8th Grade (92,453) by Dove from United States
Speaking of 8th Grade, has anyone watched this movie? It captures the feeling I think Mariah is singing about.

Re: Mariah (92,449) (92,452) by RibbonB from USA
Now B, every review? I'm just pissed not enough reviewers explored and expounded on the beauty that is 8th Grade. That's one tune I would love her to take a deep dive into in her memoirs. And I'm not talking about the metaphor she gave of her being devastated at thirteen about her lack of clothes and orange hair. Lol.

Singled should have read so glad.

"Songwriting abilities is not just measured by success, most of Mariah's greatest songs didn't even sell and I don't care if they were a single or not."

Um, I didn't say that, anywhere in my message. In fact, the song I referenced as superior was an album track that is unknown outside her fandom, and was not a single.

As I said in my message, it's just my opinion. If you think GTFO is a great example of Mariah's songwriting, over, say, AIWFCIY, Close My Eyes, Outside, Breakdown, Petals, Can't Let Go, Vision of Love and Vanishing then, well, so be it.

But the fact of the matter is, it isn't.

In every review of Caution Mariah's songwriting was praised.

She and Tyler are friends and have supported each other before. I'm just singled she had to drop out of the time that then went to Thandie Newton in For Colored Girls. Mimi was pregnant, thank God and dropped out. Mariah could be good in just the right kind of TP production though.

Bill, songwriting abilities is not just measured by success, most of Mariah's greatest songs didn't even sell and I don't care if they were a single or not. Just like how people try to diminish artists without a Grammy. Awards and hits ain't everything. It's about connecting. And her 400 million streams on her new album proves that so your opinion is invalid.

Re: Mariah (92,445) (92,446) by RibbonB from USA
GTFO is from her reality show basic era. Let's see where she goes from here, or there. She has a Songwriters Hall of Fame induction to consider now. JK, she's gonna write what she feels a D, it will be interesting to know what that is.

Re: Mariah (92,444) (92,445) by Bill from the UK
I wouldn't say "her pen is as sharp as ever" when she hasn't written a top ten hit song in ten years. Not taking away from her songwriting talent of course, but "I was wayward child, with the weight of the world, that I held deep inside, life was a winding road, and I learned many things, little ones shouldn't know" is slightly better than "how bout you get the f*** out". Just my opinion.

Re: Mariah (92,439) (92,444) by B from USA
Agreed. I love each member of the Vocal Trinity but I think Mariah's the best singer of the three and she one upped the other two by writing her songs. She's untouchable in the studio and her pen is a sharp as ever. Even at her worst her voice still sounds pleasing to me because of sunshine and champagne tone. Whitney was my favorite singer until I heard Fantasy and I was enraptured by Mariah's angelic voice and then diving into her back catalogue was an experience I'll never forget.

Imagining living in a world where you think Celine Dion has anything on Mariah. I have to laugh. Oh I'm sorry her lip syncing skills are so much better. Mariah is one of the world's greatest singer-songwriter-producers in the world. A true artist. Celine is a great singer. That's it.

Re: Celine vs. Mariah (92,437) (92,442) by Musti from UK
"And as for range, remove Mariah's whistle register and their ranges were pretty much the same and Celine now beats Mariah in that respect."

Except we can't remove it because she has always had it. Her whistle range is not some happenstance. She has unmatched control over it, the type of control other singers would kill to have over something so rare. It doesn't matter where her voice is now. She has nothing to prove. And honestly, it's really hard to know what Celine can or can't do live these days because she is a pro lipper. Although she can likely do more than Mariah, this doesn't discount Mariah's exceptional talent. Please don't make me bring up Maria Callas again, the uber legend whose true legacy rests upon merely 10 years' of recordings and a plethora of live performances throughout the 1950s. Mariah gave us over 2 decades of it before her voice really started to decline.

However I do agree that Celine deserves more credit than just being called calculated. Those who are unfamiliar with her French work should check out her album Dion Chante Plamondon. You don't even need to know French. Her passion and the constant changes in her tone are enough to prove how incredible she is.

I've just watched the movie. It's really good. Highly recommended. Parts of the ending were expected but Tyler still managed to sneak in some twists in there. I'm glad Mariah associated herself with this movie in some way.

She is awesome in my book. Let's focus on her accomplishments in 2020 and what she will do in the new year. I wonder what are her plans after the Vegas shows. Is she planning a new album to tie in with the book? It is also the 30th Anniverasary of Mariah Carey. Will Sony Legacy re-release the album on vinyl and a remastered CD with bonus tracks? We may get Weakness of the Body on CD this year. Surely, something is planned for this year besides I Had A Vision Of Love.

Mariah (92,439) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
Why can't we just accept Mariah for who she is in regards to her strengths and weaknesses. To continuously put her up against other vocalists does nothing to diminish her greatness or theirs. We should be grateful for the fact that we still have our Mariah amongst us giving us her legendary talents, and artistry. With all the gifts she has blessed upon us we should be celebrating her because she is finally going to be recognized for something that she loves, and a craft that we have come to love, and respect her for.

