through that moment in my life. No song in particular, all of them.

For the nostalgia (51,450) by Adam from Usa
I feel like I have always been listening to Mariah. Her self titled debut was one of my very first CDs. I was in the car with my mom and heard Vision Of Love for the first time and it awakened something inside me. Like I was meant to be hearing it. Strange I know but from that moment I made my mom take me to the mall to buy the cd. There was a lot of flack I took from her at the time but that didn't deter me. MTV Unplugged was the first time I saw Mariah on tv and I remember thinking how can a person make such beautiful sounds like that it couldn't be real. I still have those feelings today when I wee watch performances. I used to set my boom box as an alarm to wake me up and the chosen song was always One Sweet Day. Sounds morbid but the music always put me in such a calm mood. When the first Christmas album was released I played it so much that my brother snuck into my room and took a lighter to it so it couldn't be played. I cried and cried until my dad made my brother purchase a new one. I still have the original copies of all her albums and I treat them as gold. I like many of you have been silent on this board. I never really speak up and voice my opinions about gossip but I love reading all of yours. Thank you all for being apart of such a unique community of lambs. More to come.

Following the nostalgia stories (51,449) by May from Denmark
Beautiful to read some of these stories. Mine goes back to when the "Simpsons" were the hype and I remember telling my parents I would love a Bart Simpson doll as birthday present. I did get him and also the Simpsons music album and my mom got for herself the Mariah Carey debut album. I remember my mom was super happy and I asked her "Who is this one? Nobody knows her." Lol and I kept doing my interpretations of funny Bart phrases that all kids knew. Then I heard at school one song by Mariah Carey and I was curious, went home and I decided to hear my mom's "old people's music" haha and there I was hooked with "Prisoner", I loved Mariah doing her rapping part (those days rap/hip hop was everywhere). Since then her music accompanied me through my worst moments which I will keep private, went through very bad stuff but her music always kept me up, overall the "never give up" and "keep on dreaming" phrases, have always lift me up when I needed. My husband pokes fun at me sometimes because I like MC a lot, when I moved with him and I had to leave all my belongings in my born-country the first things he gifted me were MC albums. I recall when we used to live apart he once told me around Christmas time "that Mariah Carey is on the radio singing something about missing (Miss You Most was the song) and is making me sad because it reminds me of you". Aww, Mariah has been there even in that moment spontanously lol. I love her forever.

For Kate and the nostalgia (51,448) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
First time a voice ever stopped me dead in my tracks was Vision Of Love. I was 9 or 10 years old and home alone watching videos on MTV or Super Channel. VOL came on and I literally walked up to the TV screen because I wanted to be as close to the source of that angelic voice as possessible. I never heard anyone use their voice like that and it blew my mind. We moved to another city shortly after that and again I saw her on TV and I had another moment. But I was a kid who basically listened to whatever my family members bought. I guess the official house diva was Whitney Houston so maybe that's why Mariah had to be snuck in for me to discover. Anyway, I was 12 and Dreamlover came out with those ethereal high notes. Music Box: that record was being played everywhere on TV and radio and for the first time I heard her unusual name be spoken out loud. Subsequently obsessed over MB when my sister borrowed it from her friend and I was in awe. From that moment I could distinguish her tone in a sea of cacophony. Unsurprisingly Daydream ended up being the first CD I ever bought with my own money. You wanna know what's funny? I didn't realise Mariah was the same singer as the VOL girl until we had internet access in JHS and the first extra curricular thing I ever searched was Mariah Carey in Altavista (90's Google). I was an amusement unto myself and started researching everything about her. Anyone who knew me even in passing associated me with singing and Mariah Carey. True story.

I really want to hear the song without an echo or the audio tag "exclusive". Does anyone know where it could be hiding?

Vegas (51,446) by 123 from USA
So I"m going July 13th. I found tickets at a fair price and a nice package that includes hotel and air travel. If anyone is going that weekend please let me know. It would be nice to meet some fans on the board and exchange our thoughts on the show.

