Bill, you are all over the place. Whether or not AWFCIY existed or not, those accomplishments I mentioned are in fact still there. Mariah has never been irrelevant and will never be. Literally no artist has accomplished what she has. Are you sure she is not 20? Because 50 has never looked better.
I don't get the whole putting out records at 80, so I'm just go ahead and play some MIAM, ugh underrated album.

I'm still happy AIWFCIY is her 19th #1. Fourth is amazing considering the album is 25 years old and the album is facing new music on the charts too.

How is a fact shade? She's 50, not 20. If she's still putting out records at 80 I'll come back and say I was factually incorrect.

Second half of her career? The shade. She gave us 2 #1s. Another classic Christmas album, a worldwide anthem Obsessed, song of the summer, #Beautiful. Also 4 great albums, and many more magical moments. The second half of her career made a lot of us lambs. You guys can uplift whatever you want without tearing up something just because you may not like it. AIWFCIY is the icing on a beautiful cake.

I don't see it as a gimmick, especially as Mariah herself has embraced it. AIWFCIY has given the second half of her career continued mileage rather than us seeing her fading into legendary irrelevance.

Hmm, I guess official numbers for Billboard 200 are in and they have "Merry Christmas" at #4 with combined sales and album equivalent units of 71,000. For comparison, Harry Styles who is at #1 has a combined units of 89,000. Either way still a victory for MC, this is the first time the album is in the top 5 since 1994.

Hi everyone. Actually I would say that Without You is her signature song here in Europe. It is her "I will always love you"/"My heart will go on". Actually I believe Mariah has at least 5 or 6 signature songs that have become a template for other songs. 1990 - Vision of love: The Magna Carta of melisma. The song that real singers study. Especially in the US. 1992 - Hero: Personal, inspirational. 1993-Without You: It is the European version of "Vision of love". It is Mariah's breakthrough on a more global scale. To this day it is the Mariah ballad everybody everywhere knows. 1994 - All I want for Christmas is You: Pretty obvious by now. 1995 - Always be my Baby: The perfect RnB/Pop combo. Another template. One of those cool songs you don't have to be a fan to love. And who doesn't frankly? 2005 - We Belong Together: Same. Actually all I want for Christmas is a song from today in a way. So I believe Mariah's been able to turn one of her 2 decade old song into another signature song. Amazing. Happy holidays everyone.

What this board just proved Mariah doesn't have a signature song. Every generation have their song and it's fine. Gosh her power. One of the few legends that can say that, lots of teenagers know WBT, speaking mostly for the urban community and the twitter community. WBT is beloved by everyone who hears it who isn't biased towards Mariah or with shitty taste. It's gone viral on twitter more times than I count with millions of views, thousands of retweet's.

Here's something I have never noticed in all these years. The picture on that Fourth of July A Capella video is from the Butterfly photoshoot. Look at Mariah's eyes. The eye make up on each eye is a butterfly wing.

Whenever Mariah is in the tabloids, you will probably read this sentence or something of the like: "Spotted with the Always Be My Baby singer, 49, was..." Mariah is known for this song by many people and it was so for a long time. A signature anything is a product by which someone is identified (it doesnt just have to be by non-fans). I submit that the resurgence in the charts of AIWFCIY has meant younger people are more aware of Mariah than they otherwise would be. It was once thought that Mariah likely had several signature songs. But if it is now the case that one of them has accelerated and made the others like Hero etc. forgotten then so be it. I simply meant to offer that I do not want this to have happened. Being wheeled out once a year for schmaltz feels gimmicky. And Mariah was ever anything but a gimmick.

I remember when I showed a friend like 20 Mariah songs, he really got into ABMB, I become so mad, this was 1-2 years after I became a lamb. I showed him like 5 more songs but he still liked it the most. I thought for the longest that the song was too simple, too boring basically. Damn was I wrong, the friend started playing it every time we hung out. It made me fall in love with it, some Mariah songs did not age well, especially the catalogue from the 90s. Some of that music doesn’t do anything for me, you can really feel a artist being held captive. The vocals are great, the lyrics are greater but you can hear the soul being disconnected. But boy did that one age well.

Agreed. Daydream changed music in general forever. Fantasy remix anyone? I hope Daydream gets the same 25th anniversary treatment like Merry Christmas did. People need to be reminded just how monumental that album is.

She did in fact recorded it with Luis Miguel, but he didn't like the outcome, but Mariah was on a time constraint and went with her solo version.

Oh how I love Breakdown. I was listening to that earlier, on repeat. The whole Butterfly album has such an understated class to it. I'm with you in that it's not my go to album like most, but it's probably her "best" album in terms of being a great representation of her song writing, her vocals, her wall of sound, and the genres she operates in.

