Great analogy. Erotica was considered Madonna's "love letter to the gays" at the time and is one of the first albums to bravely address the AIDS epidemic and homosexuality, both of which were taboo topics at the time that pretty much everyone shied away from. One difference between the Erotica + Sex and the Glitter soundtrack + movie eras was the intent behind it. Mariah did it to launch her movie career and broaden her musical horizons, while Madonna did it in hopes of desensitizing the public when it comes to discussions relating to sex, especially female sexual expression. Another key difference is that Glitter bombed by every standard imaginable largely due to the fact that the movie sucked and because of the 9/11 incident; while Erotica + Sex were still very successful and only bombed compared to Madonna's previous successes, it's just that the public were already tired of her penchant for controversy at the time, thinking she had gone too far.
Which makes me appreciate Bedtime Stories more because it was the first time since Madonna's debut where she didn't rely on deliberate button-pushing for promotion. The focus was on the music. Even the promotional strategies were clever. She promoted Secret via a snippet online (which was revolutionary in 1994), and used the tagline, "Madonna wants to tuck you in bed with her new album", tuck with a "T", which is obviously a naughty wink to her oversexualised Erotica image.

Eddie I just call em as I see em. You three like to gang up on the zealot posters here because you find them easy targets but people can say some scathing things about Mariah or make racial "jokes" and no one bats an eye because they are fans of the vitrol comments because they get a lot of likes. I hit dog will holler.

The Babyface + Madonna combo is still probably one of the most random collaborations in pop music. Babyface did so well in the production, especially how he layered Madonna's vocals to make it sound more full and plush. That instrumental is still everything, though. The pentatonic notes in the intro is so distinct that the song is instantly recognizable within the first 2 seconds of hearing it. If there was one Madonna song that I wish were Mariah's, it's Take A Bow. So lush, cinematic, elegant and even expensive.

I found the demo for Take a Bow on YouTube. It still sounds nice, but the Babyface touches really helped to boost the final product of the song alot.

Very true about BS and the current state of music. The thing I find interesting is how much Erotica was overlooked as an album because of her whole Erotica book. The album itself is one of my favorite Madge albums. It's akin to what happened to Mariah, the Glitter movie, and the Glitter soundtrack.

Madge gets a lot of hate for being a button-pusher who has minimal talent, but truth be told, the woman is still the wisest, boldest, most instinctive woman in music. She wasn't popular because of shock value. She was popular especially among women and the LGBT community because she embodied what they secretly wanted to be, especially in such a restrictive and repressive society at the time. It's almost like they lived vicariously through her.
Bedtime Stories was the first album where she hired the hottest, most in-demand producers. I am still pleasantly surprised she pulled it off, both the change in sound and the album's success in general, especially coming off of Erotica which almost ended her career. BS redeemed her to the public, saving her career and was the first step to making her likable again. It's a masterclass in crisis management. The album is also a prime example that an artist can dabble in current sounds and work with the producers of the moment without sounding like they were "selling out". It's her last album that had her sense of humor, as well as the last time she ever effectively pulled off the sex symbol image. Plus all the videos in that era were just art.

I also love Bedtime Stories, especially "Secret", "Take a Vow", "Human Nature", "Bedtime Stories" and "Love Tried to Welcome Me". It was also a huge surprise for me when Madonna went from Pop to R&B. Babyface's background vocals on "Take a Vow" are just amazing to me. CrazySexyCool has always been a favorite of mine too. I miss the 90's so much in terms of the quality of the music, when we actually didn't have all these online platforms overstimulating and throwing things at us from all directions without giving us time to digest this or that. I loved when Mariah would disappear and just show up with a new single, and the single already had notes stating the future album it was coming from, the anticipation was simply great.

You said a mouthful. 90s R&B music was everything. They certainly don't make a lot of great music like that anymore and the ones who still try to don't sell very well and are deemed flops by the children. Bedtime Stories is the last great album by Madonna for me. The last person I'd ever thought I'd hear on a Madonna song is Babyface. The combination was so odd yet it worked so well. Whomever steered her in that direction deserves so much praise. That whole album was a beautiful surprise.
