I remember that interview with Tabitha. She was so rude to Mariah. The rumors about Mariah disliking an artist Walter was working with was all a part of Tommy's smear campaign. They fell out because of creative differences and his continued loyalty to Tommy. He should have stayed loyal to Mariah since she decided she wanted to work exclusively with him after the Ben debacle. She's done just fine without him. Her music became less schmaltz after ending their professional relationship. He made comments that she was trying to be Mary J. Blidge which was and is untrue. She just wanted to make R&B music and incorporate Hip-hop into her music which she started doing the Daydream era. Which in my opinion made her even more popular and added depth to her music.

I remember seeing this interview. They start talking of Walter at around 6:27. Tabitha asked Mariah about the rumors of her and Walter fighting. There were different rumors. I remember one was of Samantha Cole with whom Walter worked with and Mariah didn't like. At 9:10, Mariah says about "like when you tell a friend something and they blab it to the world". I remember that Walter said in some interview that the Honey video was an "FU" to Tommy. That's when I saw Walter was being more loyal to Tommy and Mariah was upset.

Mariah only needs collaborators because she can't write music. Walter himself said she would sing the cords and melodies to him and he would play them and it was a back and forth thing. He was awarded his Grammy's because Tommy used all of his clout to reward him for ending his professional relationship with Mariah. During her time working with Walter, she wrote all of the lyrics to her songs by herself. She's right she shouldn't have had to give away 50% of the royalties to him because he wrote the music, melody, and cords she sang to him. Tommy's actions allowed Mariah to leave Sony even though she still owed them one more album.

Tommy and his henchmen (47,739)
by B from USA

Vanity Fair did an expose on Tommy that depicted him as a ruthless thug that used his mafia connections to take control of Columbia and Sony. The writer of the article described Mariah as a prisoner in their Bedford mansion which Mariah, herself, has described as Sing, Sing. Sing, Sing is a nod to the infamous prison and because that's all she was allowed to do there. His smear campaign against Mariah included using his mafia connections and Payola to keep DJ's from playing her music, spreading false and negative information to the tabloids, and having Murder Inc. create two songs for JLo. It was basically one song and its remix. The original version of I'm Real used the same Firecracker loop (sample) that Mariah used for the original version of Loverboy and the remix was a ripoff of If We which was a duet between Mariah and Ja Rule. This was confirmed by Irv Gotti himself.

Yeah. I am 50/50 on your concept of Mariah working with people she has feuded with to promote her Christmas music or boost her reputation. It shows your thinking. However I don't see her working with easily 90% of the people you mentioned. Wendy is a hypocrite who has never had Mariah on her show. Mariah went to all the other talk shows but Wendy. I think Wendy is just bitter for that reason. As far as Walter, Tommy, and Nick definitely not. Maybe Walter. He seems open to work with her. We should remember, Mariah is in control of her career. Rightfully she's earned it but her relationship with these people have been altered. Usually clashes of egoes and music competiveness with Mariah usually winning is why. She wins because she very rarely walks past someone and turns back to see what they are thinking or saying. She never reads tabloids and she knows who to talk to and who not. She owns her reputation. She continues walking to the next destination without being bothered. It's like she is on a different playing field. I like it but people become envious of her reputation and untouched ego so I see what you mean Baby.

Mariah always says the creativity of the lambs is unparalleled. I would have to agree 100%. The only ones who come even close to rivalling us lambs, as of late, are The Walter & Tommy Fangurls feat. The Nickelodeons. According to them, we should treat Tommy and Walter more fairly than they themselves have historically treated Mariah. Uhm. With that kind of reasoning Mariah should also reach out to Samantha Cole, Katy Perry, Sandra Bernhardt, Eminem, Kelly Price, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Cameron Diaz, JLo, Ja Rule and Irv Gotti and announce on Wendy Williams, that she wants all of them to be in a remake of AYNAF. Walter will of course produce the song(without Mariah, like he deserves), Nick will direct the (straight to video) short film and Tommy will release the single under his new label: SingSing Records. It's bound to be this years Christmas Hot 100 Stone-Groove-Smash-Hit-Wonder. Oh Lord.

