Re: Oh for fx sakes (84,390) (84,401) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Yes, I just can't understand it. It makes no sense. Lol. Effing Merry Christmas. Maybe we'll get a remix with it. Seriously, someone who is proud of the songwriting like "our" MC (and I always loved her songwriting) should be able to write something more mature.

A bit disgusted (84,399) by Tyler from USA
I wasn't going to say anything but some of these comments are disgusting. I'm not a fan of this as a lead single but bringing up alcoholism, being bi-polar, corrupted by fame, addiction as the source is disgusting and pathetic. Also, this outrageous idea of how Tommy pushed her musically and painting him as this savior is ridiculous. Her music from 1990-1996 all sounded the same and he would of made sure she didn't escape from that formula. Do you realize she finally grew as an artist after leaving him? Lastly, Roc Nation and Epic both approved the song. I'm pretty sure they told her we need a WBT classic Mariah record to regain the public interest for this re-introduction. As a new client of Roc Nation they aren't going to take any chances. Wait until the full album before the hatred tantrums.

Re: Oh for fx sakes (84,390) (84,398) by Bobby A from United States
I am surprised that no one has mentioned that it was Walter A who kept Mariah reaching into her box of lyrical greatness and depth to give us all the brilliant songs during her reign in the 1990s. They just collaborated so well and effortlessly on some of the greatest pop ballads and mid tempos from the 1990s. And she just doesn't realized fully how those songs touch so many people's lives because of their deep sometime introspective lyrics. If I am mad at Mariah for anything, it is that she has refused to collaborate with Walter A after all of these years have passed. Let it go MC to make you shine again. I pray one day that she forgives him to collaborate with him again. MC15 could use about three Walter A songs. I am going to tweet her now asking her to reconsider Walter A. again. I hope everybody tweets her today pleading with her to call up Walter A.

Meanwhile back at the ranch... (84,397) by Andrew from UK
I'm playing Merry Christmas and dancing around the house. Because, that's why. God rest ye merry, gentlemen. And ladies.

Re: A message for Adam (84,343) (84,396) by Andrew from UK
Your message is nonsense. I don't write and record music but that doesn't mean I can't critique it. I do not design and make clothes but I feel at liberty to choose what looks good and what doesn't. I do not write plays but I can tell you that Iago is a gripping character and The Tempest is quite boring. I do not cook that well but I can tell a chef when he's over salted the food or when the steak was cooked perfectly. I am not an expert on Ancient Greece but I can tell you what it's like to stand in front of the awesome Elgin Marbles. Yes, I do not write or record music, but I feel confident in my knowledge and experience, and my unflinching honesty, to post that Mariah has recorded another carbon copy of many songs she's recorded before and doubled the whammy by releasing it as the long-awaited first single from an album now, exhaustingly, 4 years in the waiting. It's a disappointment, so just admit it, you prize-winning turnip. And yes, I will cross my fingers that the album itself is something new and exciting for her sake, because pushing out the same old same-old whilst adding expletives into the mix is not good enough to keep many people interested anymore. And yes, including me. Fingers crossed.

Listening party 10/3 (84,395) by Ethan from United States
I wonder if any of us here was invited/went to the listening party. It doesn't look like any of them is on this forum. Lol. I've seen several IG posts and the comments were general: the album is lit or on fire (or several songs that played at the gathering). On the other hand, I agree that there's a disconnect with "critics" and "lambs". With You has been getting positive reviews from NPR, Rolling Stone, Billboard, etc. It'd be great to hear a striped down version of it at the AMAs. And please don't forget Mariah for the Aretha tribute, which I doubt "I don't know her" was asked to be a part of.

Recent listening party attendees are saying the record is "legit", but sworn to secrecy in revealing any actual details. I don't know what she's saving up her jewel encrusted sleeve though.

AMA performance of With You (84,392) by T from USA
If she just does the standard standing at the mic this performance will fall flat. I'm thinking of her Billboard performance of Infinity or recent iHeart performance. I honestly think a stripped down performance where the spotlight is just on her ala MTV stripped or something John Legend would do will really elevate the song.

Re: Oh for fx sakes (84,390) (84,391) by T from USA
Maybe because of the A/C leanings? Or maybe because she wasn't following radio trends at the very beginning? Now it's interesting because she's got one toe dipped in "not following any trends" and at the same time the other toe is dipped in the "what's going on at radio right now with Ella Mai". I wonder what an album would sound like if she did mature music coming from a 48 year old who really doesn't care about what's in anymore? But that's not Mariah is it?

Oh for fx sakes (84,390) by 90sMariah from SG
It's funny how then 18yo Mariah was able to write mature, profound and poetic lyrics in VOL, LTT, Vanishing while her now 48yo self have settled with phrases like "I fks with ya" and "GTFO" in her songs. She is taking her "eternally 12" mantra was too seriously.

With You or Without You (84,389) by Edward from USA
"With You" is a nice filler song, that's about it. It definitely seems Mariah has lost her muse though. 90's Mariah seemed to have more depth and mature lyrics than this Mariah. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button comes to mind, Mariah when young seemed to have an old soul and her music reflected that, but now that she's older, her soul has gotten more juvenile, so weird. I like "With You", but single material It. Is. Not. What's next with her aggressive lyrics, a future Christmas song called "Merry Effing Christmas"? After all Virgin Mary had to give birth to Jesus, maybe she cursed while going through labor like some women do out of pain, who knows. I'm still looking forward to the new album though.

