Re: Caution review (86,028) (86,047)

After the first listen what comes to my mind is that the album sounds very modern. I'm surprised of the sound/vibe of it. It's definitely a new side of her music, almost a bit experimental. I'm happy that we got with "Portrait" one "classic" Mariah song. A song with more heart and soul and the lyrics are more my taste. And I love the violin at the end.
My favorites yet: 1. Portrait 2. Giving me life (wow, love at first listen) 3. The distance 4. Caution
The album is indeed very short, but "MIAMTEC" was the opposite so it's ok. I like that the lyrics are in the booklet. I missed them on "MIAMTEC". Does anybody know why the fans/lambs are not listed on the thank you notes of the booklet at the end? I'm just wondering.
I agree with her voice, she sounds good but sometimes a bit nasal. So for me it's not her "Thriller" but I'm happy with it. I'm sure after a few repeats of the whole album, there will come more to mind. So happy Caution Day for all of you.

Mariah not only references Marylin Monroe on Giving Me Life she also references Barbra Streisand and her hit Evergreen when she sings "Livin' like Babs 'cause it's evergreen."

Caution - my take (86,045)
by Critter from USA

I have a simple taste for good music. If it can't make me hum/sing to it after a few listens, then it won't make to my playlist. Why would I let a song grow on me?
The first few songs available before the sale are her stronger tracks. I am grateful. Thanks MC. I am not feeling the rest of the album. Many of you says, X is this song, Part II; Y is that song Part III. It only means X, or Y are not as good or original.
Anyway, my standout tracks: 1. The distance 2. A no no 3. GTFO 4. Runway. Especially the version featuring the Japanese singer. The ending reminds of "I feel it coming" by Weeknd. Groovy.

Caution review (86,043)

My favorites are: 1. Caution 2. 8th Grade 3. One Mo Gen 4. The Distance 5. A No No 6. GTFO 7. With You 8. Giving Me Life I am really trying to like Stay Long Love You. I think it is gonna take a random play during my workout one day to like it. We will see.
This is her most coehesive album since TEOM. Caution is another career defining album behind Daydream, Butterfly, and TEOM. She put her heart and soul into this one. My surprise producers are Fred Ball, Timbaland, The Stereotypes, Skillrex and Lido. We had no idea she had been the studio with them. Great songs with them.

Caution (86,042)

I do want to give props where credit is due. So far I've heard 1/2 the album and I love it. Mariah has heard the criticisms about her voice and sound and has delivered something enjoyable. The production on the album is current and her voice in its lower range on this album is pleasant and beautiful. The criticisms I have with her are when she performs her old material and it's evident her voice is gone. That is what pains me and I'm sure it pains her. However, she is my all-time favorite artist and as such I can say truthfully she delivered a solid product I really like. Everyone ages and has their peak, and I'm glad Mariah has continued to stay relevant, producing music she is proud of and also current with the times. She's at a point where she doesn't have to break any records or prove herself. she's having fun and so am I. I'm so happy she's inspired again. Thank you Mariah.

I am considering going to this show but feel uncomfortable going alone. Is anyone on this board going to this show in NYC and want to meet up? If so let me know where you have seats?

Proceed with Caution (86,040)

1. GTFO (great track) 2. With You (I love me some "With you") 3. Caution (kind of generic for me, meh) 4. A No No (I liked this one from first listen) 5. The Distance (best single possibility) 6. Giving Me Life (a gem, especially the last minute, ethereal) 7. One Mo' Gen' (fun, lots of sexual visuals ) 8. 8th Grade (I loved it instantly) 9. Stay Long Love You (after 3rd listen, I like it, catchy) 10. Portrait (beautifully sung, so Mariah. I wish she had gone full force vocally on this one, but it's still beautiful) 11. Runway (The Slipping Away of this album) 12. Runway (ft. KOHH) (I don't understand what the Japanese guy is saying, but it sounds very cool, both versions are great) "Caution" should've definitely be replaced by "Runway".
This is great effort by Mariah. It's good I first read all your comments before I listened so I knew what to expect. I hope Mariah does something about her voice for her next album, the decline has been so quick within a few years, I'm kind of worried, but I'm happy with the album though.

