Do you think something is dropping on April 12th or goodies in her store at least? MC eluded to something special for its anniversary during a recent social media post on the last day of her Vegas shows.

I gotta break it to you delicately, [beep]. Live Nation can't book anything without Mariah's approval. The idea that they locked in shows seven years in advance for her? Completely ridiculous. If she wanted time off, she could absolutely turn down any offers, no one's forcing her on stage. After her breakdown, she made it crystal clear that taking time off when needed was nonnegotiable, no questions asked. For whatever reason, she's choosing to keep milking the cow while the milk keeps flowing, and that's totally fine, just sing, put on a great show, and at least act like you wanna be there.

Branding/brand deals (108,255)
by Norman from USA
| |
|
|
To piggyback on the RA, Randy, and Will discussion: Does anyone have any brands they think would be a realistic fit for Mariah to pursue? She doesn't have a proven track record with anything per se, but I don't think it means there isn't anything out there for her.
Also, I'm not sure what her personal branding is anymore. She's being herself which is fantastic, but it's still a business and there should be something to point to outside of Christmas. Staying "booked and busy" is obviously every artist wishes to have, but I would wager something more elevated is needed for her caliber celebrity. More elevated but still accessible, you know?
I think Randy is right about the make-up and perfume routes being saturated. And as much as I like the Black Irish, no one goes out on the town drinking that like vodka and tequila.
I initially thought of shoes, but then remembered the stint on HSN with the clothing and shoes. I'd suggest a brand deal over her own line. Maybe a Louboutin or Jimmy Choo heel named after her, something she wears in a high concept music video (remember those? I'm aging myself). Something like that but fresher and less on the nose than what I just described.
Thoughts? Hey, what about golf clubs for laughs?

The effects of a different style of singing (108,252)
by Bobby A from United States

I was watching Ledisi perform on the NAACP awards show. One thing you can say about Ledisi is that the way [she] sings now is how she has always sang. She has never incorporated any type of acrobatics or crazy riffs or runs in her singing style. So, I am wondering what made MC start singing in that breathy style of singing in 1997. Although it may have added some depth to a specific song, I feel it may have been too much for her young voice in the late 1990s. MC's voice was still young and may not have been strong enough at that time to sing in that breathy style and sing in her head voice too in the same song.

You have the impressive talent of pulling facts and half truths out of your behind like there's no tomorrow. Mariah doesn't have to do anything she doesn't want to. She learned her lesson very well in the '90s. Her agreement with Live Nation isn't some ironclad obligation forcing her to be on tour nonstop as if she were a slave.
This isn't like a traditional record deal where artists get cash advances they have to pay back. Even if it were structured that way, she still has to consent to whatever is booked. Live Nation doesn't own Mariah, she has full control over her schedule and can take a break whenever she wants without issue.
So, stop with the "Me I'm Mariah, a poor damsel in distress" narrative. Mariah has more control over her career now than ever before, so no, she's not forced to be there, she chooses to be there. Once she agrees and signs the contract, she is contractually obligated to fulfill the terms, including any concerts or tours outlined in the agreement.

I don't think MC is hurting for money, but we all know her net worth has taken a 20 percent hit during the past 6 years without a new album and a huge world tour. I forgot to mention this in my last post that I would love to see MC on an ABC or NBC comedy show episode next fall season. I did enjoy MC in Wisegirls as Raychel.

I didn't know she signed with Live Nation. What bothers me about that is she's never been much of a performer. Even when she had the voice. I get record companies aren't handing out piles of cash to sign her but what about her past royalties? They're not enough to keep her afloat? I remember when she and Nick filed for divorce and some of the financials leaked. It surprised me that MC only made $4 million one year. For me, that would set me for retirement. But for her, the overhead, dahing. Trey Lorenz's sparkly blazer dry cleaning bills, Mary Ann Tatum's vocal coach studio rent, Evian with gold flakes for the dogs, Kristopher Buckle's contouring techniques copyright use, the squire who holds her iPhone, the squire who holds her Android, the rhinestone encrusted Suburban she is carried around in. She needs to seriously scale it back or sell her catalogue in one of those ridiculous publishing deals, if she plans to live at her present level. Maybe she should've married Packer. I kid. I kid.

