Why shan't Mariah just keep making music because she wants to? The answer is, she can. If it's something that makes her happy, and she is still capable, then why not. How stifling to stop doing what you love based on your past successes. Maybe popularity and sales and streams are not the only measurements of success anyway.

I think Mariah can continue to release music for as long as she wants to. Aretha dropped a covers album before she passed and Patti recently dropped a jazz album. So Mariah can do something like that. As of right now, she can also drop an album with current sounds. The reason for this is very superficial, but it's true. Mariah still looks good. The thing with Janet, Madonna, or Lil Kim trying to put out a current club banger is that, well, the plastic surgeries aren't able to mask their age anymore. And in this superficial world, if you don't look hot you can't try to make hot music, at least if you are a woman. Mimi seems to be in the JLo group for the genetic lottery, which means she can actually still try to do something a little current. Another thing working in her favor is that unlike JLo, Janet, Kim and Madonna, Mariah's act involves ballads and ballgowns, which translates well into old age. So even when she moves into full elder matron mode, she can still kind of do her ballgown diva thing without it being weird or desperate.

Mariah's brother was with her during her first two breakdowns and told the film makers in no uncertain terms that Mizza was lying, she absolutely did not try to jump out of car and did in no way attempt suicide.

Mariah retire? (88,756)
by Dove from United States

Mariah's albums have never disappointed me. I feel like being in the studio is her forte and she never goes wrong in that area. If she needs to make money she should keep touring but if she's okay with the money she's made, and what she's accomplished so far, she should just relax and travel with her kids and make straight to consumer albums. For fun. Just for herself and the lambs. A lot of us don't love R&B but we'll still support her because we love her voice. But maybe she can throw us a few bones and record an album of standards or jazz or gospel songs. (She could get someone like Walter Afanasief who can knows how to make the computer sound like real instruments.) Before she leaves the record company she should release all the B-sides and unreleased tracks and maybe a collection of her best performances and the Tokyo concert. And any other gems we don't know about. She has to make an announcement that this is what she's doing so us fans can lower our expectations and accept that she's not going to chart anymore, because she can't without the support from the machine.

B, I guess when I meant collab, I meant songs where she relegates her role to a feature. This opens her world into different artists and be inspired and reach a new audience. Sure it's a massive downgrade but she is lending her name and she is getting updated. Honestly this is her only way into current music landscape again. But if she can break through with one hit she will open her discography to generation z who don't know her songs outside of Christmas. That is how she rebooted herself with I Know What You Want. Five years is a long time to be gone in mainstream, but 10 years since Obsessed, well that is basically retirement to some people. Many generation z don't even know her songs at all.

It's actually a little more interesting to watch than the original. It's hard to understand what Stefflon Don is saying though. Oh well, she just got two YouTube streams from me. I'm liking the new Missie track with Lizzo. I wonder if it will get airplay. I suspect, yes.

You, B, and jaker20 have given me a lot of food for thought on why Mariah's success seems to have a ceiling on it. I definitely agree that R&B is dead, but only if an older artist is doing it. If someone like SZA or H.E.R does R&B, people act like they practically invented the genre. If someone over 40 does it, it's seen as an older artist doing the same old shit. I know this is blasphemy to some lambs, but there is a point where Mariah needs to retire from making new music not because she doesn't make good music, but for the sake of her legacy and leaving on the highest note possible. I don't want her to be the artist that doesn't know when to say when and has to be essentially dragged out or crowded out of the industry by new artists. No matter how much lambs endlessly want new music, there's a point where it's not a good look. Especially for an artist who has seen such unfathomable success early on that there is nowhere to go but down, even on her best day. If the label is already putting her out to pasture now, it's not going to get any better as she continues to get older, has lukewarm sales, and continues to stick to R&B unless a miracle happens. I don't want to watch my favorite artist continue to put out great bodies of work and keep getting played and trivialized by the music industry. I'm sure people could argue that as long as she puts out good albums, who cares about its success, but it's just the principle of it that I want people to put some respect on her name. She's accomplished too much to be so dismissed.

The lies, the hatefulness and dare I say the jealousy in this board is real. Mariah has been singing live this entire tour, every article posted about her has had nothing but kind words about her voice. Literately all of the comments I have seen from people who were at the show are singing a different tune. I'm honestly convinced that a lot of people here don't love Mariah anymore (hell they don't even like her) and just wants drag/bring her down.
Let me clarify something to the haters, Mariah is the most successful female singer songwriter and producer of all time. The industry biggest hit maker and my angel. Mariah will forever be on the history books and you creatures will be forgotten once you leave this board.
PS: Kinda funny how this is coming from a Brit, when their greatest female singer Adele (this generation) is not even comparable with the top 10,000 greatest vocalists from America. I just had to laugh. Side note: My baby would kill an umbrella any day of the week.

Ursula wanted Ariel's voice because that's what Eric was attracted to, and she was setting her up to fail (because she wanted her soul), not because she actually wanted her singing voice - Ursula has a great singing voice already.
Mariah looks young but not that young. Ariel is a teen and Mariah can pull off maybe 28. If she played Ariel that would look ridiculous. She could play a young princess in an animated princess movie but not a live action one. In my opinion.
Ursula is a way more interesting character anyway. Ariel is a young and dumb girl. She sold her soul for a guy she didn't even know. Ursula is a shrewd business woman. I think we all start out as Ariel but end up as Ursula. Plus, Mariah has that voluptuous womanly body and a tiny waist. Ariel has a teenager body.
Ariana is a talented singer but nobody sounds better than Mariah in a studio recording. She could knock it out if the park if done right.
Realistically I know this would never happen but it was a fun thought so I wanted to share it.

