About Bill from the UK: I love Mariah more than you do.

London Daydream Tour Attendee.

Daydream (110,984) by Bill from the UK
So the fate of "Can't Let Go" was tied to the Emotions album. It wasn't performing as they expected (the debut went to number 1 so a tough act to follow), so in order to boost sales of the album, the physical single release of CLG was shelved in the US. The logic was that anyone that was going to buy the single would go and buy the album instead. That didn't happen and annoying Mariah missed out of what would have been her 6th consecutive number 1.

Daydream (110,969) by Bill from the UK
I agree, the intro to One Night is as good as any of her other iconic intros, but then it just sounds like one big mess beyond that point with really immature lyrics etc. It would have really thrown the album off kilter. I would have maybe kept the intro only as an interlude to "Side 2", but the rest of the song can go spin for all I care. Daydream really is a masterstroke from beginning to end.

Daydream (110,955) by Bill from the UK
"Open Arms" is indeed stunning and breath taking in its simplicity and understated beauty. I love the way she made it sound so "Mariah", in that it went from this 80s rock power ballad anthem to a gorgeous moving restrained ballad.

"Slipping Away" is an amazing song, I don't think any will disagree, but I always loved its underground status it had. I agree I'm not sure it would have fitted in with the other tracks on Daydream. As for "One Night", a hard no and a hard pass from me. I was a bit shocked that was a Daydream outtake as it seemed more "E=MC2" to me. Adding it to the album would have detracted from its sophistication in my view.

Kai Cenat's stream (110,949) by Bill from the UK
I couldn't watch it because it was so infuriatingly bad. Mariah looked great and I'm sure she represented herself well, but I'm guess I'm out of touch as the host was incoherent and an absolute unprofessional mess as was the others that materialised. I gave up after the Heartbreaker acapella when not one of them knew the word "incessantly". An absolute car crash and way below the standard Mariah should be at.

Penny Ford - I lose control (110,918) by Bill from the UK
I Lose Control is amazing and a long time ago an "AI" edit was floating, but it got embargoed to the point that people thought it was actually Mariah's demo, as it included high notes and ad libs not in the Penny version. It sounded incredible and every day I curse myself for not downloading a copy when I had the chance.

It was originally intended as Mariah's launch single, according to rumours. Everyone loved it but Mariah couldn't stand it, saying it was "stupid" and a "cheesy little uptempo ditty that I hated so much". This is why I think she never worked with NMW again, as she also didn't enjoy the "I Don't Wanna Cry" experience either, saying she wouldn't have titled the song that and that it went in a different direction to what she envisaged (more "Careless Whisper" vibe originally).

In the liner notes for the debut album, she thanks her then-manager Don Ienner "for not making me 'lose control'". Apparently he was the only one who had her back around not including the song on the album at all, let alone it being the lead single, and advocated with Mariah for "Vision of Love" instead.

Walden had reached out to Carey saying he still had the master tape for if she wanted to include it on The Rarities, but she never got back to him.

I wonder how differently things would have panned out? A one hit wonder? A no hit wonder? The mind boggles.

Super Bowl (110,858) by Bill from the UK
Top of the Pops had a long period where artists lip synced purely I believe for technical reasons. There was then a period when TOTP insisted everybody perform live. I assume the studio was moved to one that could better accommodate that. It was during the peak of Euro Pop so it was hilarious seeing the club singers trying to recreate their songs live, some I remember being terrible. And then it was an "either or" situation, throughout the late 90s, then almost everyone lipped after that point.

Anytime You Need a Friend

Super Bowl (110,849) by Bill from the UK
Mariah started lip syncing in 1994, towards the end of the year. The first I can remember is Without You at a Christmas special of Top of the Pops, then it was just downhill from that point on.

ODB passed away in 2004 sweetheart.

[Webmaster: They were fantasizing about Mariah performing at the SuperBowl in 1996. ODB was still alive.]

MC the GOAT (110,797) by Bill from the UK
I think we all agree Mariah deserved some acknowledgement that night, due to it being the pinnacle of her career. But there's no point us still being bitter about a 30 year old event and still blaming Tommy, who had nothing to do with how that night unfolded. All it did was make Mariah realise she didn't need him.

