I actually love "Can't say no". I like the part where she rewrote "thoughts of you and I still kill me slow". I like the rap also.

My perfect 90s Mariah trifecta / Cosmo vid (90,372)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
In the Cosmo video she did recently with her makeup artist, Kristofer asked Mariah her least favorite song. Her response sums up how she feels (and how I also feel) about her earlier material. She didn't name a specific track, but she basically said she doesn't like some of her earlier material because it contained tracks that she did just to appease the label. It's pretty clear she was referring to her first three albums. As genius and blockbuster as some of her earlier songs were, let's be really honest - they were surrounded by her most banal material to date. You Need Me? So Blessed? Just To Hold You Once Again? These and some other songs on those albums are the exact reason why Mariah was dismissed by critics then, they were rife with corny lines and clichés. I remember reading a review from a harsh but often truthful critic saying that she tries so hard to sing about something she doesn't know, which is love. Many of her current lyrics are very cringe-worthy, but back then, the situation was somehow even worse as it was as if she was trying so hard to sound mature and poetic, something she wouldn't really achieve effortlessly until Daydream onwards.
The Daydream - Butterfly - Rainbow era the will always be my favorite time as a Mariah fan, because it was that period when she finally had significant creative say on her releases. I have said it before and I'll say it again: the most impressive thing about these albums, although not of equal quality, is how Mariah seamlessly and convincingly transitioned from adult contemporary pop to R&B to hip-hop to urban.
Many fans deem Daydream perfect, which is accurate, as it is, up to this date, the best balance she has struck between artistry and commercial appeal. It deserved the Grammy for AOTY just as much as Jagged Little Pill has, but lacked the latter's edge. JLP defined the sound of a generation, while Daydream was more of an impressive artistic feat. Had they known back then how much the Fantasy remix's cultural impact would be years later, things might have gone differently.
Butterfly is Mariah's magnum opus for a reason. It was the first time that a Mariah album didn't sound calculated and radio-hungry. Whatever it turned out to be and achieved was fueled by an unadulterated need for expression; and express she did beautifully as Butterfly is home to many of her best lyrics. It edges out both Daydream and Rainbow because it is evident how she actually loves every song on the album (as lovely as When I Saw You and Open Arms were, they felt like she did them for the label or so as to not alienate her more conservative fans). Butterfly just sounds classy, sexy and expensive, and is her only 90s album that could still stand today in its entirety.
Rainbow, turning 20 this year (God we're old), is easily the worst of the three and has aged the worst. It may not be her best work as a whole, but I'll always be impressed at how she was able to come up with an good enough body of work at all considering the unfavorable circumstances she was in during its creation. And it has produced quintessential tracks such as Heartbreaker, Crybaby and Bliss, so it's still a worthy part of her discography. In fairness to Rainbow, a majority of the huge albums released during that era have aged just as badly, maybe even worse (FanMail, ...Baby One More Time, Christina Aguilera, Millennium, On The 6, etc.) leading me to think that it was somehow also a production thing. And Rainbow had some of best execution of the pop-urban sound at that time - a period where producers who were aiming for a modern, futuristic sound mostly resorted to annoying blips, squelchy and bombastic synths, random mechanical sounds, robotic vocal samples and frenetic, busy beats.
We can't downplay the importance of Mariah's first 3 albums were as those put her on the map and allowed her to continue making music and improve her craft. The second half of the 90s may not have been as kind to Mariah as the first half commercially, but it helped shape the Mariah we know now more than any other period in her entire career. That's where the unhealthy lifestyle, ridiculous antics, childish vocabulary and diva persona really started, and everything that followed the decade after was just a heightened, larger-than-life version. Still, it's the music that mattered at the end of the day, and her 95-99 output sure gave us some serious Mariah fever.

Oh my gosh, they say Mariah's vocals sound crispier on the new Daydream vynil [sic] because of the new color. And the scratchy vynil sound on Underneath The Stars sounds amazing, like very scratchy-achy. I'm definitely not getting a copy. Sorry, mixed my meds again.

Sometimes they are really able to tease me a lot to make me buy more copies. Anyway I keep strong I bought it when it was out and it is still in mint condition. But I must say that this color and 180gr is better than the orignal LP. For all the new fans or fans and collectors it is a must have. I am waiting a feedback from you guys if you get it. Enjoy your weekend everybody.

Heartbreaker was definitely originally intended for All That Glitters but when the film got delayed MC thought it was too good to shelve and pretty much made Rainbow off the back of it. Personally I don't mind the album. Crybaby, Petals, After Tonight, Bliss, CTTA and Heartbreaker and its remix are all great. Also I like the bright cover, all her others were quite muted and dull up until then.

Wasn't the production of Rainbow rushed to finish of her contract with Sony? I also understood that lots of the initial material for "All that Glitters" was later used on Rainbow. To me the album isn't very coherent and I hardly ever listen to it these days. Heartbreaker remains an iconic MC song though.