Negative Nick comments / Mariah does no wrong (51,445) by 123 from USA
Why is everyone painting Mariah to be some helpless victim and Nick to be this mastermind manipulator who got over on her? Are we really believing this? This is not 18 year old Mariah who was taken advantage of by a 40 something president of a record company. This was a 38 year old, highly intelligent individual who has already survived a divorce and temporary career sabotage from the man that hired the "secret people" following her who she mentioned in the 99 interview that was posted not too long ago. Why would she jump into marrying someone 6 weeks after meeting him? If he truly is releasing a tell all or trying to get money out of her then, yes, he is a slimeball. But lets not jump to conclusions on some gossip column. I would hope that she makes smarter choices regarding getting involved with someone right away or even marriage. You get what you pay for and it's her fault she didn't research what she was buying. He has dated everyone and was engaged multiple times and left someone else for her. The D must be that good, but that's a move a young inexperienced girl makes. Damizza already wrote a whole chapter about her and put some business out there. Didn't she learn from that? I'm one for defending our girl when she is wronged i.e. Tommy, Def Jam, Walter, haters, but she isn't always completely innocent either in every situation.

Important / Vegas, career future (51,444) by Nathan from USA
Let's be clear, unfortunately Mariah's recent performances have been plagued with negative press. Plus, she's still not back to her AI look and confidence with Vegas leading up. I'll put it this way. Ticket sales are okay-ish. Expensive seats are doing well, middle tiers are proving more difficult. Sadly, she isn't doing any real live promo showing off her pipes, so honestly, Vegas will initially sell out at 60-70% capacity. If she proves herself and does well, they can quickly increase and do well. If she pull any of that nonsense from the Chanteuse Show, the Vegas run and her career are finished.

Me and Mariah go back like... (51,443) by Todd from Melbourne, Australia
Well I was a child of 1982. Getting old. But I remember hearing Mariah's music on the radio, and being aware of it, but not crazy about it. At the time I was determined to like stuff like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. My mum bought Music Box, and used to play it everytime we were in the car. It drove me nuts. The first song of Mariahs that I really loved was All I Want For Christmas. Then Fantasy, and One Sweet Day. To this day I'm still not a fan of ABMB, but I bought Daydream anyway. Daydream and Alanis's Jagged little Pill were all I listened too for a good year. Then Butterfly came out and I was hooked. And ever since, I've bought every album and been to every concert.

Nostalgia (51,442) by B from USA
Kate, welcome to the messageboard and thanks for lightening the mood. When Loverboy came out I was sixteen dating a twenty-four year, who would buy me gifts like a sugar daddy. When We Belong Together came out I had just broken up with my boyfriend. When Don't Forget About Us came out my ex told me that his girlfriend would call him and play it for him so I called and played/sang it to him, because we were each others first loves. When Obsessed came out I was being stalked by some loser that was literally obsessed with me. When Touch My Body came out it helped me seduce a man. A couple of months before the release of #Beautiful, before the title and teaser had even been revealed, a guy told me I was kind of beautiful. Mariah's song/singles have coincided with events in my life perfectly. I'm not making any of this up. Always Be My Baby: when the twenty-four year old broke up with me I was in my bedroom listening to ABMB and my first love came in and when I told him what had happened, he kissed me and we made love and years later he was at my brothers and he was going through his ringtones and he stopped at ABMB and let it play. I hope this gets posted in its entirety.

Kate / nostalgia (51,441) by Orkun from The Netherlands
Very nice topic. I have that feeling with Friends (tv show) and Mariah. I was a kid when she came out and every hour, VOL would be on the radio and I actually hated it. Then came " Love Takes Time". I was sold. To me, her first album is my all time favorite, ever.

Empire (51,440) by B from USA
I think the reports that Mariah is desperate to make an appearance on Empire are false. I think some of these media outlets are taking Courtney Love's comments about channeling her inner Mariah for her character as Mariah wanting to be on the show. The facts in these articles are inaccurate. Yes, Mariah was ridiculed for Glitter. However, Mariah's acting in Wisegirls, Tennessee, Precious, and The Butler were/was praised by critics. She even won an award for acting for her performance in Precious. I hate articles and blogs that get the facts wrong or have no clue what their typing (writing) when it comes to Mariah Carey.

MIAMTEC (51,438) by B from USA
#Beautiful peaked at 15 on Billboard's Hot 100 and at 3 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. It was also certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Her thirteenth single to be certified Platinum. That is proof that Mariah Carey is still relevant and can easily redeem herself. During the opening night of Mariah's The Elusive Chanteuse Show she was clearly sick but the media and some fans claimed her voice was and is shot. Her voice is fragile but when rested and rehearsed she can still deliver live vocally. Mariah Carey knows what is at stake with her upcoming single, album, and residency. She's the last diva standing for a reason. She's more than her voice, she's a musical genius. She has written countless songs that are considered classics and she has two back to back Songs of the Decade: One Sweet Day and We Belong Together.

