Mariah admits that filming in her Santa suit wasn't "chic"

Filming the "All I Want for Christmas" music video wasn't all snow angels and sugar plums, according to Mariah Carey. In a new Allure video published on August 12, the Grammy winner, 56, looked back on her most memorable music video outfits, including the one and only Santa Claus suit from the famous 1994 shoot.

When recalling the outfit, which included a snug red jumpsuit with a belt and fur trim, the goddess of Christmas admitted that filming in it "was definitely not chic and effortless", especially in the snow. The singer said that she was "so freezing" in the "tiny little" suit and even remembered her hair freezing up from the frigid weather.

Still, the look is one she'll keep forever. "Someone asked me, 'Do you still have that one?' and I'm like, 'Yeah, I use the same one every year.'"

Reflecting on the holiday track, which was part of Carey's 1994 Merry Christmas album, she admitted that she had "no idea" how much of an impact it would have on the pop genre and her career.

In fact, the song has gotten so big worldwide that it earned three Guinness World Records titles, including the status of highest-charting holiday (Christmas/New Year) song on the Billboard Hot 100, in 2019 alone.

Turns out, it didn't take much from Carey behind the scenes to make the track a No. 1 hit. "I started writing that on a little DX7 or Casio keyboard that was in this little room in the house that I lived in at the time in Upstate New York lifetimes ago. Just writing down everything that I thought about. All the things that reminded me of Christmas that made me feel festive that I wanted other people to feel."

As much as the festive tune is a hit among fans, it's also one that Carey turns to time and time again come November 1.

In honor of "All I Want for Christmas Is You"'s 20th anniversary, Carey released an updated music video for the classic, including her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, in the magic. For the remake, Carey slipped back into the Santa-inspired look alongside other dazzling ensembles such as a plunging red gown and a costume influenced by The Nutcracker to up the glamour.

Christmas glitz has become so synonymous with Carey over the years that when Mattel made a Barbie in her honor back in 2023, the company made sure to channel her love for the season through the clothes.

"When I saw my doll, I was like, 'Oh my gosh, this is so cute.' Because it's based on the Christmas dress that I wear in the second 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' video, which was directed by Joseph Kahn," she previously told People.
