I agree. The woman is clearly drenched in insecurities and the standard with which the public judge her singing has really worked to her disadvantage over the years. I don't think she has a problem reaching the heights that she did in the past. If anything, the Christmas shows, SSFT and Vegas show that even the high chest notes are still mostly (if not entirely) there. The only problem is she can't perform her coloratura/melisma tricks anymore. Her whistle has always been fluid but even that has taken a more dramatic form. The way she's been whistling on Hearbreaker lately is a good example. Or the way she often goes off-key at the end of Vision Of Love. I don't mind if she wants to engineer the hell out of a couple of album cuts for old times' sake, but I think it's time to embrace the new dramatic aspect of her voice. Her singles must represent her voice as it is now since these will be the songs she actually sings on stage. Coloratura is too much for the lay listener anyway. History is filled with examples of opera singers taking on different roles as their voices change over the course of their careers. There is no shame in it.

100% agree. All I've ever wanted was her to work with the voice she has now and stop trying to continue to try to relive 90s Mariah moments when she can't. As a fan from the beginning of her career I've long accepted that she does not have the voice she used to have, but when she just let's go and works with what she has, she's still great. I also agree with TJ about recording songs she can't replicate live. Why record a song you had to manipulate in the studio and then lip sync most of the parts during live performances? I'd rather you work with your voice limitations than you keep half assing performances.

What a load of old [censored]. So there'a nothing in which Mariah is not a victim but this time around it's the fans' fault. What genuine first-class nonsense. Mariah has spent a decade and a half pressing songs with vocals engineered into octaves she just can't reach and/or in a quality she just can't create. Her massive ego did that, nothing else. Watching her struggle to hit notes an octave lower than the notes of the engineered vocals when they kick in live is something most fans would rather not have to witness. She engineers the vocals to something she just hasn't actually produced from her throat. When she now performs the songs she once did produce from her throat - the 90's - she refuses to drop the key of the songs and produce live vocals. She actively chooses the pre-record and squints like a [censored] on stage, flapping her jaw and waving her hand about apparently in fear of the track not kicking in and her being made to look a fool. Many years ago I argued, as did others, for lowering the songs and singing live and not charging people a fortune to watch her have what appear to be spasms on stage to the vocals she originally put out on the CD's. Now many more fans seem to want this and she *still* doesn't listen because her super massive ego won't let her. The fans let go of her being a great vocalist ages ago. Mariah hasn't. The fans' fault? Heaven forbid it actually be because of her own ego. Prize-winning nonsense.

Mariah and Beyonce should do the "So Gone Challenge" together, that would put the silly rumor to rest and be a big boon for Bey, M. and especially Monica. I love a good viral moment. Some of the freestyles are so good and some so funny. Mariah and Beyonce could just do a snap chat together grooving to the beat, sipping tea, or a splash. Lol. And if they each dropped a few bars, people would lose their minds. That would be epic.

LA's tweet was about Lil Poopy. The Blind item must have been about Ciara. So they were not related, the Blind and the tweet that is lol. LA is a professional, he was just joking about an unsigned artist it seems, not an established artist like Mariah or even Ciara.

I thought it was in reference to the rapper, Lil Poopy or whatever his moniker is. Apparently he was telling folks that he had been signed by Epic and the tweet was LA's rebuttal. I could be wrong, so please correct me if I am, lol. And I almost forgot, what the hell kind of name is Lil Poopy? SMH.

I agree, if she just embraced her current voice people would love it. Voice cracks are in. Look at Sia, her voice is the crackiest in all the land and people love her. If Mariah let her voice cracks show she's probably sound really fresh ironically.

Just to be clear, I wasn't directing my post at anyone in particular, so I don't want to think I am attacking their views. I do agree with you that she should do songs that she can replicate live. Songs that she can sing live suited for her current voice.

I'm one of the fans who has said that she can't sing like she used to. I don't want her to lipsync, but I want her to make songs that she still can do live versions of. Why use computers in studio to fix her voice?