More nostalgia (51,437) by Bill from the UK
So it's autumn 1994. It's the October half term holiday and I'm "cat sitting" for my aunt with my nan. The only thing I pack is my Walkman and Mariah tapes. At this point I have managed to buy through pocket money both Emotions and the Unplugged album on cassette and have been playing them non stop, as well as buying the AYNAF single. Even though both AYNAF and Music Box were on the album, I wanted to buy the single because I loved the cover (and remember being surprised at her straightened hair lol). Each time I was in town, I used to go into the record shops and hold and stare at the debut album and try to remember its track listing. As a reward for cat sitting, my mum bought me the debut album. I remember her calling me whilst at my aunt's to check she had the right one. I could not wait to get home and listen to it. When I did, to my disappointment, it played the Emotions album, it was a faulty cassette. We took it back that weekend (if only I had the foresight to hang on it to as a collector's item. ) and I finally got to hear the album when it was replaced. It was agony having the lyrics there but no songs haha. Once home I sat in the back room of my house and played the debut album to myself, reading the lyrics and just loving the gold background the track listing had, thinking it was so beautiful. Got a couple more stories to share with you all, I love reading everyone's stories.

Beautiful acoustic (51,436) by MC1989 from Spain
Jon thanks for posting it. It's amazing, I think I like it even more than the original version. I really believe Beautiful is Mariah's best commercial song since We Belong Together. I share your thoughts about that she should do an unplugged concert with acoustic renditions of her songs (old and current ones). Everytime she gives a little taste of that (like the impro performance for the fans at J. Fallon) she sounds great.

Nostalgia (51,435) by MC1989 from Spain
I was born in 1989 and my earliest Mariah memory is the Emotions LP which was in the living room (by the way it's so hard to find vinyls from Mariah, the ones I have I had to buy them via internet, second hand vinyls). I first heard about her during 1995-96 with the big success of Daydream. I was 6/7 and I remember listening to Open Arms on the radio during the Spice Girls boom lol. My favourite album is the first one. Though I bought it when I was a teenager, it brings me a lot of memories and it still is my favourite with Daydream, Butterfly and The Emancipation Of Mimi.

Subconscious uncoupling (51,433) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
My bullshit detector is flawless. Just because Mariah is willingly putting her children's wellbeing ahead of her pride so they won't have to go through all of the turmoil she went through in her own parents divorce doesn't mean Thirsty is husband/daddy of the year. Everything he says is vetted by a publicist and let him tell it you'd think the divorce was the greatest thing that ever happened. If things are so damn great then why the hell is he knowingly breaking up his precious family? He's going overboard with faking it big time, because Mariah's being the bigger person by consciously making dysfunction functional and that's why I love her. If she had any good things to say about him she would have already said it. What's that expression: If you don't have anything good to say, then say nothing at all. Food for thought. Prediction: To no one's surprise, Mariah and Thirsty will be seen celebrating the twins' birthday anniversary together. Bittersweet, thy name is April 30th.

Kate / nostalgia (51,432) by Bill from the UK
I was born in the early 80s so I got to live through Mariah's career as it was taking off in Europe, it's what is so great about being a 90s kid. I remember I first saw her on the MTV chart countdown my older brother used to watch. I was 9, almost 10, when I walked into the room and was standing there dumbfounded at this beautiful woman running around a field singing about her dream lover. Literally frozen to the spot as I tried to take in her looks and her voice and the song. Something clicked in me then and I just knew she was special and would be an important part of my life. When Without You was released, I was a fan. The cassette single was the first Mariah item I ever bought (I wanted to buy the singles of Hero and Dreamlover but I had no pocket money left). I loved that sepia cover and loved Never Forget You as much as Without You. I then bought Music Box and used to listen to it in bed on my Walkman after lights out, learning the lyrics, gazing at her other album covers that were in the inlay and wanting to hear them so badly lol. I've got more stories which I will post later. Great topic.

Nostalgia (51,431) by David from Australia
I love reading all your stories. I was born in 1992 so I missed early Mariah. The first time I remember a Mariah album in my life was in 1998 when my dad bought a new stereo and with it came a bunch of cd's including Butterfly and #1's. I never listened to Butterfly (which is my fave album now haha) but I loved #1's. I played the hell out of Fantasy remix and Sweetheart. I still remember sitting in the kitchen so many times listening to the cd while everyone else was trying to watch tv in the other room. Still have the radio I used to play it on. No digital devices then so I carried that radio and cd everywhere I went haha. Then in 1999 my sister bought the Rainbow cassette and being young, I left the cassette on the wet floor of my grandparents' shed and when my sister came back for it, the cassette and packaging was completely damaged. She was so angry at me haha. My last memory when I was only a casual fan was buying the Loverboy single and it had a sticker for the forthcoming Glitter album. I didn't become a lamb until much later though, but they're fond memories to look back on.

