It wasn't performing as they expected (the debut went to number 1 so a tough act to follow), so in order to boost sales of the album, the physical single release of CLG was shelved in the US. The logic was that anyone that was going to buy the single would go and buy the album instead. That didn't happen and annoying Mariah missed out of what would have been her 6th consecutive number 1. I'm glad it wasn't included on Daydream. Same with Slipping Away. I absolutely love SA, but again SA doesn't fit with the whole vibe of Daydream. Each song flows into the next. Daydream (110,955) by Bill from the UK "Open Arms" is indeed stunning and breath taking in its simplicity and understated beauty. I love the way she made it sound so "Mariah", in that it went from this 80s rock power ballad anthem to a gorgeous moving restrained ballad. "Slipping Away" is an amazing song, I don't think any will disagree, but I always loved its underground status it had. I agree I'm not sure it would have fitted in with the other tracks on Daydream. As for "One Night", a hard no and a hard pass from me. I was a bit shocked that was a Daydream outtake as it seemed more "E=MC2" to me. Daydream (110,953) by Edward from USA "Open Arms" is one of Mariah's finest covers. The track that really deserved a spot on "Daydream" is "One Night". While "Slipping Away" is a great song, I don't think it would've blended well sonically with the rest of the album. Suggesting that "Slipping Away" should've replaced "Open Arms" is sacrilegious and a clear violation of the sacred "Daydream" code. Penny Ford - I lose control (110,918) by Bill from the UK I Lose Control is amazing and a long time ago an "AI" edit was floating, but it got embargoed to the point that people thought it was actually Mariah's demo, as it included high notes and ad libs not in the Penny version. It sounded incredible and every day I curse myself for not downloading a copy when I had the chance. It was originally intended as Mariah's launch single, according to rumours. Everyone loved it but Mariah couldn't stand it, saying it was "stupid" and a "cheesy little uptempo ditty that I hated so much". This is why I think she never worked with NMW again, as she also didn't enjoy the "I Don't Wanna Cry" experience either, saying she wouldn't have titled the song that and that it went in a different direction to what she envisaged (more "Careless Whisper" vibe originally). In the liner notes for the debut album, she thanks her then-manager Don Ienner "for not making me 'lose control'". Apparently he was the only one who had her back around not including the song on the album at all, let alone it being the lead single, and advocated with Mariah for "Vision of Love" instead. Walden had reached out to Carey saying he still had the master tape for if she wanted to include it on The Rarities, but she never got back to him. There was then a period when TOTP insisted everybody perform live. I assume the studio was moved to one that could better accommodate that. It was during the peak of Euro Pop so it was hilarious seeing the club singers trying to recreate their songs live, some I remember being terrible. Apparently, when the show started in 1964, the British Musicians' Union had strict rules about live performances on television. To avoid conflicts over performance rights and royalties, the show used pre-recorded backing tracks, and artists mimed along. But yeah, Mariah did lip-sync during her "prime" years. I remember one of the Open Arms performances was mimed in Europe, probably because of jet lag. That would've been an exception though, not the rule. The videos, the tours, the non-stop global promotion. You can be the biggest talent in the room and it still won't matter if you cross the wrong man. And that man was Tommy. The CEO. Once personal lines were crossed, the machine turned on her. From that point on, neither numbers nor talent could protect her. I get that the Grammys have always followed a certain playbook. They tend to snub mainstream pop acts in favor of what they see as more "serious" or "artistic" choices. But let's be honest. She deserved at least one win. Pop Vocal Performance, bare minimum. There was no competition. Her going home empty-handed wasn't just a miss, it was wrong. And it will always be unjustified. When something feels that personal in a business this political, it probably is. Just look at the timeline. The Grammys happened in February 1996. Then the Always Be My Baby remix dropped in March 1996. These signals to us that Mariah had just been made freshly aware, by Da Brat, that none of this was okay. We should be able to get french fries. She was at peak resentment, like a teenager pushing against the walls, desperate for freedom. And we shouldn't pretend the Grammy voting is made up of respected musicians either. It's insiders. Industry people. Moguls and their friends. Most likely interconnected with the same people who were at that dinner where Mottola canceled Thanksgiving. And if he had the power to cancel an entire holiday, do you really think he couldn't