Still I wish that you and I'd forgive "each other" (47,734)
by Andrew from UK

Tommy's sabotage is well-documented. The guy is a bit unpleasant to say the least. I just wonder how the "posse" see it? Do they believe Mariah betrayed them? Do they consider her ungrateful for what they believe they gave to her? I have thought it sometimes when she makes comments about being "forced into jean shorts in a field" etc. This stuff made her career appealing and stellar. Yet the business management of it is portrayed as evil, usw. Perhaps it would have been better to have just acknowledge their assistance and move on. I don't think she was probably entirely innocent. What happened after the Grammys in '96? The point is: yes, Walter omits a lot of Mariah's contribution to the compositions or rather portrays her as his assistant a lot. However I don't recall many times where Walter gets credit from Mariah. Nor anyone other than JD for that matter. So as in everything there's a flip side to the coin. N.b. this is observation and speculation, this is not a condemnation.

Since some people are on the topic of Walter A and songwriting credits I guess I'll share this. If you look at the Daydream album booklet there is a certain part in the booklet that says who wrote what and for almost all of the songs it says Mariah wrote them herself.

My all (47,730)
by David F from Mexico

I kindly think that "My all in Bangkok" was well sung, she wanted to make the end similar to the around the world video you know from the 90's tour, but she yet had to slow the voice to the minimum and she didn't she moved it up. I think her last break up plays in her head and believe me when you love somebody so much it's hard to let go, that part is no longer your support. We have to put ourselves together. It's hard so damn hard but the kids keep her going thank God. Because a good lover keeps all the memories but suddenly in order to let go that person we have to erase them until we hurt no more. Anyway Mariah is dealing with a lot seeing her music banned from radio, it's unbelievable because she made very good songs and what is happening? But she keeps on doing other things like these new Christmas shows and the very successful Asia tour, thank God for that. But a lot of fans are seeing what goes within the USA music industry. This woman has talent in her hands, brain, and voice and those are the blessings that she may be hated for.

NYC show (47,728)

My 6 year old daughter loves Mariah's twins and is hoping Roc and Roe make an appearance on stage for the Christmas shows if they are really happening. Lol. It's funny she is only 6 yet all she says is how cute Monroe is and what a cute voice Roc has. Lol. Like she is so much older than them. They are little celebrities in their own right and it must be such a special bonus for people at her shows that get to see these two miracles.

I am in for the NYC Christmas show. I can't tell you how excited I am about this, especially if this is an annual thing. My birthday is Christmas Eve and always have a special ace for everything all Christmas. This would be the best birthday gift. I would love to introduce my daughter to a Mariah show this way too. We were going to go to a Radio City Christmas show and I was in the process of looking for tickets, but hey who better to get you in the Christmas mood than the absolute queen of Christmas herself? Forget that other show. Michele what part of PA are you from? I am near the Scranton area.

I agree with your post on Mariah not being able to let go of certain lip synced parts of her songs. Like, the first parts of the choruses of My All. Those parts are really easy for her to sing, as shown by her hitting the exact notes in later performances. Also, in Hero, when she's singing the long note in "the way", it's completely unnecessary because she sings the same note in the bridge when she sings "tear them away". I think what it really boils down to is that issue where Mariah is not confident enough to actually sing those parts because people want to hear those parts the way they were sung. It always frustrated me that Mariah would use pitched down versions of the studio recording of Without You in her live performances because those notes aren't hard for her to hit. But, we. Mariah has been improving tremendously and I am so happy for her.

Andrew / Tommy and his posse (47,725)
by Edward from USA

|
Andrew, I read Tommy's "Hitmaker: The Man And His Music" to have a better understanding about the development of Mariah's career and what went on between them. Even though the book is not centered on Mariah, it gives a good insight about the situation. It was interesting to find out what her reaction was to losing to all her Grammy nominations back in '96. The man had the vision, and the muscle/resources while Mariah had the talent/voice. It was the perfect combination. I wonder what would've happened had they not gotten involved sentimentally. My problem with Tommy is with the proven fact that he knowingly encourage JLo to use the Firecracker sample Mariah had already used on Loverboy, and not only that, the use of Ja Rule on a very similar song to "If We", and that's not speculation. Also it's a proven fact that sabotage Mariah's career using his power to coerce DJ's into not playing her, that was pure evil.

New annual Christmas shows in New York / sponsored by Coca Cola (47,724)
by M from UK

Damn I wish I was a New Yorker right now. The first annual set of Christmas shows in December are going to be amazing. Remember the Merry Christmas II You TV special? I think it's amazing that Mariah will be allowing fans to see her during her favorite time of year. Every year during a time when AIWFCIY goes to #1 every year and she's in the forefront of everyone's minds the entire season. Plus the shows will get things buzzing for a North American leg of the tour before she goes to Jamaica in January and rumored to be here in the UK Spring 2015. So much to look forward to, we should be celebrating. Also, happy Halloween to all the lambily.