The only song I can see Mariah covering these days is Rihanna's Umbrella. Only because Mariah can pull off the "eh eh eh" part live, as that's all she can manage without a wall of backing singers, pre-record, hoists, pulleys, chaise lounges, ear pieces, corsets and lip syncing. God loves her.

Let me guess this straight. Actually, it's Disney, so let me get this gay. Some people would want Mariah to play Ursula the Sea Witch who tricks Ariel. Out. Of. Her. Singing. Voice. Her singing voice. Is it April 1st yet? Suggest Bill Cosby for the Mermaid's singer teacher Sebastian, Miss Vanjie for the butch King Triton and MCA Webmaster Eric to play the dashing Prince Eric. Not because we know that Eric is dashing. But just to have him censor everyone else's part so much that they quit.

I'm not mad, but I can't stop laughing because of this "Mariah played (a hot) Ursala". It's too much for me. Lol. I love Disney too especially the old classics but I can't imagine Mariah doing a Disney song again. I count "Almost home" because it was for "Oz" made by Disney. Just for laughs: MC is the ultimate Arielle, didn't she mention she loves the Arielle theme?

But Randy there isn't much else she can do this go round now can she? Most artists don't get residuals when they were in their heyday. They usually die broke. She's got money because she wrote 17 number 1 singles so songwriters will always have royalties paid out. Back to my first sentence. The label isn't supporting her or investing much into her project. They released a buzz single with a budget conscious video instead of being bold and sending the song to (caps) all radio formats, especially when it started to become a meme. Then they decide to do instant grats and release half the album to get the young streaming markets attention and that didn't work because kids only stream what's popular and on trend and she is neither unless it's Christmas. All her other projects she didn't promote much and had poor roll outs so retailers understocked her cd and anyone that does buy her music buys the cd and since it's not stocked she was never going to have a big first week sales. Then the label finally decides to release With You and only sends its to AC stations. No pop, not top 40. That had to be a bitter pill for her to swallow. Can you image being used to having your song sent to all formats only to find out the label is putting you out to pasture on AC only. It's got tax write off written all over the project. She already had these concerts lined up but I was proud that she at least promoted the heck out of it for the little free time she had with good performances and insightful interviews. Jennifer Lopez is on Epic as well but they dump tons of money her way on big budget videos and A list collabs like Cardi on Dinero yet she keeps flopping. She's releasing another single and the label paid for French on that one. A No No at least got sent to urban which is her only chance in hell at garnering a decent hit and it's already gaining spins but she needs the label to send it to pop and top 40. If it's not a big enough hit on urban to cross over the era is done. You see she wanted Cardi and Kim and the label only bothered to pay for Stefflon Don and even did a crappy version of a remix. If I were her I'd tour too at least to make some kind of money at this point. At least the tour isn't a rehash and worth attending. Just my thoughts.

Okay, please nobody get mad (88,741)
by Dove from United States

I was watching Disney princess videos and I just hatched an idea I had to share. This will probably never happen but dream with me. Okay, what if they did a live action movie of The Little Mermaid and Mariah played (a hot) Ursala and Ariana Grande played Ariel (with the red hair she had on Victorious). Mariah could wear this dress and they could CGI the tentacles. She could wear a wig with long light (white) hair and wear the dramatic Ursula makeup and red nails. They could paint her skin that pink yet lavender color. I imagine her really getting into character and singing it with the sass of the cartoon. And I love Mariah's speaking voice. They could film it in a zero gravity chamber so their hair can float around like they're under water. It would kinda make fun of what's said about her and show that she doesn't take herself too seriously.
I like the lyrics because she sings: "I admit that in the past I've been a nasty. They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch." And "I fortunately know a little magic, it's a talent that I always have possessed. And dear lady, please don't laugh I use it on behalf of the miserable, the lonely, and depressed." Because there have been reports that she is not nice and also to me she's magic so that part fits too. I feel like a lot of us lambs have said Mariah's music has gotten us through tough times when we were depressed. I think it would get people talking and would be funny and hopefully look and sound good. Even if it wasn't a whole movie, just that song Poor Unfortunate Souls.

R&B like it use to will never be popular again. A version inspired by will only come back if fused with another genre. The whole industry is like that, it's not just R&B. As an artist, Mariah should be able to do that. That is why I have always said her only way forward is to collaborate. That's how artists learn and get inspired. With all her money, she should be working with new and inspired artists, support them, and with that she learns from them too. But she is surrounded by the same paycheck people who have no new ideas.
Also, this is somehow related to the streaming discussion. This is actually what streaming is about, taking control of your creative destiny and cutting the fat in your team. Streaming is a platform that brings artists directly to the listeners, no label executives in the middle who brings no artistry to the table. The hot artists now are everyday relatable people. That trend imo peaked with Adele and continued on with Halsey, Ariana, etc and it will not go back to how it was before. The diva worship is over. They are relegated to tribute shows.
