Alcohol (92,951)
by Dove from United States

I wish Mariah would stop drinking. I hate saying this but it seems like she's always drinking. I come from a long line of alcoholics and alcohol scares me so I don't personally drink because I've always been afraid of falling into that hole. I didn't see my dad sober until he quit drinking when I was an adult. I wish he would have quit when I was little because he's a great person but we were all scared of him when we were kids. My aunt is also an alcoholic and it started with just social drinking and partying when she was young. I told her I was concerned about her drinking and she went off on me and it was ugly. She kind of reminds me of Mariah so in my mind I imagine she would act the same way if someone told her they were concerned about her drinking. My grandpa died super young and I never in my life saw him sober. When I see MC with a glass of champagne in her hand all the time and tipsy it makes me so sad. I'm just going to pray about it. I know this post is super weird but I felt like I had to say something, even here.
There's a YouTuber I follow who is very obviously anorexic and nobody ever says anything because she's a Dr. She has half a million followers and everyone just ignores it.
I mean, I know we don't know these people in real life but we follow up with their lives and what they're doing every day so we should care, right?

New album (92,950)

If that super young Finneas can produce a whole album from his bedroom why can't Mariah do one on her own? IMO her musical ear and talent is above the level of anyone she's ever worked with. I feel like on a lot of songs her voice, melodies, harmonies, and lyrics are top notch but the songs are brought down by the cheap and generic quality of the instrumental. Or whatever it's called, since they're not exactly instruments. The backing track? I feel like she could maybe do better on her own.

I can remember during the MIAM recording sessions, MC posted this picture of her, Mike Will Made It, Jermaine Dupri, Hit-Boy, and Rodney Jerkins all in the studio together. When I saw them all together at one time, I was hoping they were working on a huge ballad together. I was so disappointed that huge ballad never happened or never made it onto MIAM. I still believe that all it would take is one huge ballad to be recorded and released for pop radio to play something new by MC. MC should get Jazmine Sullivan, Darryl "DJ" Camper, Claude Kelly, and Harmony Samuels in the studio together for her next hit ballad. Some Lambs may want an uptempo track released first for the next album, but the right smooth WBT type of ballad would take off quicker on the radio. Throw in a line from Toni Braxton's Breathe Again for a 90's throwback.

Rodney Jerkins hasn't really had solid production since, well, Brandy's brilliant Full Moon and Michael's Invincible the year before. He had a few flashes of brilliance here and there since, but post 2003 he really hasn't had a signature sound other than the "Darkchild" tags he put on many of his productions.

I say the sudden change is a confluence of many factors, with individual differences being the #1 factor. Each person's body is different and responds to stress, lifestyle changes and detrimental habits differently. She was never a marathon live singer to begin with. Several voice coaches have noted the anomaly of her being able to sing in spite of her nodules, also criticizing her singing techniques to be potentially damaging in the long run. She identifies herself as an alto when many classify her as a soprano, and that kind of misunderstanding of your own voice may lead to unhealthy singing habits. She might have sounded good, but she probably wasn't singing the best way. We also know how aging has contributed to her tone, even within her first 5 years in the business, her sound has gone from fuller, darker and even brash to lighter, more feminine and ethereal. On top of these were the external factors - her marriage was on the rocks, her arguments with the powers that be for more creative freedom on record, her slowly breaking free from control and partying harder, etc.
Write this off as another list of growing excuses for her decline, but I'm just saying that such drastic change is possible in such a short time frame as a result of the perfect storm of every reason mentioned. Some more than others, some actually out of her control.

I agree that Rodney’s production on MIAM was very dated, and lazy. Honestly Rodney Jerkins production has been stale for quite some time in my opinion.

I think Mariah was smart to avoid ballads on Caution. Ballads aren't in at the moment unless your name is Adele and even she struggled with the follow to Hello. I think her best attempt to recreate WBT was You're Mine but Mariah and Rodney Jerkins doomed the song by giving it a dated JD sound. I was shocked when I found out JD wasn't involved in the production of that song.

What is needed right now (92,941)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)

What I think MC should do right now is work on carefully constructed album that pays homage to early to mid 90’s R&B but still bring the brilliance, and freshness of Caution by using established co producers but also some new producers who are on the come up. Create between 20-30 songs and choose the strongest 12-15 as the final product. But the main goal should be a fresh take with a signature twist.

