Who was actually there? Toronto shows (101,819)
by Edward from USA
| |
|

I couldn't have said better. I've gone to the Christmas shows three times at Beacon Theater, and with the euphoria and excitement, one don't really notice the miming or even the struggle unless it is really bad. At Beacon Theater she was way better than this, but guess what? When I got home, and looked at the videos my friend and I recorded from third row, I could notice everything, the good and the not so good, but at that point, the not so good was very decent. She wasn't sing-shouting or singing as if she was in pain or constipated. It's delusional to think that cellphone recordings are altering anything to make her look bad. Video and sound from camcorders can't compete with the high quality of cellphones recordings nowadays, but if you watch that awful recording of Mariah on the Music Box Tour, you would notice that while the image was bad, Mariah sounded amazing, so there goes that theory. If anything, fan's recordings with cellphones have just come to expose her, that's all. Nobody is expecting her to sound like in the 1990's, but she should have some respect for the people who are paying their hard earned money to go see a decent show and there's nothing wrong about it. Mariah doesn't owe us anything, but we don't owe her anything either. It's only fair to demand a decent performance for a decent amount of money. Being delusional is looking at those recordings and think that the recordings are so distorted that they make her sound as if were struggling or plain flat.

The benefit of phone recordings is that they remove the reverb. So it becomes abundantly clear when the lip syncing and pre-records kick in. Usually though we are put on notice as Mariah will fiddle with the malfunctioning ear piece (which I think is actually her cue to the sound technician), and then waggle her head when she mimes the note. If you enjoyed the concert good for you, but any spectator can see it was one of her worst yet. Hardly phenomenal as you put it. That status is reserved for the Daydream Tour stop at London on June 23rd 1996. What an evening that was. Sorry you missed out.

Who the [censored] are you to tell him to stop following her? Anybody with decent hearing can tell she's struggling, but really struggling. She's struggling even with songs that are not vocally demanding. "Christmas Time Is in the Air" is a prime example of that.

Then stop following her. All you people that criticize her, move on with your life. No one cares what you think, your opinion will never matter to anyone. Mariah will not change Mariah. Let go, move on, do whatever it is you gotta do, find peace with yourself because this [censored] is getting old, again Mariah is Mariah and she will never ever change for you or anybody else, get it in your heads.

There's nothing sarcastic about your post and you know it. You're backpedaling because you realized how ridiculous her attempt at monopolizing Christmas was. It's actually arrogant on her part to even think she could sequester Christmas in perpetuity. I hope she doesn't go for Hanukkah next year.

Chart question (101,618)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Remember that during the 90's they were heavily invested in getting people to buying albums, because singles would usually cannibalize album sales, that's why "Can't Let Go" never made to #1. The rules were also different then. Many songs were #1 on airplay, but since they weren't commercially available as physical singles, they were not allowed to chart. AIWFCIY has benefited from such the rule change for four years now, and it will eventually claim the record as the song with moths weeks at #1 in about three more years if it keeps scoring at least 3 weeks at #1 per year.

Chart question (101,617)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
Does anyone remember Columbia's marketing and chart strategy in 1995-1997 to cause Fantasy, One Sweet Day, and Honey to debut at #1 on Hot 100? It had to be more than radio airplay and physical sales. I think back then that new singles were released to radio and retailers on Tuesday. MC only did it during that time only. Butterfly could have done the same thing, but Tommy must have pulled all Butterfly marketing money to lessen the shine on the song's poignant message and lyrics that made him not too happy about his wife breaking free from him.

Now that Mariah has cemented her name and brand for Christmas season (#1 song, books, legacy) don't you guys think Mariah should invest in her own big budget blockbuster Christmas movie, the movie where people would tune in to every Christmas, like Home Alone, Love Actually, The Grinch. I'm not talking about that low budget Hallmark movie, Christmas Melody, that Mariah acted and produced, I want a big budget movie where Mariah and A-list actor as romantic interest, maybe Dwayne, Ryan Reynolds etc.

Well, just like they pushed poor Whitney into embarrassment by encouraging her into touring when she wasn't ready, Marian also has her "yass queen" sycophants and some delusional fans that wouldn't give to fs about her as long as they get a glimpse of her. The thing is now with cellphones it is impossible to keep any concert/performance isolated.

I've seen most of the clips. My All was particularly bad as she lipped the chorus and, of course, carried on miming when they playback stopped and had to awkwardly start singing. It was an embarrassment, and a disaster. None of Mariah's peers or anyone of her status would have done such a performance. Frankly I don't really know why she bothers. She has her money, she has her legacy, she has her records. Why put herself, and us, through these dreadful performances time and time again.

I felt that she was trying very hard to emulate Patti all way with this performance. I think that MC captured Patti's vocal performance and inflections 100%. I really feel that MC's voice now is always best when she is relaxed and singing in her mid-range. I just want her to sing and leave the whistle notes out.

Why you mad? Your post shows you were definitely in grade school when this happened. Many artists keep everything he mentioned far into their careers. One could speculate that the more successful you get, the more confident too. Mariah is not 80, she's just 53. This performance wasn't only about the voice, but about the soul, the confidence, the humble demeanor, the grace. Age doesn't have anything to do with it. Back then the diva act hadn't been put into effect yet.
