Re: Underated? (99,595) (99,599)

That's very true about the one dimensional approach by Celine. To think the same women could give us Right to Dream, Shake it Off, and Hero for example. That's kind of why I'm surprised MC doesn't write more for other artists since she came plug into such a variety of genres. I wonder why Mariah's songwriting wasn't highlighted as her biggest differentiator from the very start (against Celine or Whitney). Her voice always was pushed center stage (again with the Whitney comparisons). This was in the era that female singer-songwriters were getting so much credit and exposure (ie: Jewel, Sarah Mclachlan; Annie Lennox etc. Lilith Fair festival was massive). Some people to this day are still surprised she writes her own material, and it's only been in the last 10 years or so she's being introduced as a singer songwriter. It took them long enough to get her in the Songwriters Hall of Fame imo.

Terna, you know I love you like tea time in July. But seriously half of those are backing track assisted. Ima kill this topic before the webmaster does but frfr I wish you and I could spend a day together dissecting YouTube performances. And yes there are a few performances that she killed pre Butterfly but after 97 it was more often than not she either lipped or had an excuse. I do live for that impromptu for the fans Jimmy Fallon though. Have a great day.

I don't wish to rain on your parade but literally all those performances you listed were either pre-recorded or dubbed. The only full, genuine end to end live performances happened from debut through to Merry Christmas. All the home concert videos were dubbed and touched up in the studios, and from Daydream onwards performances started to incorporate lip syncing and pre-recorded vocals. Sorry.

You're right. Puff said as well that she recorded 50 takes of Honey so he could select the best parts for the track, and many others have said that is a "perfectionist" in the studio, which is probably a polite way of saying she's a control freak lol.

Yes I agree on the one dimensional aspect. It's probably due to Celine approaching most of her songs in the same manner. Mariah always varies her vocal approach, as well as the song itself. My Saving Grace, a gospel tinged song with great uplifting vocals, followed on from Clown, a low, slow R&B diss track. You wouldn't get that versatility on many other singers' albums.

I just feel like MC has heard all of us and she is going to deliver this year on wax. However, I feel that she will never be able replicate the recording during a live performance without lip syncing and a backing track. She has lost her stage presence and the vocals needed to deliver a great vocal performance.

Celine [sounds] just like the record but Mariah sounds better (all caps) than the record, a [feat] she's repeated countless times. What we're not gonna do is pretend Mariah can't sing a song in one take ala a live performance setting, [because] old girl is a beast in her own right. You've been listening to those "friends" of yours too long. 1. Hero (Proctor's theater 1993) 2. Emotions (MTV Unplugged 1992, cleaner sharper high notes) 3. You're Mine (BET Honors Awards 2014) 4. Fly Like a Bird (Grammy Awards 2006) 5. Through The Rain (Shinning through the rain MTV) 6. We Belong Together (MTV Movie Awards 2005, The tonight show David Letterman) 7. The Distance (Jimmy Fallon show 2018) 8. I'll Be Loving You Long Time (MTV awards Japan 2008, Teen Choice Awards) 9. Vision of Love (BET Blueprint) 2005 10. My Saving Grace (Oprah Winfrey Show 2003) 11. I Stay in Love (AMA 2008) 12. Can't Take That Away (Divas Live 2000 A tribute to Diana Ross) I'll stop here, there many more that can be added to the list.

I love Céline a lot actually, have all her English records as well, and yes as some members here have pointed out "Falling into you" is her best album. It also was my first Céline album. Lol. Having said this, I would say that she's not a versatile singer like Mariah is. The ability Carey has to dabble into multiple [genres] and come across as seasoned and believable, Céline lacks and for the most part can come across as one-dimensional.

Well it's her first album since going #1 again on the BB100. That alone will ignite a fire in her to make some more hits I believe. I actually think JD could really help this time around as it's been a while since they did anything together (minus Save The Day, but that was a leftover).