tug a few in voting board? By the way, there's no direct quote from Mariah confirming that Mottola promised her Grammy wins or that she changed outfits for each award she expected to win, either. This is rather the one, that's a complete nonsense. I would argue that the humbling and derailment of Mariah began as early as Tommy's extra psychotic episodes pre-divorce. The machine didn't wait for her to spiral. It moved the moment she showed signs of no longer being manageable. His message was clear: "I have power here, you don't. Do you want Grammys? It's very apparent Tommy infiltrated the board in '96 and wanted to humiliate the crap out of her since they were on the brink of divorce. Though the Grammys are desperate to save their credibility now, they thought making Beyoncé the most awarded in 2023 would reel in ratings, but it backfired. The general public's sentiment was, "Nah, she good, but she not that good." It worked for them having her until around 2015 imho, but everyone truly woke up after she won Best Country Album last year. Everyone thought, "Okay, so sponsored and paid by Jay-Z," which we all know is true. It's so clearly her retaliation for being snubbed in the Country Music Awards, so they called their friends up in the Grammy board. It was a pathetic move though, it's sadly backfired and now most of America think the Grammys is a joke. It turns out all the small towns throughout the nation know the authentic country sound and America is not just LA and New York. Anywho, MC did surprisingly get an invite to the Grammys to present for Miley, so maybe they've cooled off on Mariah and are finally ready to develop a decent relationship with her. Even with treatment you will still experience lows and highs. Behind the highs and lows is the sheer effort to function and that effort can be exhausting. If you look at Mariah's presentation during an interview, I'd guess that she might be using a medication called lithium. Look it up and see the side effects. This has slowly turned into apprehension with every misstep of the new album's roll out. TD was okay-ish, SS is just lackluster. So far for the songs. With every performance and interview Mariah has done there is a decline in energy. I watch with disbelief and I am worried. What is going on? In the most recent interviews she looks stiff and uncomfortable with very little more than tangents and/or gibberish uttered. Mariah used to talk passionately about her work especially when launching new material into the world. All I see now is a pale shadow of that woman. Almost as if she is not there, not feeling it, not caring one bit. The performances are not much better. Yes, she never was a dancer and doesn't need to be but of lately she just kind of stands there with more focus on the monitors (checking which bit to lipsync) than making some interaction with her audience. It fills me with sadness as I love this woman to the moon and back and her music has had a profound meaning in my life for over 20 years. Her hips look like they were enhanced as well, but it's Hollywood, and this is the norm. I would say Mariah never really overdid anything, except for the boobs. She knew Nick loved them, so she consistently made them bigger and flaunted them for revenge. Stella famously said, "She just got her boobs done," but she didn't blow up her lips like Christina or Carrie Underwood, and she didn't do anything extreme like a Michael Jackson nose job. She always kind of harmonized with her natural beauty. At most, she may have had a non-invasive injection on the sides of her button nose to make it more subtle. She also has perfectly crafted veneers and a tiny bit of Botox here and there, but she still very much has a face that's hers. I can't remember where I saw it, but it was revealed that Mariah follows an all-blue food diet to preserve her youth. Her beautician said she has an extensive beauty regimen that involves getting three facials every week. With her money, she has access to top-tier beauty products. She really takes beauty seriously. I remember that right after she gave birth, she said, "We gotta stay pretty," while getting ready to take pictures with her newborns. Part of the main problem "OG's" have is Mariah's leaning towards black music and succeeding at it too - R&B/Hiphop specifically. That's why they will always have a problem with this "New Mariah", so to speak, because that Tommy version was molded to cater to a white audience. Let's call it as it is. However, that's not the real her, never really was to begin with - check "Vision of Love", that's a singer who's main and only influence is black music, gospel, R&B and hip-hop (check the debut album, isn't she rapping on "Prisoner"). What's mind boggling about these OG fans is that new Mariah (true Mariah) has now been out so to speak, much longer (all caps) than hairbangs Mariah (Music Box and Daydream) and she has pretty much remained the same since, yet they're still hooked on the curated Tommy's vision of her and think that somehow, someday she's gonna go back to pop and that image.
