Sony exec boasts top shelf products
A Sony Music executive boasted that every superstar in the giant distributor's family will issue product this year as the 35th annual National Assn. of Recording Merchandisers convention wrapped up business yesterday. The Sony presentation was part of an otherwise quiet day, which also featured presentations by the independent record manufacturers and distributors.
NARM announced that next year's convention will be held March 19-22 in San Francisco. Although Sony's presentation was marred by a four-minute electronics glitch - a malady that struck several other product presentations - the distributor offered the most superstar albums for the coming months.
Sony Distribution president Paul Smith made the superstar product boast, although such Sony stars as Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen were not mentioned during the presentation, which concentrated on the next three months. Few dates or album titles were mentioned during the presentation.
A big Columbia Records push is expected for Mariah Carey, who will be out soon with a collection of classic material by Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and Rodgers & Hammerstein. The album will feature 10 numbers and two new duets, teaming Carey with Johnny Mathis and Michael Crawford. No title was given for the album, for which Carey has already recorded six songs.
Columbia also has albums due out from Barbra Streisand, Terrence Trent D'Arby, Kris Kross, Kate Bush and Patti Scialfa. (Variety)
