Remaining Vegas shows (108,264)

The Rainbow Mariah was fun. The Hearbreaker video was on heavy rotation every day. There were really so many things which a fan could enjoy. The Glitter album was released before 9/11/01 in Germany. I can't remember why. But I remember buying the single Loverboy too. It was always a highlight to buy a Mariah CD on its release day. The youngsters of today have no clue how exciting it was. To wait until a release date, drive to the city at a media market and buy the "new" CD.

I became a lamb during that period. My first Mariah album was "Rainbow", and I absolutely loved all of the MTV specials. I remember going out to Best Buy and Sam Goody in middle school to buy the "Loverboy" single and "Glitter" album. I think I went out to Best Buy on 9/11/01 to buy the "Glitter" album because we were released from school early that day.

Branding/brand deals (108,263)

The 2016 M·A·C Mariah Carey Collection is arguably one of the most successful brand collaborations she's done during her later career. Something like that is the way to go.

Branding/brand deals (108,255)
by Norman from USA

To piggyback on the RA, Randy, and Will discussion: Does anyone have any brands they think would be a realistic fit for Mariah to pursue? She doesn't have a proven track record with anything per se, but I don't think it means there isn't anything out there for her.
Also, I'm not sure what her personal branding is anymore. She's being herself which is fantastic, but it's still a business and there should be something to point to outside of Christmas. Staying "booked and busy" is obviously every artist wishes to have, but I would wager something more elevated is needed for her caliber celebrity. More elevated but still accessible, you know?
I think Randy is right about the make-up and perfume routes being saturated. And as much as I like the Black Irish, no one goes out on the town drinking that like vodka and tequila.
I initially thought of shoes, but then remembered the stint on HSN with the clothing and shoes. I'd suggest a brand deal over her own line. Maybe a Louboutin or Jimmy Choo heel named after her, something she wears in a high concept music video (remember those? I'm aging myself). Something like that but fresher and less on the nose than what I just described.
Thoughts? Hey, what about golf clubs for laughs?

MC should do some type of car or truck commercial like Laney Wilson. I love her song 4x4 even more now because of the truck ad.

"The 1997-2001 period of Mariah's career is one of her most fascinating." Absolutely. There was so much going on. I was a teen back then and witnessed that time. It was a very special time. (Personally as well.) I also loved all her MTV documentaries and specials. Mariah was everywhere. Touring, on TV and radio. Then came 9/11 and and the world had changed. I still miss the 90ies.

I need a 25th anniversary deluxe version of "Glitter" with Mariah's recording of the "Lillie's Blues" song from the beginning scene of the film.
I also need full remix EPs on streaming for "Loverboy", "Never Too Far", "Never Too Far/Hero Medley", "Don't Stop (Funkin' for Jamaica)", and whatever else Mariah is holding back from the Glitter era. She worked on that project from 1997-2001. There's got to be more than just the original "Loverboy" and the cover of "Out Here On My Own". Weren't there a couple of other song titles that came up during that era - "Every Time", "Anything Can Happen", "The Flow", etc.
I'd also love a high quality release of that Fox Family documentary did on the making of "Glitter" - I still love watching it on YouTube. I also recall a really great podcast episode from "The Mariah Report" where the hosts dive deep into how different the original concept for "Glitter" was before it was filmed and when it was known as "All That Glitters".
The 1997-2001 period of Mariah's career is one of her most fascinating and prolific periods. She was working on so many different things (three albums, one compilation, multiple films, two tours) and she finally got her independence from Tommy. What a magical time period. And she looked gorgeous too, though the 2001 era platinum blonde hairstyle wasn't my favorite.

The effects of a different style of singing (108,252)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
I was watching Ledisi perform on the NAACP awards show. One thing you can say about Ledisi is that the way [she] sings now is how she has always sang. She has never incorporated any type of acrobatics or crazy riffs or runs in her singing style. So, I am wondering what made MC start singing in that breathy style of singing in 1997. Although it may have added some depth to a specific song, I feel it may have been too much for her young voice in the late 1990s. MC's voice was still young and may not have been strong enough at that time to sing in that breathy style and sing in her head voice too in the same song.

I think I understand what you mean Will, but please no more perfumes or cosmetics from Mariah. I need new music. A jazz album, a duets album, Rarities part 2, the hidden grunge album. A singer should focus on music. If the inspiration is gone, then Mariah could take a longer break. One more album would be nice. Caution shouldn't be the last.

The thing is, is that we've seen Mariah do those things in the past, and then lost interest in them. She never has had any project outside of music last more than a year, and then it goes away. To me is speaks to another point that was raised that she isn't the best business woman when it comes to it, and misses out on opportunities to actually make something of a brand. Look at Rihanna with her cosmetics line or Beyonce with her perfumes. Mariah does it for a moment and then moves on when something else catches her fancy.

You have the impressive talent of pulling facts and half truths out of your behind like there's no tomorrow. Mariah doesn't have to do anything she doesn't want to. She learned her lesson very well in the '90s. Her agreement with Live Nation isn't some ironclad obligation forcing her to be on tour nonstop as if she were a slave.
This isn't like a traditional record deal where artists get cash advances they have to pay back. Even if it were structured that way, she still has to consent to whatever is booked. Live Nation doesn't own Mariah, she has full control over her schedule and can take a break whenever she wants without issue.
So, stop with the "Me I'm Mariah, a poor damsel in distress" narrative. Mariah has more control over her career now than ever before, so no, she's not forced to be there, she chooses to be there. Once she agrees and signs the contract, she is contractually obligated to fulfill the terms, including any concerts or tours outlined in the agreement.

