Mariah Carey: a vocal powerhouse

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York. She is the daughter of Alfred Roy, an African American native of Venezuela, and Patricia Hickey, who is of Irish descent. The name Carey was adopted by her paternal grandfather after emigrating to New York. Her mother was an occasional opera singer and vocal coach before meeting Alfred in 1960, who was an aeronautical engineer. They were married that same year, and her mother's family disowned her for marrying a black man. Carey grew up without the attention of her maternal family.

Mariah Carey is the youngest of three brothers. During the years between the birth of her older sister, Alison and herself, the family had problems in their community because of their ethnic origin. When she was three years old, her parents divorced. Carey would grow up without seeing her father.

Gifted with a great talent for music since childhood, she corrected her mother when she practiced. She began to teach singing and at age 6, she made her debut at her school in the performance of the South Pacific. In 1984, she began working at Long Island Studios. At age 16, her brother Morgan offered her the opportunity to make a 24-track professional model in Manhattan. There she met Ben Margulies.

In 1988, she attends an audition and gets work doing the chorus for Brenda K. Starr. Brenda invites her to a party where she meets the head of Columbia, Tommy Mottola (her future husband). Tommy listens to her in his car as he leaves the party and is impressed by her voice, to the point of turning around and returning to the party. In December of the same year, she signs a contract with CBS Columbia.

In 1990, she recorded her debut album with producers Narada Michael Walden, Rhett Lawrence and Ric Wake. Taking advantage of the material she and Ben Margulies had composed during the previous three years. Her album is titled Mariah Carey. Her single, "Vision Of Love" went straight to number one of the sales charts with more than six million copies and was awarded a Grammy. Her second album Emotions was published in 1991. In 1993, Music Box appeared with hits like "Without You", "Dreamlover" and "Hero" and sold 25 million copies. In 1999 she filmed for The Bachelor .

March 2001, she broke with the company Sony Music and on April 4, signed a contract with Virgin Records for a total of five albums for about 80 million dollars. In December 2001, EMI, owner of Virgin, decides to break the contract because the sales of about 3 million copies of the album Glitter did not recover the investment. In 2002, they reached an agreement to rescind the contract and she received $28 million as compensation.

She married Tommy Mottola on June 5, 1993. The relationship began to deteriorate due to creative differences on her albums. They divorced in 1998. Mariah Carey met actor and comedian Nick Cannon while promoting the Bye Bye music video. On April 30, 2008, they were married in the Bahamas. In October 2010, she announced her pregnancy, and on April 30, 2011 she gave birth to twins Scott Cannon and Monroe Cannon. In August 2014, Cannon confirmed that he and Carey had been separated for months.