WBT (92,940)

Since we want to give so much credit to everyone else involved she has worked with these people after that, and nothing happened. Everyone complained about her formula with JD since E=MC2 up until the beginning stages of Caution. To be truthfully honest other than BWOY by MJB Jonta, and BCox have not had major success post 05-06. Caution was something fresh whether we want to acknowledge it or not but it still gave us signature MC. Which tells me she is more involved with her creative process than she at times gets credit for. Also a hit song has many factors besides how great it may be. It has to have radio and label as well besides a video and the regular formula. Honestly for me what I can respect is that MC has a signature sound all her own no matter who she works with or the genre she decides to sing. Because the radio nowadays is one boring sound with 20 different artists.

Admitting momentary self-deluluness is rare but cathartic, congrats. But you know she was partying and partying hard. I have a friend who knows Trey and partied with her many times. He says she doesn't do heavy drugs, but she loves the clouds and loves herself some booze. But let me be a delulon and say: "We don't know Mariah, we only know what she presents us. She goes to church every morning and twice on Sundays."

Haha. Well of course it didn't happen all in one night. Maybe a week, lol. In all due seriousness, I think over time, free from Tommy's control, she developed habits that were detrimental to an already tender voice.

I refuse to believe she was partying and drinking that hard to cause that much damage in that short amount of time. This is my moment of denial and delusion. I won't believe that. Lol.

This has been Mariah's issue since 2005. She is forever trying to recreate We Belong Together. But WBT is WBT. It won't ever be matched. It was of its time and was a stroke of genius. The lyrics, the delivery, the vocals, the production, it all came together at that moment. It was a success because she had never done anything like it before, and it was a sincere effort. All the replicas released since are just that. The next WBT, should there be one, will be something completely different and new.
Often imitated, never duplicated.

I think there's no doubt Mariah could create another great ballad like WBT. It's just that a "hit" doesn't depend solely on songwriting. A great video, solid marketing with radio/tv/streaming, etc., good promotion including collaboration with platforms (twitter/tiktok/youtube) are all factors in making a hit.

WBT had that JD and Manuel Seal magic, the same magic team of Always Be My Baby. But magic doesn't always happen. With You is absolutely boring IMO though and not even close.

The trailer for this movie played when hubs and I saw Star Wars. I couldn't help but rock in my chair a bit as the song played. Such a timeless song. Of course it comes from like the best album everrrrr. Daydream.

As phenomenal as We Belong Together is, I think it is not the best idea to recreate past glories especially since "lightning don't strike the same place twice" (which is ironically a Mariah lyric on a WBT clone track). Her signature songs had their moments, and every time she has followed the same formula to achieve the same results (which is ours to assume but the similarities just seem give the purpose away), the results have never really quite reached the highs of the tracks that inspired them. WBT has had so many iterations since 2005, all inferior, that I honestly have lost count.
Mariah's better off experimenting, working with new producers that she hasn't worked with in the past. That's what made Caution so great and impressive. It establishes the fact that Mariah is just as involved in the creative process as much as her collaborators are and that she truly is a co-producer. Having so many cooks in the kitchen, one would expect a scattershot, messy album. But Mariah just has her way of keeping her signature sound intact (even some critics have pointed it out) and her producers introduce just enough nuance to make things a little different yet not too much to stray too far from the public's expectations of a Mariah record.
If Mariah's gonna have another huge hit, it's likely something that isn't a retread of her past triumphs.

Well she kinda did recreate it with Don't Forget About Us, same formula and went No.1. Then kept to that format for I Stay In Love and also Angel's Cry, two songs I believe she thought where massive hits similar to WBT but unfortunately the public had moved on.

I agree with you. I think she could make another WBT by working with the right people like JD, LA Reid, etc. I think she could do really well on it vocally as well. And I believe that We Belong Together is timeless. It's written and sung beautifully. I feel like WBT had a better production and more intricate lyrics than With You, but yes, I do think With You is a good song. Honestly, I could see her make a great hit on the radio again. I didn't even expect the song Beautiful to get as much airplay as it did.

I have one question for Lambs to end the day. Why hasn't MC been able to create another WBT with JD or another high profile producer and songwriter? I believe she still has another hit ballad in her that could touch the masses, but she just has not worked really hard to recreate the WBT magic. With You came close, but it just didn't have that LA Reid and Johnta Austin fire.
