I don't know how to put this, so I'm just gonna say it direct. Mariah and the Grammys are like water and fire. They don't mix. You really just have to go back in time to every time she was nominated, to see clearly that, that Academy has something against her and the feeling's reciprocal from her to them too. Lol - remember that clip when she spoke of "When they're ready to give her Grammys, they would come see her. Oh boy."

I love her debut voice, but I have to agree 93-94 is pure perfection. Powerful, silky smooth, fluid.

I never *got* liking the debut voice over what came after. 92-94 may have had ever-so-slightly less power, but the tone was more silky and fluid. It was beautiful and impressive - as opposed to just impressive. The debut era feels like Mariah attended the Whitney Houston School of Shouting.

Of course she will get to number one. She looks better than ever, she sounds amazing (I don't understand why some people say she is lip syncing when clearly she is singing live) and she will be number one for Christmas.
Btw, I have to ask - are there any straight people here or I am the only straight guy here?

Hi Tevin, thanks for your suggested songs by Taylor. I liked them all but "Dear John" is my favourite. I always say I want a jazz album by Mariah which I still do. I think Mariah could also do some country, gospel and retro-soul. She can sing every genre like she never did something else. That's rare.

I agree with most of these tracks except I don't care to hear Justin Timberlake or want Mariah associating with him. He's a snake and has done some shady ish towards women. I can't stand people like him, a true culture vulture. There For Me has always been one of my favorites and I include it in my Glitter soundtrack playlist.

I'm quite curious to read everyone's opinion. For 2024, would you rather have Mariah releases a 10 to 12 tract Rarities 2 album, where half of the songs are never before heard songs, or would you rather see here release a brand new 10 to 12 song studio album?

I knew I liked you. So let's do it.
"And, no, asking a singer to sing isn't a big ask, but expecting 1995 or 2000s vocals isn't going to happen no matter the critique."
Please do point to the recent post that requests such vocals be produced. I'll be first in line to berate the poster for making such a silly request. Don't hold back on me now because I am lovin' me some Nasty Norman - but I, too, despise gaslighting, or as I like to label it: "flat denial of observable reality". So point to the posts and we can get past the foreplay and have ourselves a moment.
"It's okay to only like her 90s stuff and nothing past that. Admit it and move on - you'll all be happier. But no need to constantly bash every effing move and call it constructive when all it is, is tearing things down."
Well, Big Nasty, I'm struggling to letcha get to second base with this one so let's unpack it while we get cosy by the fire. I can't remember - nay, imagine - any of the guys, girls or Terna-based species that visit this website ever saying that they only like Mariah Carey's 90s music. It would be an absurdity. They would be, ripped, shredded, slapped... wait. I'm gonna stop that right there because I know I got Bobby A excited and this is a date for two. So pop in the relevant posts where people have stated the absurd 90s things, then pop open the Cristal so we can round third base in a bubble bath.
"Now, joy to the effing world or whatever. We mostly love everyone."
Big Nasty, how bloody dare you? I'm lying here, bubbles in one hand, some other kinda bubbles protecting my itty bitty dignity, waiting for you to dive in and hit a home run... and you love "mostly everyone"? Nuh uh. I'm a one guy kinda girl. Close the door, lose the key, leave the posts on the mat for me. Show is over.
[How pissed is everyone right now for having that song put it into their brains? Serves you right for reading my private love letter to Big Nasty.]

Dear John, Back to December and Enchanted are three beautiful songs from Taylor's album Speak Now. Give them a listen. It's no Butterfly album but she does have a decent pen game, even if it slightly sub par to Mariah's. Anyway let me know how you like those three songs, they are what made me a Taylor fan.

Yes, Taylor Swift seems very relatable. I only know "Shake it off" and her debut country album. Lol I had friends from Texas, they told me to give the album a try when it came out. Back then I never thought Taylor Swift would be the biggest female pop star chartwise in 2023.

7 songs one billion streams (103,922)
by Tevin from USA

I still say Daydream was the most perfect album title that Mariah has named. On the outside "looking in" she was on top of the world with money, fame, prestige, the looks and the voice. Yet behind the scenes with the all the mess that was going on and falling apart in her personal life, all the external "happiness" truly was just a daydream.

I often wondered why she seemed to completely pay Daydream dust once the touring was over. I arrived to the conclusion that Butterfly was actually borne out of the ashes of the Never-Were-Grammy's for Daydream.
That is to say: I believe the conversation, or the statement she gave Tommy and Columbia Records was something along the lines of the following:
"I made the perfect pop/R&B crossover album, with Daydream, I practically ruled Billboard for a year with it, got three No.1 singles out of it, put Old Dirty Bastard at No.1 on a pop record, revolutionized the Middle8 rapper segment - and what did the industry do to me?
It put me on a television camera for three hours whilst they kept giving me the middle finger and I had to sit there and take it. Well I'm done with them. I'm not doing another Daydream: I'm doing something completely new."
And in that the concept of Butterfly was born and Daydream was buried for a decade or so.