Whitney Mariah and Celine at the Oscars 1999 (99,590)

While now we're talking about Mariah and Celine, I just observed that, correct me if I'm wrong, the only time that the vocal trinity happened to be at the same time same place together was at the Academy Awards 1999. Just imagined if the producers wanted the vocal trinity to perform for the In Memoriam segment singing song as a tribute for the legends who passed away.

I always look forward to Jermaine's music production and collaborations, that man is a musical genius and has that creative magic with Mariah. The very first song they wrote together, is one of her massive hits. That in itself is a flex.

Damn Bill, I just died laughing. Some of yours are fans excuses, didn't come directly from MC. And before this board starts, I really do love MC I am just part of a diva gladiator nation and whilest I rep MC my friends that are Patti and Whitney warriors slay me whenever MC steps on stage. So it's personal for me. Someone said I need to get over myself. Ima ignore that. But the person who asked why so many excuses. I've come to figure it out through research. From the beginning Mariah recorded songs until they sounded perfect. Narada Michael Walden said so in interviews. Mariah has always been a studio artist and a perfectionist. Unlike an athlete at a game or a broadway performer, Mariah can redo her vocals as much as possible but she suffers from stage fright and all those wonderful vocals on wax has made many consider her one of the greatest singers of all time, adding pressure. So of course she fails at live singing. She's created a vocal standard that no one can replicate. Including herself. I ain't mad at her for it. But what we're not gonna do is sit here and try to say on the spot with no rehearsals and no pristine conditions that Mariah could compare to Celine in 2022.

Reminds me so much of the quiet before the "Emancipation" storm that didn't let up until at least mid 2006, and that era began early, say around February 2005, and poor miss "I don't know her" was its first casualty. Haha.

Obsessed with Nicki Minaj (99,582)
by T from USA

Hey all. Just had a thought. We know that Mariah teamed up with Nicki in 2009 for the UOMF remix and the video and song were pretty good. But what if instead of that song she tapped Nicki to be the feature on the original Obsessed? Do you think it would've went even higher than #7 on the BB100? In stead of Gucci Mane she really could've had a smash hit if she had Nicki on the track, that's my opinion. Maybe like what a newish Jay Z was to Heartbreaker, Nicki could've been to Obsessed.

Mariah and Celine (99,578)
by Randy from USA

I'm sick of this. The difference between Mariah and Celine is Celine's ability to sound the same as her records live. Oh Celine lip syncs but it ain't even close to MCs master magic. Yes MC wrote her own songs. But Celine was able to sing hers. Oh I forgot. Mariah needs 8 hours of sleep. The mics turned up. The mics turned down. A heated venue. An air conditioned venue. No casket in front of her. The songs in a lower key because they sounded better higher when recording. No presence of an iconic diva requiring movement to the background. A sound crew that hasn't worked for Dick Clark for 30 years. Ear monitors that don't malfunction. Did I catch all the excuses?

Did Celine Dion write or produce anything in Falling Into You? Show Mariah's pen game some respect. I agree that she hasn't written anything of real substance in some time, but don't dismiss everything she did in the first 15 years of her career to just to make a point that compares her level of talent to Celine's. Celine has had a great career and is very talented, but Mariah has had every right to be arrogant about her songwriting. It did set her apart, it does set her apart and those songs have stood the test of time. It takes a supreme level of talent to sing, write and produce at the level Mariah did, even if she hasn't done that in 10 years or so. It's worth remembering that Mariah wrote and produced more number ones on her debut album than Celine or Whitney did combined for the whole of their careers. And to be clear, I really like them all. They are all very talented, but Mariah's artistry is unique and gives her a different edge when comparing them. We as fans, myself included, can sometimes take for granted the levels Mariah showed. Just because we don't see it much anymore, doesn't mean we shouldn't respect that she had that in her locker. Every year she has a song she wrote in 1994 go to number one. She is timeless.

Mariah created great songs that could've been hits on Caution. It takes more than a great song for her. It takes a massive investment in promotion and nobody is willing to invest anymore. If she featured Drake or Rihanna then maybe the case could be made for a major push.

Mariah would never include Celine for fear of being out shined on her own album. It's a sad fact but also we're dealing with someone who is very insecure to start.
