Mariah 1990-2010 (78,463) by T from USA
These 20 years were the golden years of MC. Part of me wishes she stepped away fully after MCIIY. Had her children and came back for her 25th anniversary to re-release #1's (with #Beautiful and Dedicated as the bonus tracks) and that's it. It would've been a storied ending to her career. Now year by year she's earasing everything she worked so hard for.

Re: Article: Mariah Carey gets another shot at reality TV (78,397) (78,399) by T from USA
Doesn't anyone get it? There is no new album. Never was. She's working on songs here and there but if you you think she was crafting a cohesive body of work like MIAM or Butterfly 2.0 then you've been fooled. Remember how long it took her to make the last album? Touring is the new Mariah. I'll be surprised if she ever releases another album again.

For the first time in a while (76,899) by T from USA
For the first time in a while Mariah is reminding me of the old Mariah. Her most recent Instagram pics of her swimming and the 4th of July shot has got me feeling Mariah emotions. And go figure, it's the first weekend she has spent away from Stella since 2015.

90's vs 2000's (76,845) by T from USA
I just realized just how much a work house she is. In the decade of the 1990-2000 she released nine CDs (in ten years). Then from 2001-2010 she released another astonishing seven CDs. Makes you think how little the two releases from this decade have been.

1990-2000
- Mariah Carey
- Emotions
- Unplugged
- Music Box
- Merry Christmas
- Daydream
- Butterfly
- #1's
- Rainbow

2001-2010
- Greatest Hits
- Glitter
- Charmbracelet
- TEOM
- E=MC2
- Memoirs

Re: It's not to stay relevent (76,733) (76,738) by T from USA
She had one of the best industry managers going for touring in 2012 briefly with Irving Azoff. He is the head of Live Nation and has been in the music business forever. That was her chance at the age of 42 to start her touring career properly. I have no idea why she dropped him.

Re: It's not to stay relevent (76,720) (76,726) by T from USA
It's just a little concerning that at the latest press conference she said she's doing many various projects and also working on a new album "in addition" to the other various projects. To me it sounds like the album is an after thought and she doesn't sound as excited as she does for those top secret things. I hope that's not the case. I know albums and music don't make as much money these days but please make the album your number one priority.

Does anyone believe in Karma? (76,696) by T from USA
I've been thinking about some of the amazing performances she had in 2016, like the SSFT and the Essence Fest in the Superdome and then at the end of the year how terrible her live career ended on the open Dick Clark stage in New York City. Then it had me thinking of her actions right before New Years and specifically cancelling the South American tour. She hurt a lot of people and I wonder if that energy came back to hurt her? A more straight forward way to look at it is this: If she would've kept performing regularily through October and November maybe her voice would've been in tip top shape by New Years and she wouldn't have relied so heavily on backing tracks. Take a look at Emotions or WBT at Essence Festival on YouTube to see what I'm talking about. Had she done that same performance at New Years it would've been a whole different story now and maybe even restored her credibility as a live singer to the millions watching.

Could we all be part of another metamorphosis? (76,657) by T from USA
Metamorphosis (noun): a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means.
I've lately been reading a lot of comments on various boards about how Mariah has changed so much and many are loosing favor with her. Her own fans don't recognize her anymore. I myself have considered if I even like the artist in front of me anymore. Then it hit me. Maybe we are right in the middle of what the fan base went through in 1997. At that time fans were freaking out because Mariah had changed seemingly right before their eyes. She lost so many fans at that time. Sure it is twenty years later but in 2017 she could be consciously doing that again to get a new younger generation. She may have even hired Stella and daughters to help her do it. Which means many of us won't last going forward. Some will stick around, some won't. But like a butterfly that keeps reinventing herself, Mariah will survive and this new youth culture might keep her afloat for another twenty.

It sucked. Believe me, if Epic thought it was a hit they wouldn't be shelving it.

Tommy Mottola (76,537) by T from USA
For Tommy Mottola to come out and publically speak about Mariah's managerial situtation is really telling. He risked being scrutinized, seen as obsessed and not minding his own business, and yet he still felt the need to say something. I think everyone in the industry and outside of the industry is rooting for Mariah to wake up.

In the first twenty years of Mariah's career (76,492) by T from USA
An amazing statistic, in the first twenty years of her career she had a song appear on the Hot 100 every year except 2007. My question is how did the song she did with Bone Thugs and Bow Wow not at least debut on the Hot 100? (Even Oh Santa debut at #100 in 2010). In 2007 Bone Thugs single "I Tried" reached #6 on the Hot 100 and the followup single "Lil Love" feat Mariah didn't even crack the chart. Even though she was fresh off the amazing TEOM era where she was red hot and about to release her 18th #1 in Touch My Body. What happened to "Lil Love"? It had a video and got the single treatement. Was it regarded that bad of a song that Mariah (who just had a #1 hit in DFAU, and Bone Thugs who just reached #6 with "I tired) couldnt't even crack the chart together?

Re: Glitter era vs now (76,437) (76,452) by T from USA
Glitter was worse because she still cared and the people still cared so it was tough seeing her not be able to break through. This last few years since 2015 are just pointless.

10 million dollar engagement ring on middle finger (76,451) by T from USA
She's been wearing this for over six months now. Here is the problem with Mariah. What is she even thinking? The old Mariah would never. If this is her idea of keeping her career going or being buzzworthy then she needs to give it up already.