Caution review (86,039)
by Jono from USA

I already love this album. The production is so different from what Mariah has done in a while - easily her most redefining sound since TEOM. Since 2005 I felt like she has been trying to replicate the sound of the album without much success. Caution seems like a new direction for her while still retaining what makes her Mariah. This is how R&B sounds like in 2018 and I am here for it.

Caution (86,038)
by darrian liu from taiwan

Hands down, her best body of work in more than a decade. The album's sonically more experimental, less formulaic than her usual, yet still preserves the Mariah signature sound. The album is cohesive and concise, the hooks are strong without being too in-your-face, and the productions great. Her voice no longer sounds as artificial and engineered as how it sounded in MIAM. I should note though, her whistles here are used really sparingly and in a way I have never heard Mariah do before. For example, in 8th Grade we can hear her whistles being chopped up and reversed, making it an actual part of the music instead of an additional embellishment. I do have to say though, Caution is not as melodic as MIAM. However, it more than makes it up by its cohesion and experiment. I've never heard Mariah do a song like Giving Me Life before. The album feels current, fresh, and inspired. Very impressed with it. (You know something's good when you go "Mariah? Mariah this is a serve" with nearly every song lmao.)
Favorite tracks (in no particular order): GTFO, With You, Caution, A No No, The Distance, Giving Me Life, Stay Love Love You, Portrait.

Amazing album. Congrats MC. Highlights: 8th Grade, Caution and One More Gen. Oh hell the whole album is on fire. This is coming from a fan since 92. This is better than Bruno's album of the year, Grammy winning 24 carat Magic. Love love the new sound. Bravo.

Caution review (86,028)
by Tevin from USA

I love it. Yes I wish there were more in your face vocal moments (like at the end of Portraits, I wish she would have let loose lol), but overall it was a great body of work. It sounds like a Mariah album and it definitely sounds fresh a current. (Like the extended ending to GML, sounds like a Drake or Chance The R song.) I love the vibe and feel of this album.
For those saying they wanted a more upbeat in your face album, to be honest this time of year I don't think that would work. It's fall/winter and this is a perfect laid back groove album to listen to.
Highlights: Portraits, sounds like an updated version of Petals.
Stay Love You L: Early 2000s throwback sound.
Love hearing Mariah's low and mid range voice. The harmonies was good.
Lowlights: Her higher belts sounded a bit strained, nasal and forced, I'm a bit worried that if its sounded like that after production and editing and perfecting, she must be going through something with her voice right now (think Rainbow era problems). Hopefully she can get whatever is happening negatively to her voice in check.
Song ranks 1. A No No 2. Caution 3. SLLY 4. Portraits 5. Giving Me Life
P.S. Don't hate me but I do not like One Mo Gen. All in all it's a great reintroduction to the GP for Mariah. 4.5 out of 5.

This album is impeccable, but how is nobody here raving about Portrait? I guess it comes from being so emotionally unstable huh? Whatever. It speaks to me on so many levels. If this song was on Daydream or Butterfly, I know it would be a forever classic. Mariah, Mariah... you've done it again. I love Caution, I love Glitter, thank you for opening your bleeding soul. Some of us aren't scared to bleed, and you doing it, wow. My favourite artist of all time will always be Miss Mariah Carey

Yep, the dark era (86,025)
by Matthew from USA

I know this is the dark note era, but I was still holding out hope she would muster up the energy to fly on one of the songs, even if it would be impossible to reproduce live. She can do it, because I hear bits and pieces of bright moments on the ad libs in the background. Instead we have songs that she probably can sing live but don't translate well live. I mean, The Distance is a bop, but Mariah in a ballgown and heels trying to sing this song doesn't translate. Anyway, I will purchase and stream. Hopefully she gets a #1 album. The Distance is my fav, followed by GTFO, then they all kind of start to blend together. Portraits was a nice nostalgia moment, but she should have at least went bright there at the end since she didn't do it on With You. Also, even on her whisper notes, I used to be able to understand Mariah. Is it just me having trouble with half the lyrics? I probably just need new headphones. Anyway, it's a very moody album with MC exploring a lot of her dark/lower/nasal range only. C+/B- for me.