Re: Celine vs. Mariah (92,437) (92,438) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Haha. Oh Andrew. I'd go all Ricky Gervais on you right now and say, "shut up, shut up, I don't care" and leave it right there, but I won't because you're entitled to your opinion of others' opinions. I was just relaying some shared/overlapping thoughts that I recall some critics have regarding the differences between the three divas that they have brought up or brushed upon in various, random music reviews, some of which I agree with, and some of which I am yet to grasp where they exactly are coming from. The post was not meant to establish those points as facts - clearly there are some people in this board alone who already disagree with some of them. And that's fine.

As for me downplaying Celine's abilities, well, the woman has clearly earned her spot in the pantheon of supreme singers, regardless of what I or anyone says, so I don't see what "downplaying" them just to make Mariah look better can possibly accomplish, especially in a Mariah message board. I do enjoy her songs and own several of her albums. The woman has always been more capable of belting circles around Mariah, especially these days. She has the stamina, discipline, work ethic and actual voice to still do that. But to me her performances have more often than not struck me as bit more on the mechanical side, such that at times it's almost as if she catches herself mid-sentence, realizes this and resorts to overdoing stuff just to keep things interesting. Not that Mariah can't be that way as well, but Mariah seems better at concealing it. As for Celine's passion, if by that you mean more of an eagerness to impress, then sure. Also, Mariah does have the whistle register and is still somehow capable of accessing it these days, so I won't set that aside, since I was referring to range as the scope of notes she can hit and not necessarily the ease she can hit each note within it with, I'd say she technically still has the wider range, just without Celine's ease of access.

What puts me off about Celine's performances is not the same as what annoys you. I've accepted her tendency to overdo things the same way I have learned to deal with Whitney's proclivities for loudness and bombast. For me, it's actually more of her tone. It's polished and unique, but can be exhausting to listen to track after track after track, especially in her standard 17-track albums at 4-5 minutes/song. You said that Mariah's voice is perfect - not too much of this or that. That's my point. Celine's tonal quality is not as interesting as Mariah's, and that, coupled with her extremely safe, very MOR brand of pop and lack of variation in vocal delivery (she does try though), often yields bland(er) results.

Re: Celine vs. Mariah (92,425) (92,437) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Revisionist rubbish. You seek to downplay Celine's ability and appeal under the guise of erudition in order to make Mariah look better and the agenda completely transparent. Celine's voice may not have the same tonal quality as Mariah but she is technically a wizard and, also, to portray her singing as calculated, i.e. without passion, is absurd. If anything she puts too much passion into it so as to make it cringeworthy. And as for range, remove Mariah's whistle register and their ranges were pretty much the same and Celine now beats Mariah in that respect. You only have to watch Natural Woman at Diva's Live to know that. Revisionist rubbish.

Mariah airplay #1s (92,435) by Randy from USA
I know that no one listens to the radio anymore. But as a little bit of a Billboard Chart Nerd, I knew MC was more sales than airplay when it comes to her singles. I decided to see what #1s she had based on radio airplay but I was shocked when I looked up her record on Billboard Airplay #1s. It's interesting to note what songs made it to number one, what songs didn't (No All I Want for Christmas? No Touch My Body?) and how long her number ones stayed there.

Babyface (92,434) by Bobby A from United States
I am sure hoping MC reaches out to Babyface this year for collaboration. They wrote such beautiful songs together. Never Forget You was just classic Babyface at the height of his songwriting career. Two years later he gave the world some of his best work on the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack. Melt Away always left me wanting to hear more on Daydream. Every Time I Close My Eyes was a perfect gem that showcased his impeccable songwriting skills and MC's immpecable vocal arrangements. Who else wants another Babyface collaboration?

Honestly, I'd never heard the original it was sampled from so maybe that's why I don't mind it.

Mariah (92,432) by We are Lambily from USA
Lol, I hate when fans can't enjoy a new song just because of the fact that it resembles another song. Here is a beautiful quote from Mariah. "Sometimes critics get a little bit cynical 'oh it sounds like this oh it sounds like that' and yes it does have that, I wrote both of those songs, I have a style of writing."

Way to go Mariah. And congrats to getting into the Hall of Fame for songwriting induction. You are a musical genius. Your voice and your ability to write 18 of your 19 hits is incredible. You are on a whole other level. Love always Tameka Walker.

Re: Celine vs Mariah (92,428) (92,430) by Bill from the UK
I'm enjoying all these posts about the vocal trinity. I only own a few albums of Whitney and Celine, so I can't speak for all their material, but I do find they often stick to the same gear. All Whitney's ballads begin with the same keyboard instrument and end with the huge belt, and Celine, whilst technically a great vocalist, does come across as awfully bland at times.

Having said that, I don't think anyone will ever sing The Star Spangled Banner better than Whitney, and I agree that the song Fly by Celine on the Falling Into You album is very moving.

Re: Boy (I Need You) (92,411) (92,429) by jaker20 from US
The best way to experience Mariah is creating your own playlists across multiple albums. Some albums flow well on its own, but we're talking 30 years of discography and many of the songs are classics on their own. And with such a diverse discography some songs will speak to you differently than how they were originally intended. I myself have 5 Mariah playlists and I grouped Boy I Need You with the mid to low tempo R&Bs which includes:
(Boy) I Need You
Breakdown
Clown
The Roof
X-Girlfriend
Loverboy (some say it's trash but I love it)
If We
Last Night A DJ
Ger Your Number
Say Somethin'