by Bill from the UK

I'm sure I'm not alone in having an impending sense of dread, rather than excitement, about the upcoming Christmas concerts. At this point we know the drill. 95% lipped performances with the occasional "eh" barked out, peppered with a couple of verses being "spoken melodically" for good measure. The focus will be on the hair, make up, breasts, and shimmering gown or, heaven forbid, a return to those hideous leotards.
YouTube will be littered with comments from the delusionals saying it's live, she has a cold, she has nothing to prove, she's preserving her voice etc. That last one always gets me lol. What on earth is she preserving her voice for, if not when performing live in concert? I mean, she's been preserving her voice since 1997. It's preserved for heaven's sake.
My advice as Mariah's manager? Cancel the concerts, retire gracefully, and focus on re-releasing back catalogue specials. Start with The Rarities II You (I Lose Control, We're Not Making Love Anymore, There for Me, and Randy's Theme all should have been represented on the original), find and release your infamous demo tape so we can experience what Tommy did in the limo that fateful night, HD the crap out of the Music Box, Daydream (especially London, which I attended), Butterfly, Rainbow and Charmbracelet Tour footage, and please, seek permission from the estate of Prince to release your Glitter-era duet.
Stagger that out over the next few years with "30" releases of the studio albums as their anniversaries hit and everyone will forget about the dreadful performances of the last 10-15 years which are now greatly outweighing the good.

Victor, I'll answer your question. I love Mariah not only because she is beautiful, but also because of her voice. I grew up listening to her, because my parents would play her music and a few other people's music (such as Luther V) all the time back in the early to mid 90s. They exposed me to a wide variety of music, singers, and genres, but they played Mariah all the time. Some of my first memories of music was hearing songs from Mariah's Daydream era. Those songs bring back so many sweet childhood memories and are forever etch in my mind. I was and still am enamored by her voice, and pen game. I love me some Mimi.

Wow Mariah is looking in great shape, from her recent Instagram post. She really seems in a good place right now and taking care of herself. Let’s hope that with the added confidence of looking her best she starts to focus on giving us some new music and working on those vocals. Maybe reliving the [Music Box] era has given her the push she needed to remember how great she was.

Tommy's thoughts about MC30 (103,431)
by Tevin from USA
| |
|
|
I feel like Everything Fades Away is about Tommy. I'd be quiet curious to know when Mariah wrote that song, possibly after "honeymoon gone bad", as told in her book. Maybe then she realized that marriage wasn't going to change how Tommy treated her, so from that time on her love for him faded more and more away. It's fun to speculate. But anyway as much as I never understood how the UK folks thought EFA should have come after All I Ever Wanted, I must admit after listening to it at the end of the official album now, and thinking of how it not only possibly represented what was going on in her marriage and life, but the song also played as a perfect prelude to Mariah's sweet sweet fantasy and eventual freedom as her subsequent two albums would show. Basically what I'm saying is the amazing people across the pond had it right this time around. EFA is the proper ending to Music Box. I stand corrected.

Albums (103,122)
by Bill from the UK

Well Mariah argued her way out of Sony's 10-album deal early. They said albums like Unplugged and #1's didn't count, but she countered as Unplugged charted in the albums chart, as #1's contained new material and new singles. Then they agreed to part with Greatest Hits being the 10th album. Same might be said for the Epic contract. Caution, #1 to Infinity and that All I Want for Christmas Is You compilation for the book were all released through Epic. That makes three of the same logic is applied. Time will tell.

I believe someone on here mentioned that Mariah still has one or two more albums to fulfill with her current contract. Caution (103,114)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
I think it now wise for everyone to hope that Caution was Mariah's last album of new material. I am glad people are now more honest about the damage to Mariah's voice but I do not think nearly honest enough. To be blunt: Mariah Carey is a bad singer. There is little point of talking about "current voice" or opining on things Mariah can do to improve how she sounds: her voice is irreparably damaged to the point where she sings badly - if she can even sing at all.
I get no pleasure in saying shit like this, truly. It used to make me somewhat sad and that in turn led to anger. But I do recall many years ago blaming Mariah for the decay and I will stand by those words. Given that she has hardly sung a live note above Middle C in well over a decade, there is some wonder to be had at exactly what she has been doing. I can hazard many guesses and they would involve things that none of us should do if we want to not damage our voice. Save for deepthroating Donkey Kong, alcohol and smoking are just about the worst things you can do to your voice. And given Nick Cannon's ability to spread his seed into an array of vapid women, all three vices I would suggest may had their way with Mariah's throat.
And this is what really used to piss me off amongst a handful of other things: Mariah Carey ruined her own voice. She didn't take care of it. Neither did Whitney Houston. I would like to think that were I to have been blessed with pipes like that I would have done everything to protect them. But like modern youth vilifying people long since dead for behaviour once considered the norm but now understood to be wrong, it is very easy to make judgement on behaviour when you do not appreciate or even understand the context. Were we to have lived another's life, would we have behaved the same or would we have applied our superior attitude or morality and succeeded where they failed? It is very easy to cling on to virtues when your back is not against the wall.
Whether Mariah's personality shift and the negative behaviours that ensued are a direct cause of her losing the ability to sing, or the other way around - or whether the issues were hardware or software - I can say that I have made my peace with the fact that she probably ought to have done a lot more to look after her voice and it is time to stop singing and promote a legacy.
I do feel extremely, extremely sorry for Celine Dion who famously looked after her throat, knowing full well that she had been handed the winning ticket, only to now face losing it in, what can only be described as cruel clutch of circumstance. Marcus Aurelius wrote that we should receive things without pride and let go of them without attachment. How very hard that is with the things you love most in the world, eh?
The albums must end with Caution. There is no good to be gained from any further exposure of the decay. Absolutely none at all.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch: totally loving revisiting the Dreamlover original. Still can't find a live version of her singing the ending like the record, so if anyone knows of one I'll loving you long time.