MC needs something else to enhance her career instead of perfoming. I would love to see her partner with a cosmetics or clothing company using an original song sung by another artist. I would even be elated if she took some time off from performing for 1 year. Plus, Beyond the Gates on CBS is going to keep me glued to the TV with this hot new daytime soap opera cast. I have never seem a more attractive and talented cast on new TV program. I can't wait until Monday.

I just don't see the fire. Mariah has been like this off and on since Stella. It would scare me more if she moved around the stage, had banter and wasn't singing along to her own voice in the background. I 100% get she doesn't want to be there but that's common knowledge and people will still go see her because she's an icon. My concern is it does reek of financial trouble and not necessarily, I love to perform so much I don't know when to bow out gracefully. Mariah is fine. She is gigging to make sure she can keep Kristopher Buckle, Mary Ann Tatum, Trey Lorenz, Daniel Moore, the umbrella holder, the rental in LA, the G5, the upkeep on the NYC pad and the house in the Bahamas taken care of. I don't see Whitney Houston's decline. I see more of a Joan Crawford, Judy Garland thing here. "I'm Mariah, dahling. I can't be broke."

Lol. I love your optimism, but just no, [that] just reminded me of that hideous "Fall in love at Christmas" song with Khalid and Kirk Franklin (ugh). I also really don't like Kim Burrell, her style of Gospel, [definitely] don't like her [voice] either. She's only known in Gospel [because] she's capable of doing riffs and runs and honestly, I always feel that's overrated, I prefer straight singing with a little bit of riffs and runs only when the song calls for it, or the melody gets lost. Reason why I don't dig Jazmine Sullivan, nor Beyoncé's singing either. Mariah needs a vocal coach who understands whistle register voices, they work differently from regular voices. Then the bad habits - [bubbly], breaking into whistles even when talking, talking too much etc. I guarantee you, she would see changes positively.

I have always wondered something about one of the lines in "Loverboy". When Mariah sings "When he invites me over, I come every time," did she mean she goes over to hang with him every time she is invited or does she mean that he brings her to orgasm every time? She was dating Luis at the time the song was recorded, so if it's the latter, he must have been loving her down.
The songs lyrics give me the same vibe as the "Honey" lyrics where I am unsure if Mariah's being intentionally provocative or doing her coquettish "I'm Mary Poppins" shtick and playing dumb about the double entendres lol.

Terna, I was thinking today that MC should try a more spiritual church method to improve her voice. Gospel artist and pastor Kim Burrell could help MC by getting her to do a couple of church performances after a month of strengthening her voice with her Kim Burrell could help MC improve her voice with some old church hymns without all of the studio gimmicks. Because He Lives, Lead Me Oh Lord and I Surrender My All are the perfect hymn songs for improving your vocal skills. I am just thinking how I love to hear MC sing gospel songs.

Honestly, I want Mariah to try a voice coach and speech therapist first before considering surgery. Build her main voice back (no whistle register - neglect this register for a while, it is parasitic on the main voice). A change of lifestyle choices too can make a world of difference. Get disciplined like your life depends on it, because honestly it does, the "Mariah Carey" brand is mainly her voice. Cut out bad habits (if any) she picked up along the way, that came with the fame (bubbly, late nights partying, smoking etc). To be able to go into the studio and wow with one-takes or her ability to step on stage and command the entire show as she once used to with just singing is going to required real discipline and determination cos she's older now.

Agreed Randy - vocal ability, financial stresses and aging (remember all neurological disorders only worsen with age) are her main problems but being with Tanaka in whatever capacity he was had helped keep her spark alive. Big or small, his departure is a part of the puzzle I think along with her other big problems. It will be interesting to see whenever MC16 does come out, how this period of her life is reflected in it.