The voice dilemma (65,595)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|

My wish for Mariah would be to embrace the flaws in her current voice and just go ahead and sing entirely live, because let's be real, even on her worst day, she can out shine any of the current artists. She just needs to take care of her voice a little better and maybe rest it right before the performances. But I understand her need to lip sync sometimes. It's because people just expect way too much from her vocally. I mean even on this board how many times have we heard "oh Mariah lost her voice" or "Mariah can't sing like she did in the early 90s", whenever she tries to sing with her current voice live. We all know Mariah is terribly self conscious and it's because of this very reason how people just expect her to sound pitch perfect and flawless all the time and expect her to sound exactly like early 90s Mariah, this causes her to resort to lip syncing. If fans were maybe more open to letting her just use her current voice without complaining about every tiny flaw, I think she'd have at least attempted to sing completely live. And this whole voice scrutinizing only happens with Mariah because when Adele delivers a bad performance, it's always "oh the back up messed up" (which wasn't untrue, but had she messed up either ways, people would still give her the "everyone has bad days" pass). Every time Mariah messes up we get the "oh she has no right to mess up when she dubs herself the best selling female artist/The Voice". No one can doubt Mariah has an immensely beautiful voice. Over the years it didn't stay as smooth, but to constantly judge her for that and then comparing her to other artists who have managed to keep their voice is a little too much. The way all of us have different way our body reacts to age and other factors, voices of different people change differently too. There is no rule of thumb. Unfortunately I think it's too late to ask Mariah to sing live because now she's already been driven over the edge of trying to sound perfect and that's an insecurity she won't ever get over. It's a shame really because she still has the most beautiful voice I've heard.

That's actually possible. I wonder if Mariah really realizes how beautiful she is, especially when she is singing. When she is singing live, there is always a certain charm and lovable quality to her that is so captivating.

Thanks Mike. Love your hat when you pop into MCA from time to time. Lol. The Blind does seem spot on in that her label must be tired of all the non music stuff. Will she have time to "promote" this hard when and if she ever does a record? Seems doubtful, but who knows.

That is not about Mariah, at least LA Reid's comment is not about Mariah. LA was talking about some young rapper named Young Poopy. Lol. If LA had anything to say about Mariah, I am sure it will be classy and professional. Who knows what the label is thinking though.

New #1 soon (65,587)

Unfortunately, that #1 doesn't look like it'll be from Mariah. This song is off of a Netflix Original Series soundtrack and was released just a few weeks ago. I predict it to be a huge smash. I just wish it was Mariah singing it. I still love it though. Kudos to the video maker. Wonderful editing job.

Miming theory (65,586)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

Okay this may paint Mariah as a bit too vain, but let's be straight here - she has progressively obsessed about her appearance in just about everything she does what with her constant hair flips and acting as if she's completely surrounded by mirrors and cameras all the time. So yeah, Mariah mimes a good 30-40% of her shows these days. Aside from the fact that it's simply become more of a struggle for her to hit the usual money notes, and the valid yet abused excuse of her "saving her voice", I feel like another good reason why she lips is because she wants to be able to get through even the most difficult performances as pretty and poised as possible. We know that when she just lets go, she can really almost mimic, if not even surpass certain parts of the recorded versions of her songs, albeit nowadays that comes with the price of her running around directionless on stage with her arms madly waving in all places. The worst part is that she doesn't seem to think that this is the biggest thing that gives her away. Most recent case in point, she'd lip the first 2 lines of the second My All chorus, pause for a second and then come in live at "'cause I can't go on..." until the chorus ends. You clearly see how she somehow even manages to smile while "singing" those first 2 lines while she struggles a bit with the following lines, which are supposed to be easier to sing. In fairness to her for this particular song, it is hard to belt out the beginning of the chorus when it pretty much segues from the end of the preceding verse, but that's the problem. But still, don't pretend to sing a difficult part of any song with such ease and serene facial expression only to expose that you faked it later on by showing signs of struggle when the singing the less challenging parts and then think that you have everybody fooled. She must stop keeping up this ideal of looking pretty, sexy and perfect every time she performs. Early Mariah managed to hit those high notes more easily and gracefully in the past and yet she rarely wanted to act out any intention of seducing the audience. Now she just can't seem to do without the fake-sexy-come-hither-gaze-while-feeling-herself-all-over-too-much routine. Her efforts are split between looking great while sounding good and while that's still possible to some extent, it just makes one wonder what magic would happen if that energy went into actually trying to nail the song.