She can work on all the new music she likes, but it costs money, and right now whatever album she is working on will not be generating any meaningful profit for a record company to put any money behind or support it. So, she either is paying for it herself, which is why it's taking so long and why she's continually touring to get income in the meantime, or she's not finding a record company big enough to give her the attention she wants for it. She isn't capable of doing it a la Prince and just releasing it whenever she wants because she still doesn't have the right connections or business know how on how to do it.

So in addition to Brighton Pride in August she will be doing a show in Brazil in September. Let's hope she can work on some new music before that. I hope that in the time she has until August she can get some solid work done.
Is anybody really excited about the biopic she badly wants to do? It could be interesting, especially since she won't be acting in it but I hope she focuses on new music first.

MC needs something else to enhance her career instead of perfoming. I would love to see her partner with a cosmetics or clothing company using an original song sung by another artist. I would even be elated if she took some time off from performing for 1 year. Plus, Beyond the Gates on CBS is going to keep me glued to the TV with this hot new daytime soap opera cast. I have never seem a more attractive and talented cast on new TV program. I can't wait until Monday.

I've noticed in the UK that more Mariah songs are being used in TV ads, such as Just Eat/Deliveroo (using Fantasy) and the new Bridget Jones trailer had her whistle note from the Big Energy remix. The radio station Magic has always played Mariah but lately they've been playing her more and more I've noticed as well. From almost never licensing her songs out for film or ads, there's been a noticeable increase lately - another venue for her to generate an income?

I don't think MC is hurting for money, but we all know her net worth has taken a 20 percent hit during the past 6 years without a new album and a huge world tour. I forgot to mention this in my last post that I would love to see MC on an ABC or NBC comedy show episode next fall season. I did enjoy MC in Wisegirls as Raychel.

I didn't know she signed with Live Nation. What bothers me about that is she's never been much of a performer. Even when she had the voice. I get record companies aren't handing out piles of cash to sign her but what about her past royalties? They're not enough to keep her afloat? I remember when she and Nick filed for divorce and some of the financials leaked. It surprised me that MC only made $4 million one year. For me, that would set me for retirement. But for her, the overhead, dahing. Trey Lorenz's sparkly blazer dry cleaning bills, Mary Ann Tatum's vocal coach studio rent, Evian with gold flakes for the dogs, Kristopher Buckle's contouring techniques copyright use, the squire who holds her iPhone, the squire who holds her Android, the rhinestone encrusted Suburban she is carried around in. She needs to seriously scale it back or sell her catalogue in one of those ridiculous publishing deals, if she plans to live at her present level. Maybe she should've married Packer. I kid. I kid.

Did you all forget? She does have to be there and keep doing shows. She signed a touring deal with Live Nation at the end of 2017. Her new residency had already begun that year, so they missed out on that and 2017's Christmas season too. Stella was out and Jay's team moved in. Live Nation only had her half the time because the residency took up so much time. It's why she needed an album out in 2018, so they could schedule her next year. Right after the AMA's in the pink dress LN sent her to Asia for a 1 month greatest hits tour before sending her back to the US to finish promoting her album and then doing Christmas shows before having her go on tour for Caution. She still had her residency and then the 25th anniversary of Christmas. Mariah was working around the clock which is why she fired Jay's management team for a smaller manager that would give her more breaks and smaller venues. Probably less commission too. Live Nation was looking forward to 2020 since all her old contracts would be up and 100% of her touring belonged to them, but that didn't happen due to the pandemic. It's why they're working her so hard now.

I just don't see the fire. Mariah has been like this off and on since Stella. It would scare me more if she moved around the stage, had banter and wasn't singing along to her own voice in the background. I 100% get she doesn't want to be there but that's common knowledge and people will still go see her because she's an icon. My concern is it does reek of financial trouble and not necessarily, I love to perform so much I don't know when to bow out gracefully. Mariah is fine. She is gigging to make sure she can keep Kristopher Buckle, Mary Ann Tatum, Trey Lorenz, Daniel Moore, the umbrella holder, the rental in LA, the G5, the upkeep on the NYC pad and the house in the Bahamas taken care of. I don't see Whitney Houston's decline. I see more of a Joan Crawford, Judy Garland thing here. "I'm Mariah, dahling. I can't be broke."

Agreed Randy. If you look at the Brazil concert videos, she was definitely a whole lot more invested and present than the Vegas residency ones. If she doesn't have more music for now she can focus on her biopic (with the right team). Let's hope she works on getting herself back together now with this break.

The clothing and perfuming offerings are bad ideas RA. The market is saturated. But you are definitely onto something with the writing and producing for other artists as an artist. Mariah can write circles around Kandi Burruss, Montell Jordan and Neyo. Look what they've done for others. And she could definitely write as well as those I consider close to her league Lauryn Hill, R Kelly, Babyface and Kanye. Again, look at what they've done for others. She could've written for Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Harry Styles or any other new artists that sell a lot of records and she could do a live festival once a year.