Don't you hate it when a bored ass blogger makes a post titled "Why I may be the only person still rooting for Mariah", then makes an unintentionally transparent article claiming to be "rooting" for her, but then tears her to shreds for the sake of clicks. Yeah mate, you're the only person rooting for her when she's sold over 200 million albums to date and just ended 11 sold-out and packed out arena shows. Keep it moving trolls, there are more on this messageboard than I had originally thought. Good thing Mariah has better things to do than worry about that.

All Walter wants for Christmas (47,722)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
At the risk if taking over the board again - I have no intention, let's not hate on Afanasieff. Or even Tommy. We will never know what went on. The woman is a beacon, as proved by the Minaj absurdity, and has a class for not reacting, a class we would all be better people for adopting. I don't recall MC praising Walter for his contributions. Although in her defence, the Proctor's Special: "I sing it and he plays it" (to paraphrase). It does genuinely now feel like Mariah was right about a so-called Mafia type existence (did he say something like "she moved away from *us*"? I don't care to re-read it). Mariah doesn't let people cover? Respect. But she doesn't praise him either. Don't you feel like they considered Mariah a silly little girl who left the protection of the "family" losing them their cut? Maybe. AIWFCIY is perhaps going to go down as the most genius construction of music in history long after we have all come to pass. Wish people "Mariah Christmas". And wish Walter well.

My all / car ride medley (47,721)

The "My all" performance was live. And she sounded great. That crack was nothing. It happens, but she made up for it with those amazing runs at the end. The car ride medley was also great. Mariah should definitely sing "Don't forget about us" more. Those whistles at the end are awesome. Try that Ariana Grande.

The future (47,720)
by Andrew from UK

Mate, you are right: the attempts to cover up the lipping with the usual gimmicks is, ironically, definitely the biggest give away. The instant shift in behaviour and facial expressions, even though Mariah of course knows she hadn't sung that way since day one, suggests she may be embarrassed or nervous about doing it. Regardless, the parts I'm hearing her lip she's actually doing elsewhere. Is it a breathing thing? Does she need pauses for the muscles? I don't get it. She should drop the FLAB-style endings. Do we need massive powerhouse anymore? It's not even in fashion. Let's stick to the harmonies, that soul-depth tone, the party beats and the sentimentality. I accept now that MC concerts are very much nostalgia after 24 years. Run with it and do that well, no? It should be all about the party not the ridiculous notes. People don't miss nineties/noughties Mariah or nineties/noughties vocals, they miss the nineties and noughties. And she can bring it back for a party.

Billboard article and Mariah's reconciliation with Walter (47,719)
by ADAM from USA
| |
|
|
I loved the insight into the creation of the album and Walter's comments about Mariah's input and Tommy Mottola's wisdom way back then. We can all agree that Mariah was unhappy with Tommy's control over her, however I think we can all agree in hindsight, that this man was very smart to convince Mariah to record holiday music and choose the songs she did which made her a household name and legend. I think if Tommy wasn't involved and she had total control, the album would have never existed and if it did, we would not have AIWFCIY sounding as retro as it did which is the key to its success. I wish Mariah would get passed her grudges from 1998 and reconcile with Walter. He's said many times that she's wonderful and a great producer, composer, and vocalist. They make magic together and are my favorite producing couple of her entire catalog. I place them even higher than JD and MC. If it were up to me I'd trade "We Belong Together" for any other gem that wasn't released during the Music Box or Daydream era. I also hope that now that MC's has her own family, that she at least sends Tommy some flowers every Christmas for insisting she record holiday music because really although she has millions of records and 18 #1's, her best long-lasting legacy in music will be her contribution to Christmas. Everyone loves Mariah every December no matter if they think she's relevant or not and I think that speaks volumes more than any statistic.

MC's NYC Christmas show at Beacon, who wants to go with me? (47,717)
by ADAM from USA
| |
|
|
I'm so excited Mariah's announced she's doing 4 shows at the Beacon Theater for December 15, 16, 18 and 20th. I'm flexible to go to any of these dates so it would be nice to go with another super fan from this message board. Unfortunately none of my friends are as big of fan of hers to want to go with me, so if anyone's planning on already going for any of these dates in NYC, can you email me at NY1COCO@gmail.com and we can coordinate what show your going to and chat beforehand please? Much appreciated.