The old Mariah (76,420) by T from USA
If Mariah didn't take American Idol in 2012, if she didn't fall in 2013, if she would've just released an album instead, none of this would be happening right now. This is all a result of some very bad decisions after having kids. She was so level headed and classy at one time and she could've taken that old spirit she had into motherhood. Her whole image could've been based on the next phase of her life and career. She would've been revered as a legend and she could've had the same popularity she used to have but now on a part time basis. It's too late. It's been five years of bad choices and bad press. Plus I'm not sure if she's not heavily medicated due to what happened to her shoulder. Or maybe she's just drinking away the pain.

Re: Who would you pick (76,325) (76,327) by T from USA
Money. Money corrupts people. When she was able to make a lot of it just doing music she did. When her numbers started dwindeling and record sales in general started becoming a thing of the past she had to reinvent herself to keep chasing the coin. It's a shame because if she would've retired after TEOM her legacy would be solid. (Even if she retired right after MCIIY and having children it wouldn't have been as bad as it is now.) The first 15-20 years of Mariah were absolutely perfect.

The two sides of Mariah (76,151) by T from USA
Throughout the years I've always noticed it was almost like there were two Mariah's operating at the same time. One was this repsectful artist who calls (and still calls) people like Lionel Richie "Mr. Richie". Who wouldn't oversing her idols and who was focused and career driven shy artist. The other is a diva who cannot be told what to do. One side of Mariah allowed herself to be controlled and contained in order to achieve almost insurmountable achievements the other side of her personality is single handedly destroying it. For me, the two polarizing adjectives when it comes to MC isn't "black" and "white", but rather artist vs. diva.

Mariah needs to work with real artists again (75,965) by T from USA
She needs to go away. Rent a cottage for a summer like Beyonce did and live with real artists and write songs for two months. Jazmine Sullivan, Solange Knowles, Frank Ocean. She needs to reconnect with her artistry. Can you imagine the songs she would produce if she hung out with real artists? The business will take care of itself if she just comes back with real songs. She should leave the reality tv producers and business people behind while creating an album. Their opinions won't help the process. Unfortunately this won't happen but one could wish.

Just a thought (75,930) by T from USA
If she doesn't sound like her anymore. If she doesn't act like her anymore. If she doesn't work like her anymore. If she doesn't care like her anymore. If she doesn't talk like her anymore. If her face doesn't even look like her anymore. Is she still Mariah Carey anymore?

Re: I'll do it for money, honey (75,918) (75,920) by T from USA
She just lost her way. That's all, she's lost. It's too bad because whether it was just a cultivated image or not, I truly believed she cared about the music.

Re: Mariah lost the plot after Memoirs (75,914) (75,917) by T from USA
And that's what I believe is happening to Mariah at the moment. It's too bad she cannot see it. But I think a lot of times it has to do with a mental state of mind (ego) more then anything. That's why the ones that reach iconic status like MJ, Kanye, etc tend to fall off the deep end. The only mega superstar that I can see has kept her cool (didn't loose the plot) is Madonna. I don't know how she's managed to keep such a thick skin all these years. For a woman who built a career out of changing every two seconds, she sure has stayed the same in a grounded sense.

Re: Mariah lost the plot after Memoirs (75,903) (75,908) by T from USA
The second part: Why 2009 and Obsessed are so significant. It hit me the other day. I used to love Kanye West, espeically during the College Drop Out/Late Registration eras. But in the last few years I haven't liked his public persona. I haven't bought his last three albums and don't care for the songs. Kanye the person rubs me the wrong way. Now I will always have a soft spot for those early songs (as I'm sure the public does with Mariah's early hits), but the more Kanye annoys me, even that taints his older songs in my eyes. Now to Mariah. She was one of the most brilliant pop stars of her generation. She would always craft a song not specifically about her but in a way that could relate to everyone. She didn't alienate with her lyrics. She knew that she had to take herself out of the equation so that the songs would become timeless. But since 2009 and Obsessed she's started to alienate with her persona (and her lyrics, the songs were more pointed towards her drama). Had she stayed the good girl who was just about the music I don't think she would be in any career mess right now. But she rubs people the wrong way and eventually it's going to affect her older material as well. When people hear the name Mariah, unfortunately they are just going to turn the channel. It's funny how you can tear down everything you once held dear just by trying to stay relavant. It's almost ironic.

Re: Mariah lost the plot after Memoirs (75,878) (75,903) by T from USA
I think the truth is money motivates Mariah. It always has. She was a poor kid growing up and music was a means to an ends. Had she been born rich there is no telling if she would've worked as hard or produced that sound and written those songs. Now that she is so rich she doesn't need music the same way she once did. She used to always say that she would feel that the rug would get pulled out from under her if she didn't continue to work hard. But now I think she realizes she is set for life. Mariah's musical career took a dip once the money wasn't there in music anymore, which was right around 2009 (when she went Gold). She tried one more attempt at cashing in with a second Chirstmas album but that didn't sell like the old days either. So she settled on an 18 million dollar reality TV show paycheck. (Something she swore she would never do in the past, but like the Virgin Records deal, money talks.) I will always wonder what would've been if she used Idol properly to promote MIAM. Maybe just maybe we wouldn't be down this road right now.