Nostalgia (51,430) by Skip from United States
Interesting question, Kate. For me, I was in grade school when Mariah debuted, so I have memories tied to all of her releases. I don't think nostalgia plays into my feelings for the albums now, except maybe for "Music Box" - it always takes me back to high school. There's something about the melancholy in that album I connected to at the time and, while I don't feel that way now, it was definitely my "teen angst" album. The real nostalgia comes from remembering hearing Mariah constantly on the radio. I remember when the DJ on KIIS-FM here in Los Angeles premiered "Emotions" and liked it so much that he played it twice in a row. I've never heard a DJ do that, before or since. I remember when radio couldn't wait for new singles, so they played "Prisoner", "Now That I Know", and started spinning "Without You" long before "Hero" had even peaked. And I certainly remember the Daydream era, since that was the absolute pinnacle of her career. The constant airplay for the three commercial singles plus "Forever", not to mention the times I heard "Open Arms" played when it wasn't even a single here in America. Point is, that's the nostalgia for me. I haven't seen another artist have that much constant success with albums and singles since then. They were them good ol' days.

Addicted (51,429) by Dove from USA
Thanks guys, for the warm welcome back. I guess I am addicted. I'm glad I never started smoking because quitting stuff you like is tough. I'm going to try to moderate myself, though, because I was coming on here first thing when I woke up, during breaks and lunch at work, and at night before I went to sleep. Even more on the days I didn't work. It feels good to feel appreciated, so thanks. I appreciate everyone here, even the ones I don't agree with, because you make me see things from a different POV.

Nostalgia (51,426) by Reuben Walton from United States
I was born 1/13/1991. I wasn't around for Mariah Carey. I don't remember Emotions. I'm not sure if I remember Music Box, but Dreamlover was among the songs I always heard on the radio when I was a little bit older. I think maybe I had heard AIWFCIY throughout the 1990s, but I don't remember when it was released. I was 4 when Daydream was released, and I don't know if I remember when it was released but very often I would hear Fantasy on the radio when I was a little bit older. I do have a memory of riding in the car with either my mom or dad and hearing the DJ/announcer on the radio say something like "Mariah Carey's new album is called Butterfly, coming out soon", they might've been introducing Honey or something. I'm pretty sure that was in 1997. It could've been before or after they played a song from Daydream, and then they were then plugging her upcoming album. I think it was summer 1997. I do remember hearing Honey, at least the high notes at the end "I need it, need it" are a distinct memory of mine. As a kid I think that Dreamlover/Fantasy/Honey may have blended into each other as one general vibe memory of being a 1990s kid. I loved My All when it came out as a single (I wasn't listening to her albums at this point yet), that minor key guitar opening, plus the video reminded me of Titanic I think (the movie being a big childhood obsession of mine), because her lying on the back of the boat reminded me of Rose in the end or something. That and the MHWGO video. I loved My All. MC lying on the boat reminded me of Titanic I think, the whole dark sky with water thing, much like Céline Dion's video for "My Heart Will Go On". I also thought she was saying "'cause I'm drowning you in a warm pool/whirl pool, without you by my side". I had swimming lessons and couldn't swim and it scared me to see the blurry water surface above me and putting my head underwater scared me in general. My sister used to play #1s all the time when it came out. I remember hearing Emotions/VOL as like brand new songs. I thought Emotions was like a really old song just because the production was so 80s. I loved WYB, especially Whitney Houston's vocalizations towards the end. Heartbreaker was probably something that sort of blended into the general uptempo type song thing for me, but I think I liked it. My sister really liked TGIFY and so did I.

Celeb dirty laundry (51,425) by Giselle #1 Mariah Critic from USA
Who runs that site? A bunch of 16 year old school girls? First off Mariah only had 1 role which was panned: "Glitter". So I don't know what in the world are they talking about. Lee Daniels and cast are the ones who want Mariah on the show. She doesn't have to try and get on. All she has to do is "Lee, dahling. Come over for a splash." Lol if she wants on it's like that.
