Mariah was "treated as an ATM machine with a wig on"

On Wednesday, the pop star shared a trailer on Instagram for her new interview with Oprah Winfrey coming out on Apple TV+ today in which the pair discuss some of the stories she revealed in the book. She wrote in the caption, "I couldn't have asked for a better way to introduce my memoir than having a conversation with my friend, therapist and icon Ms. Oprah, on her series The Oprah Conversation."

Oprah replied in a comment, "Can you believe this is our tenth interview? Thank you Mimi for coming on The Oprah Conversation with your truth and openness because it will help other people unearth their own meaning. The lambs are going to love it. It's available tonight at midnight EST y'all."

In the clip, Carey cryptically announces, "I wouldn't have gone here if I hadn't been treated as an ATM machine with a wig on," later adding, "I didn't feel like I was worthy of existing" and "I did feel like I was held captive in that relationship." Oprah replies, "The loneliness and sadness behind the facade - I now understand it."

It's unclear precisely what the pair are discussing in the spliced-together video, but the singer could be referring to both the financial demands her family placed on her and her former relationship with music executive Tommy Mottola. Carey married the then Sony Music executive - the label she was signed to at the time - at the age of 23 before divorcing five years later.

She has previously referred to her role in that marriage as "being a prisoner" and in the book describes the upstate New York mansion they shared as "Sing Sing" because of the security cameras and guards placed around the house, according to the L.A. Times.

In his own memoir, Hitmaker: The Man and His Music, Mottola admitted that his marriage to Carey was "absolutely wrong and inappropriate". In a statement to Page Six this week, he added, "I am deeply gratified to have played that role in Mariah's well-deserved and remarkable success, and continue to wish her and her family only the very best."