Mariah was still supported massively by Sony during the separation and after the divorce. I mean look at the budget the Heartbreaker video had. The videos, the tours, the non-stop global promotion. The issue was Mariah moved away from the adult contemporary audience that she curated during the beginning of her career, so her sales dipped, and she blamed the label (like Michael Jackson did). Rainbow was not Daydream. Invincible was not Thriller.

MC the GOAT (110,776) by Bill from the UK
That's nonsense. Show me the evidence Tommy infiltrated the Grammys to sabotage his then-wife and biggest label asset. That's right, there isn't any. In fact, both Tommy and Mariah were furious as Tommy had assured her she would clean up, to the extent he arranged for her to wear a different dress/outfit for when she collected each award. Mariah was shunned because 1) the competition was genuinely tough that year and 2) the industry felt Mariah got a lot of special treatment and wanted to prove Tommy couldn't always get what he wanted. It worked both ways; after she left Sony he used all his influence to derail her career. Whilst at Sony he did everything he could to make her a success.

I Don't (110,702) by Bill from the UK
Whilst I agree the video for I Don't is hideous, the song itself I never minded that much. In fact, it could easily have been sequenced into Caution, along with Unforgettable. It would have helped beef the album out a bit and sonically both those tracks work with the other songs in my opinion.

Much how I would rather have had Almost Home and Triumphant replace the two cut and paste duets on Me I Am Mariah But Also Mimi The Elusive Chanteuse Which Is What Everybody Calls Me Honest.

Try it on me (110,642) by Bill from the UK
When MC and Whitney did that "same dress" skit at that awards ceremony and Mariah said "try it on me" as she ripped her dress off to reveal a shorter one underneath, what does that phrase mean? I've never heard anyone ever say it before or since in any similar context, and Mariah seems to think it's one of the wittiest things she's ever said. I know I'm being dense, so can someone explain?

Mariah's best videos (110,637) by Bill from the UK
Good list. All the Butterfly videos were chef’s kiss, but particularly The Roof. Mariah in the limo, with the rain beating down outside, the flashbacks to the roof top party, the sudden need to drench herself in the pouring rain just to relive that moment/splendour. Superb.

Dreamlover (110,586) by Bill from the UK
I'm listening to Dreamlover and comparing against Type Dangerous and Sugar Sweet... there is absolutely no comparison. Dreamlover is just a perfect pop song, one of the best things she ever did. Her voice, the harmonies, the backgrounds, the melody... it is perfect. Oh Mariah come back please.

It’s tiiiime... to let the children know (110,569) by Bill from the UK
I know enough to know it's really ill advised to drink copious amounts of alcohol whilst taking any bipolar medication, yet Mariah continues to do so. So her current bizarre state is likely down to her amplifying her symptoms and any medication side effects by drinking.

It’s tiiiime... to let the children know (110,563) by Bill from the UK
According to Mariah's own testimony she has been treating her bipolar since 2001, so no, I don't buy that her current presentation is simply down to her taking her medication and regulating her mood, sorry.

"Mirage" (110,545) by Bill from the UK
Agree, well said. Every time I raise this point I get a reprimand (usually warranted), but there is something clearly wrong with Mariah. It is not all smiles and sunshine, nothing is fine and dandy, and she is not slaying nor is she giving. She is vanishing, drifting away.

Mariah at Sandringham (110,538) by Bill from the UK
A YouTube account went through the footage to find the live moments. 3 minutes in total. An improvement over her usual 2 minutes. But Mariah has nothing to prove, is preserving her voice, has nodules, had a malfunctioning monitor and ear pierce, was wearing a tight corset, hadn’t had 10 hours sleep, and was suffering from terrifying and debilitating stage fright. Slay queen.

The evolution of Mariah Carey (110,201) by Bill from the UK
It is hilarious isn't it. I don't think it's on YouTube anymore, but there was a short clip of her saying the "I would never lip sync" line that then cut to her performance of Boy (I Need You) on Top of the Pops, where she completely forgot there was a high note at the end and tried to mask it terribly. Brilliant edit lol.