I'm not detracting from ABMB. I love it, everyone loves it. But ask the 55 year old guy on the desk next to you at work to name a Mariah Carey song, and it's going to be AIWFCIY or Hero. Ask a 17 year old in the street and it will be AIWFCIY. A signature song is by definition the tune identified by people who don't know the artist's material. Sinead O'Connor's signature tune is Nothing Compares 2 U. I know she's been around for decades and has, I've no doubt, made many albums I'm sure, but that's her signature song because it's the one everybody outside the orbit of a seasoned fan knows.
ABMB did indeed debut at number 3. It's chart run was 3, 4, 10, 13, 20, 27, 30, 39 and then it left the top 40. By comparison Hero's chart run was 8, 7, 11, 9, 15, 18, 18, 18, 15, 14, 23 and then left the top 40. It didn't peak as high, but you can see it hung around a fair bit longer and also even went up and down positions during its run.
And for good measure AIWFCIY's run(s) in the top 40 were:
1994: 5, 2, 2, 2, 8, 28 2007: 23, 8, 4, 6, 20 2008: 37, 17, 12, 17, 25 2009: 29, 19, 21, 18 2010: 22, 23, 25, 31 2011: 27, 12, 11, 12 2012: 30, 20, 21, 20 2013: 14, 12, 13, 30 2014: 17, 16, 18, 20 2015: 35, 13, 12, 11, 37 2016: 29, 6, 8, 5, 5 2017: 34, 22, 5, 2, 4, 4 2018: 34, 6, 5, 4, 2 2019: 34, 8, 6, 8, 2
Sorry, I geek out on stuff like this. As you can see though, AIWFCIY is actually becoming more popular as the years pass by. Unfortunately other Mariah classics that we all love haven't seen the same resurgence. I do agree though, I would love for her other material to get the recognition it deserves, but there's no denying really that AIWFCIY is her global hit. It is her I Will Always Love You/My Heart Will Go On. I'm not sure why people are upset that her signature song has become a Christmas song though, I'm so grateful that she has a song that is universally loved by all and will secure her legacy long after Mariah and ourselves have all left this world.
But we love all the songs. Except Boy.

Signature song (92,016)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
| |
|

As fans of MC different songs have different meanings for each of us. But when breakdown it can be very difficult to choose just one signature song. If I to choose I would say Always Be My Baby is a great melody, that gives you a fun vibe it can be played on any station and make you feel good, even people who may not love MC as we do know this song. Side bar, Always Be My Baby has aged well, and sounds timeless. But Hero, and All I Want for Christmas is You are also great contenders for Mariah's signature song as well.

I think you may succumbing to unfairly downplaying the signifcance of something you just don't support. ABMB is known by almost everybody. I have done (murdered) it and seen it done (murdered worse) in karaoke many times over in the past decade. And it (almost without fail) makes everyone sit up, smile and sing along. People know it. To say it did not impact outside of the US is simply not true. I am pretty sure it debuted at Number 3 in the UK (this may not be accurate but I can't be arsed to check). So it's okay to prefer All I Want but other songs should not be downplayed.
And, speaking of All I Want For Christmas is You, it is certainly genius. I didn't say it is not her signature song. I simply said I do not want it to be.
Mariah risks turning herself into a gimmick wheeled out once a year to sing that tune. For her own sake she needs a hell of a lot of emphasis on her non-seasonal work. With Fantasy's inclusion in a new trailer, Daydream should really be pushed as a significant moment in musical history. As should Butterfly. Perhaps with concerts (in London, of course) singing those albums from start to finish. And I think Mariah should be trying to get headline gigs at festivals like Glastonbury.
A career is for life, not just for Christmas.

Well I was going to reply yesterday to say it was only at 10 here, but the new charts came out today and it was at 1. But then Wham is at 3 and Buble at 4 so there must have been some serious festivity going on in the last week. They are also the only 3 songs in the top 10 I know.

They posted this Fourth of July acapella like they knew I needed it. I'm not a huge Butterfly album person like alot y'all, but it's creeping up my list slowly with this song alone. Never thought I'd find a song that could possibly knock Breakdown off my most loved song from Butterfly, but it's doing it. The song is just perfect.

Merry Christmas projected to be #1 on BB200 (92,008)
by JC from United States
| |

Per Rolling Stone charts, "Merry Christmas" album is projected to be the number one album this week. Their projections have been consistent the last few weeks with the actual Billboard 200 (at least with the top 5 albums). If this comes to fruition, this means MC will have a double number one both on the Hot 100 and 200.