Mariah's lipping is so obvious now, and people are going in on her in the YouTube comments. She really needs to step back from touring and work with a vocal coach. Like Terna said, it's going to take serious discipline to get her voice back in shape. She should stop touring until Christmas.
It kind of feels like we're watching a different version of what happened with Whitney. Mariah fought so hard to stay true to herself, but now she's almost trapped in this diva persona. She used to talk about wanting the street cred that Mary J. Blige had, she started being raw and unapologetic. But now? It's like she's just withdrawn into this shell.
It's true that Tanaka seemed to have been a source of joy and normalcy in her life.

I believe MC will be taking a break from performances after the Vegas shows. She needs a break to relax and finish MC16. I wouldn't mind a couple of EP vinyl releases like It's A Wrap, Fantasy, and Honey while we wait. I hope something is planned while we wait. I am still waiting on I Want To Know What Love Is the remixes to get an official vinyl release. I wouldn't mind some current R&B male artists like October London and Jacquees to join MC on some of her JD classics for special remixes.

In the article about the new song there is no mention that the song that MC did with Barbra and Ariana is produced by Walter Afanasieff. Instead it just says the project (meaning the album) is produced by Walter and two other producers. For all we know the song that MC is on is produced by Linda Ronstadt or Peter Asher. Also I heard from my friend who works with people who work with Mariah that there is no new album scheduled for this year at all. Apparently the earliest a new studio album would be ready by is late 2026 or early 2027. My prediction is actually it will be ten years since her last one before we hear a complete studio album. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it's important to give her space and it's better that she gets it just right because in all probability it very well will be her last.

I don't think she was ever in love with Tommy. I think she was in love with Luis and she was in love with Nick. The rest are companionships. Her issue right now is what her issue has been since birth. Insecurity. It is hard being in the world eye when you are considered one of the best vocalists who have ever lived and are having problems with your voice. It is hard when you come out and meet your idols Aretha, Patti, Olivia Newton John and Diana. Now you are their age and the girls that are popular are on the charts and winning awards are Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo. MC hates touring but needs the money to keep the umbrella holder and her three homes. Tanaka may have been a comfort but he's not the reason she's in pieces. MCs real problem is that she is under pressure about vocal ability, aging and finances.

MC doing the Superbowl (108,171)

After that lame performance from Kenderick Lamar, there will never be another rapper who will get the chance to do the Superbowl half-time show. His performance was horrible. It was something you would see Pepsi sponsor at a summer concert series. I agree with Randy. MC would have more engaging that what Kenderick Lamar gave us for 13 minutes. I am so sick of his beef with Drake. Lady Gaga or Beyonce will be the Superbowl half-time performer in 2026.

Ok. After Kendrick Lamar we need to revisit MC doing the Superbowl. I'm not a Kendrick Lamar fan (not my generation) so I was bored but this proves now MC could really do the halftime show. She can lipsync her way through it, look gorgeous and do her sway to Emotions, Dreamlover, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, Honey, Heartbreaker, It's Like That, Touch My Body and Obsessed with sick dancers and of course a thousand costume changes. And if she had to do slow songs she could do Hero, We Belong Together to close out. Tell me MC wouldn't have all of America rocking to that playlist. I got excited writing it. But as a fan my secret wish playlist would be Someday, Fantasy, Always Me My Baby, Honey, The Roof, Breakdown, Heartbreaker, Loverboy, Side Effects, You Don't Know What To Do and GTFO - close out with Anytime You Need A Friend, Right to Dream, Languishing and Never Forget You. Her catalogue is sick.

Edward I dunno. I think the music is what the audience will respond to. That set list is killer. Put Mariah on a pedestal and let the set, dancers, lasers, pyrotechnics do the work. Again let me remind you. Emotions, Dreamlover, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, Honey, Heartbreaker, It's Like That, Touch My Body and Obsessed. That's crazy and then to end it with Hero, We Belong Together. It's got massive sing along appeal. Sure we're tired of those songs but the general public would love it. And I think this would help undo some of the thaw her out November 1 mentality.