MC 15 (84,388) by B from USA
According to several sites Mariah and Drake collaborated on a song for her new album. I'm loving With You but I wonder why they chose it over the Drake feature?

Mariah Carey's best awards show performances (84,386) by B from USA
Billboard ranked Mariah's best award show performances. Several of my favorites made the list. Mariah's performance of If Only You Knew/Somewhere Over The Rainbow at the 1998 Essence Awards, Vision of Love at the 1991 Grammy's, We Belong Together/Fly Like A Bird at the 2006 Grammy's, and Emotions at the 1991 VMA's.

Vulgariah or... Bianca? She should have released an entire album as Bianca. Hilarious. But more fitting.

With You (84,382) by Carlos from Brazil
I think the music landscape of these days are not about raw talent and vocals anymore. If we take a look in today's chart it's more about being edgy and current with a strong social media impact. Take a look at today's divas and you will find nothing but lack of real vocalists. Halsey, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Ella Mai (which I think is what Mariah is mostly sounding like) are talented but they don't need all those melismatic runs. I think people are not interested in that anymore. Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson almost went unnoticed with their albums. Even Ariana who is a great singer has yet to have a number one record and let's be honest, she's way weaker than Mariah. I think "With You" is about being current. No exagerated vocals and a minimalistic beat just like Ella's singles. If Mariah is holding herself or if it's because she couldn't hit those notes from the past she could only benefit from all of this.

Re: With You (84,368) (84,381) by MusicfanJ from Germany
What do the members on here think about the lyrics honestly? I would enjoy it more without the alcohol references again. (I think Deedre already mentioned it.) And without the f.. again. I hope on the new album there is a song without those words. The language outside is "aggressive" enough, I would prefer lyrics more deeply by Mariah. With deeply I mean more poetic and less "cool". But I had to laugh about the word "Vulgariah" posted on here.

Re: A message for Adam (84,331) (84,380) by May from Denmark
I remember Kelly said after she left people were gonna realize how things really are and the tricks, that you can only fool people for so long. I thought she was being a bitch, later with the time I was more inclined to think that there might have been a fair amount of manufacturing. Perhaps not at the get go, that was all raw Mariah, but maybe later. There's no denial Mariah loved the attention, she always did, was too obvious, she loves the glitz, the glam, the money. She complained a lot about Mottola but only dropped him when she was at her peak and done everything to follow the formula given. I wonder if she only writes happy easy uplifting tunes since E=MC2 or ballads that have to do with her relationships because there's no more actual struggle like poverty to write something like Make it Happen or any more discrimination to do Outside. It's like the most emotional view she ever gave us from her acquired fame was Looking In, which is to me, one of the few truly sincere songs she has written. Mentions to alcohol and other things like that have been there, like in The Roof, but somehow it seemed fitted to the context. I don't like to assume and such. Maybe she is scared or afraid to write about her real struggles. She has only been writing what she wants for herself since E=MC2, and she said that, she is only doing music she wants to do. Meteorite and YDKWTD seemed promising, I even liked "I Don't", there was something dark about it and GTFO. I have some hopes for the new album.

Re: With You - nostalgia (84,327) (84,378) by May from Denmark
When people say the Mariah they grew up with it gives me the impression they want this woman who can throw her lungs out of her mouth, which she can't anymore. I don't think they necessarily are referring to the type of music. The woman used to have a lot of power and energy, and now at days not, also the stage presence has decreased, is that as a whole they refer to the old Mariah? Maybe more pop songs less R&B? Mariah always said she never liked doing pop, she was asked for by the bosses because it was what sold.

Here's where I'm at (84,377) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
I understand why some underwhelmed fans would be upset. Now is probably the most favorable time for the introduction of a new Mariah era since 2008 and they feel like she blew her chances by releasing a familiar-sounding slow-burner that doesn't spell "commercial", "hit" or even "radio-friendly". I'm just as surprised as anyone who wonders how Epic approved of this track to kick off the new album.
Nonetheless, I'm still happy because she is still trying to get back in the game but now on her own. Both GTFO and With You have reached the top 3 on iTunes in her own home country as well as worldwide. I know it's momentary and it's just iTunes, but (except AIWFCIY), when was the last time that Mariah charted that high on a popular music store unassisted by a rapper or a younger artist? It proves there's still some public interest in her music. How many 90s artists even do that these days? Not J.Lo., Gwen Stefani, Usher or Brandy. Not even fellow legends Janet, Mary J., Celine or Madonna. Heck, even Alicia and Christina fail to generate that type of interest for their new material these days.
I'm just appreciative that she and her team are finally working like a well-oiled machine. If the material is wrong, then so be it. As long as she promotes the hell out of it, then at least we know she's trying. Who knows what all of those efforts can do? It's less painful to watch a bad single choice fail despite great promo than a great single choice abandoned and go to waste.
Besides, With You's dated sound actually sticks out like a sore thumb against everything that's on Top 40 right now, so that may end up being an advantage. It's still within the iTunes top 10 (for a day now) as of this writing, and the video, the AMAs and the radio push haven't happened yet, so I guess we'll see.

Re: History repeats itself (84,351) (84,376) by MusicfanJ from Germany
"The only question left: is the album like GTFO or With You?" Good question, I ask myself too. I just have a feeling we may all be surprised, positive or negative we'll see. When will the album be released? Is there a difference for the date between USA and Europe?