Fly abandonedly into the rainbow (90,363)
by Andrew from London UK
| |
|

The Roof is *sophisticated*. It is the only word that comes to mind. The Butterfly album is sophistication exemplified. I think this is why Rainbow is so disliked amongst fans.
Rainbow was a product of its time, of the TCL, Britney et al. easy pop sound that happened around that time. Rainbow is what it is. But after Butterfly, the tinny production, blandness of material and rushed vocals of Rainbow only served to highlight how great previous material was. Videos included. Further, the album name was too girly for broad appeal, the cover was weird and the CD inliner not having the lyrics in favour of a heavily doctored vanity poster only added salt to the wound.
But if Butterfly were released in 1999, do you think it would have been as successful? I don't think so. She did what she had to do. I have great memories of Rainbow due to the age I was upon its release. I thought the Heartbreaker covers were a fun choice of colours and the twisty-top-against-sky image of TGIFY is one of the most iconic Mariah images ever. Yes, the album itself is not standing the test of time. It was the beginning of the crash. But you have to admit that it's a lot more fun than Butterfly. So that's how I take it. With a pinch of salt. Even if in the wound.
And, finally: Did I Do That is awesome. Get thee to a nunnery if thou thinkst not.

Fourth of July (90,362)

With Fourth of July, the story she painted with her lyrics is what makes the song amazing, the same thing with The Roof the story along with the video is MC in all of her sexy glory without trying too hard. I really miss some of these moments it just takes you down lane, and it makes me appreciate MC for her great talent as a brilliant songwriter and story teller.

I will admit initially The Roof went over my head (pun intended) but it didn't take too long for me to get completely immersed in the incredible lyrics, storytelling, and perfectly atmospheric vibe of the song. The thing is The Roof is a total mood and the video captured it perfectly. It has aged so well, "every time I feel the need" to listen to it again I love it that much more. Easily an underrated masterpiece in the book of Mariah.

It's is the best song she has ever written. Most people will remember the impact of WBT because of the comeback factor but TR is so much more powerful. As you mentioned, the longing to a passed moment of bliss is what it makes so poignant. Over the years my favourite songs have shifted but this one never fades in strength or message.

Article: Mariah Carey's ex-manager gets death threats (90,359)

I'm so evil, why did I laugh when I saw this? Maybe because it's a "snakes in the grass, it's time to cut the lawn" moment. Stella planted some bad seeds and karma is just working out for her. It's ironic she says that her kids were exposed to seedy things when working with Mariah. Give me a break, she's been in the entertainment business. They've probably saw worse things. She messed up by having family in her camp.

I probably shouldn't tell you that I didn't care for the video. The way you describe it makes it sound so stinking great, but when I listen to the song it falls flat. I initially thought that maybe because I can't relate to the song that's why I've never felt it like you all, but I can't relate to a lot of songs yet I love them. I'm going to listen to this remix that was posted and I'll listen to the original song one last time. I really want to like it.

The beauty in The Roof is in a number of elements. The lyrics are one. It is a beautifully painted picture and, in a way, perfectly describes that nostalgic longing for something that never was. As it happens, I had a similar experience with someone, on a rooftop bar nonetheless, that was intense but went no further. I do re-live that moment from time to time, so it does really speak to me. The music is the other. The sample is perfect and it creates this atmosphere like no other song on the album. It has a sense of urgency to it, and is melancholic and subdued, and the beat is almost like the city below or the driving rain. The visuals is the other piece of the puzzle. It's the transition from the antics on the roof (her memory), and the shots in the limo. As it's raining outside, she is warm and cosy in the limo reminiscing, but then to experience that night again, she opens the sun roof and lets the rain fall on her. All the pieces together just worked. And the way she sings so softly and gently, is like a distant memory or dream. I love the exiting ad lib of "last night I had the strangest dream. It was actually quite symbolic. And I whispered that I love you, very subtly". It is just poetry. Can't believe so many people on this planet haven't heard it.

I'm still not into The Roof. I've been trying hard to hear what you all are hearing that makes it so great, but I get nothing. Now Breakdown is another story. I've said this before, but Breakdown is a masterpiece. Of all of her songs with rap artists this one to me is the most well put together hip hop infused songs. Nothing was out of place. The vocals were great and the raps matched the song perfectly (I'm still pissed at Rick Ross and his strippers on Triumphant lol). She could not have picked a better group to collaborate with imo.

Mariah, Mariah (Say Somethin' So So Def Remix) (90,354)
by Lafa from Sweden

I am not after something here, a "mention" or whatever. But I was featured in Say Somethin' So So Def Remix over the web without knowing about it which is funny so I see it as a "hello" from Mariah. Mariah doesn't feature anyone in her songs actually. This was spiritual reasons behind. So people here have probably heard my singing recording to Mariah. It would be fun if Mariah herself heard it, since this is full voice singing so I don't have to be ashamed.

Haha. Yeh Butterfly is always happily in the middle of my ranking too, but the lyrics really lift it up. The Roof is also one of the best things she ever did. That and Breakdown are really the backbone of the album. My only annoyance is the mumbling and whispered approach to most verses.

Not sure if I ever posted about revisiting this song. It's kind of awesome. The vocals just fit so nicely and the lyrics are great. I'm glad she kept it simple with the vocals because the song didn't need Holleriah. The Butterfly album is slowly creeping up on my list. I think it was like number 5 or 6 of albums I love by her. I know some of you are going to pass out from reading this. How dare I put the world's bestest album ever so low on the list. Fight me. Lol.
